Chapter XLVII: A Very Special Man
"Fuck, it's even hotter in here!" Angus muttered as I closed the door behind us. His neck was shiny with sweat and my hormones quivered.
"Sorry, our A/C is broken," I said. He sighed with a smile and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.
"Course it is," he said before kissing my hair. Mum came out from the kitchen and saw us.
"Oh, hi," she said giving her best hostess smile. Angus smiled back and offered his hand for her to shake. Finally, someone who was shorter than him. "Is this your friend, Hannah?"
Uh....I looked at Angus who only grinned at me. Sure, let's go with friend for now. "This is Angus. I met him last year."
"Huh. Nice to meet you," she said trying to be polite. I could see her surveying him, probably wondering why he was so short and despising his long hair. She also apparently saw him with a cigarette when she met him at the door and she must have hated that.
"You too, ma'am," he said nodding. "Real great daughter you have here." You couldn't measure the temperature in Kelvin in that room. I smiled shyly and looked down at my bare feet. "Found her when she came to England."
"Oh. So...you two were together on her holiday?" Mum asked sounding awfully suspicious.
"I stayed with Maude," I explained. "But I ran into him once in a while." Angus beamed at Mum who looked back and forth from me to him.
"Oh. Did you want anything to eat? Have you had breakfast?" We followed her to the kitchen where a giant fan was oscillating. Angus looked at the bacon on the counter. "We have bacon...I can cook an egg if you want."
"Uh...nah, I'm alright," he sniffed. "Had a bite at a bakery this mornin'." Ivy and Magnolia raced across the floor, sliding on the hardwood. "Woah," Angus said stepping aside. "Didn't know you had kids."
"They're new," I said. Ivy paused her scamper to sniff Angus' hand when he stretched it out to her. Magnolia's eyes were wide and her tail was swishing. Angus yanked his hand back as Magnolia attacked, her and Ivy rolling across the floor. "They like to wrestle."
"No kiddin'...." Angus said bewitched. "Look at 'em, it's Mal an' George..."
"You want anything to drink?" Mum asked washing her hands. Angus straightened out and shrugged. "We have Cokes, or....coffee?"
"Coke sounds good. Or...have you got milk?" he asked. "Jus' wonderin'." Mum opened our fridge and pulled out a bottle of milk and grabbed a glass from the cupboard. She poured him a glass and he took it, having a quick sip. "Thank you," he said. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "Have I...come at a bad time?"
"No, this is actually a good time, the baby we usually watch today is out sick."
Angus took another drink. "Uh, I was wonderin'...if I could maybe have a word with your daughter? With Hannah?" he asked. Mum eyed me suspiciously with a smile.
"Sure. I'll be here if you need me." I led Angus back outside to the backyard.
"Thanks for the milk!" he called.

We sat on the steps of the deck sweating under the sun. It was the only place where we'd have privacy without going into one of the bedrooms.
Mum didn't need to see that.
Angus drank the rest of his milk and hiccuped. "You guys have good milk," he said setting the glass down beside him. "It's a little thin up in England."
"You can have as much as you want," I said fanning my face.
"Don't you want any?" he asked. "What if I drink it all an' you have no more for tea?"
"Then I'll buy more," I said. "You're my guest, it's okay."
"I'm your trespasser," he corrected. "Barged in an' whatnot, ya' know?" We sat there for a while, enjoying the sounds of silence. And the birds singing from the maple tree. "Listen...I can't stay for long." I nodded, figuring as much. "We're still playin' shows around Australia for the tour. We have hotels nearby. I jus'....wanted to see ya'."
"I'm glad you did," I said holding his hand. He smiled, reaching into his pocket, then pulling his hand out again. "You can smoke."
"Nah, don't wanna." I raised my eyebrows. "I don't wanna smoke at your house, is what I meant."
"We're outside, it's okay." He squeezed my hand and kissed my knuckles.
"Thanks, love." He left it at that and didn't smoke. I leaned against him resting my head on his shoulder. "The boys miss ya'," he said. "An' your friend. Where's she from, New Zealand?" I nodded. "We'll have to drop by sometime an' pay her a visit, Bon's gettin' toey, ya' know." I snickered. "She still seein' that guy?"
"Brett? Yeah, she's still seeing him."
"Hm. Bon was askin'."
"Doesn't Bon already have a woman in every country?" I joked. Angus chuckled.
"Well...not every country. Ya' know I don't think he has New Zealand, ya' know? Tryin' to get that...that BINGO card."
"I miss them too," I said. "They're going okay?"
"Sure, they're alright. Linda might be...." He looked at me, unsure. "Uh...not sure if Mal wants me to say anythin' jus' yet....anyway, Mal an' Linda are great, an' Cliff's thinkin' of marryin' Georgeanne soon....Bon....he's been visitin' old friends of his around Australia during the tour. I know he wants a break....Phil....he's been busy," Angus sighed. "He's doin' better. He still shows up on time an' he's been smilin' a lot more. Wish I could help but what can I do?"
"When does the tour end?"
"Uh...." Angus searched the sky for an answer. "Right before Christmas. Sometime right before Christmas. Then we get a break until next year. Cheers." He tapped his empty glass against my arm and drank air. I laughed. "An' I....wanted to ask you somethin'."
My heart pounded. A cool breeze whistled by and tickled the back of my neck. "What?"
"Well...you remember I had somewhere I wanted to take you?" he asked.
"Yeah...."
"I was wonderin'....if you wanted to meet my family."
**********
The sun was just beginning to set. The air was sticky and our passionate kissing didn't help. We were standing at the side of the house by my bedroom window where no one else could see us. No one related to me, anyhow. My fingers gently tugged on his hair and he tried feeling for the hem of my shirt but it was too long to slip his hands under. "Your shirt's a dress," he mumbled.
"Does this help?" I asked slightly lifting my leg high enough where he could grab it. The fabric of my shirt slid down revealing more skin. Angus sighed.
"Yeah, yeah that helps," he said before accepting the offer and kissing me again. His t-shirt was damp with sweat and his hair a tangled mess in my fingers. He gently stroked the skin on my leg and my blood raced. A cool breeze did nothing to alleviate the heat between us and the flies were ghastly. Finally we separated completely out of breath, Angus resting his forehead against mine. "You an' I....have a lot of catchin' up to do..." he panted. "An' a lot of time to make up for."
Despite the temptation to kiss him again, I knew I'd have to be wrenched away with a pry bar to stop. So I settled for a hug.
That was almost worse.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too," he said letting go of my leg and embracing me. The nighttime wildlife were about to start their concert and I was sure Angus had one to attend as well.
"You have a show tonight?" I asked.
"Nah. Tomorrow, though....two hours." He sighed and laughed a little. "You don't regret fallin' for a musician?"
"I don't regret you." We could smell the Velveeta. But we didn't care.
"I'll see ya' tomorrow, alright?" he said. "Our show ends at....whenever it ends an' I'll come find you. That okay?"
"Perfect," I smiled. My heart began a naughty dance routine in my chest. What I wouldn't give to spend the night with him. Alone in the house....
Angus stepped back and kissed my nose. "Love ya', cutie." And with that he walked toward the front of the house and down the street to his hotel. I watched him until I couldn't see him anymore. With a swarm of nasty flies coming my way I took off into the house waving my hands left and right. Safe inside, I stepped over the sleeping kittens and found Mum and Dad eating dinner at the table.
"Who was that stick figure leaving our property?" Dad asked. "He's like two feet tall."
I needed a cup of tea.
