Epilogue
THE REUNION
Hey y'all. It's been a while since we last checked in with the crew. Almost seventeen years later and here we are!
"I'm telling you that's how my momma and her friends survived!" Genny laughed with her group of friends as they sat in the decorated basement.
It was Halloween and the teens didn't feel like trick or treating.
"That's insane!" Alex smiled dumping the bag of candy into the center of the floor.
"No it's real." Genny's cousin, Mariana, said pulling up the news article. She was sitting next to her girlfriend, Nova.
"So all of her friends died?" Eva asked holding hands with her boyfriend Mateo.
Genny nodded, "Yeah."
The lights to the basement shut off covering them in darkness. The friends screamed holding onto each other.
The steps creaked, "Who the fuck is that?"
"Aye, language!" Her uncles voice came from the steps.
Genny smiled as the lights flickered on revealing her dad and her Uncle Joey. "Why would you do that?"
Joey laughed pushing Oakley, "That was your dads idea."
Oakley shrugged eyeing how close Alex was to his daughter before speaking, "It's Halloween and you're cooped up inside."
Joey ruffled Mariana's hair, "Papi, chill. I'm gonna tell Aunt Lo you're messing with me!"
"Mija relax. I swear ever since you got a girlfriend you act like I'm not your favorite." Joey looked offended.
Genny snickered bumping her dad with her arms, "Can we go to this Halloween party tonight?"
Oakley shook his head staring at the girl who looked just like his wife, "Ask your mom."
"Fine. Come on!" Genny pulled Alex by the hand and drug the rest of her friends upstairs where the adult party ensued.
Joey chuckled seeing Oakley's nostrils flare, "Let her have a boyfriend, Oak. She's a good girl."
Oakley looked at Joey who turned out to be his best man at the wedding all those years ago, "Really?"
Genny pushed past her family members finding her mother passing out candy on the porch, "Ma, can we go to this Halloween party tonight?"
Lauren smiled feeling the wrinkles on her face. She was getting older with time but stayed beautiful, "Sure. Just be careful."
"Yeah, don't go hitting people." Joey slung his arm over Lauren's shoulder.
Mariana smiled just as bright as her father, "Papi, we're gonna ride bikes instead."
"Genevieve Caesar-Su, don't go around tell that story. Please and thank you." Lauren found herself locking eyes with her husband.
Genny smiled ignoring how her parents flirted with each other constantly, "Okay. I'll send you my location!"
The adults watched as the group of teens flooded out of the house and into the dark night. Their bikes paddling down the streets of Maine.
"Joey get off me. Go find your wife or something! You probably told her that story didn't you?" Lauren rolled her eyes pushing her bestie.
"I still love you, Lo."
Lauren sucked her teeth hugging Oakley's torso, "I worry about her honestly."
Oakley kissed the top of her head, "I do too. But nothing will ever be as bad as that summer."
Lauren snickered, "Which one are you talking about 2013 or 2023?"
Both of them honestly! I just hope that me and my friends never end up in a situation like that. But we're nothing like them. We're all honest with each other and I'm glad I found my people, especially my cousin.
I would say until next time but there won't be a next time!
