Chapter Six

Once they had all settled down, which took a while because Sophie struggled to sit down in her dress and heels, Biana said, "Okay, Sophie, so it's your turn to ask someone a question. Who do you choose?"

Sophie scanned the faces, and settled on asking Linh. "So, Linh, truth or dare?" Linh thought for a moment, placing a finger on her lips as she scrunched her eyebrows thoughtfully. After a few seconds, she said, "Uhh... truth."

"Okay," Sophie said, trying to think of a good one. She drew a blank. "Umm, Biana, do you have any good ones?" Sophie knew Biana had been dying to ask a question. She was practically exploding from not being able to ask.

"Ooh, ooh, I know! Linh, who is your crush?" Biana asked excitedly.

Linh blushed, then looked around at everyone else. Fitz stared back, almost pleading with his eyes. Linh didn't notice. She blushed again, then answered, "Uh... Wylie."

Biana gasped, Fitz looked away, seemingly disappointed, and Sophie just stared at Keefe, hoping that no one would ask either of them to tell their crush. The embarrassment might overwhelm her.

"Linh, it's your turn," Sophie told Linh.

"Oh, okay," Lihn said. "Umm, Dex, truth or dare?" She asked.

"Uh, dare, obviously!" Dex answered. Linh couldn't seem to come up with a good dare. Tam leaned over and whispered something in her ear. Linh nodded, frowned a bit, but still whispered it in Dex's ear.

He grinned mischievously and got up.

Dex strode over to Biana's bathroom and grabbed a bottle of something off of the vanity. He then ran back to the group and sprayed it all into Keefe's hair.

"Nooooooo! The Hair! Why must you torture the Hair! How dare you? Ahhhhh! No!" Keefe complained. The stuff Dex had sprayed in Keefe's hair made it stick straight up and turn blue. Why Biana had that stuff, Sophie had no idea.

Keefe raced into the bathroom and hastily stuck his head under the faucet of the sink, letting the water run through his hair, but to no avail. His hair was still blue.

Keefe groaned and gave up. But then he had an idea. He grabbed the bottle that Dex was still holding out of his hand, and read the directions.

"Yeti pee?!?!" Keefe yelled. "I have to put yeti pee in my hair to get this stuff out?!?!" He groaned again. Sophie continued to wonder why the heck Biana had that bottled blue hair stuff.

Once Keefe had calmed down, which took quite a while, they decided to keep playing. It was Dex's turn.

"Hmmm, uh, Fitz, truth or dare?" Dex asked Fitz. "Um, truth," Fitz answered. Dex said, "Soooo, um, why did you and Sophie break up?"

Oh no, Sophie thought. Her eyes widened. She silently pleaded Fitz not to answer. She didn't want to hear it. She didn't  want to know why Fitz broke up with her. She always just assumed that it was because she was unmatchable.

"Umm, well, I think we broke up, uh, because..." Fitz stuttered. Sophie looked down. He doesn't even know why we broke up? she thought to herself.

"You don't even know?" Sophie asked Fitz. "Or are you too afraid to spit it out?" Bitterness overcame her. "Are you afraid to hurt my feelings, huh? Because it's too late for that." She rose to her feet. "I know why we broke up. It's because you're too selfish to want to date an Unmatchable like me!" She stomped out of the room, so angry that when she stumbled in her heels that Biana gave her, she pulled them off and threw them against the wall. Fitz called after her, saying "Sophie, no, that's not why, come back!" Then he quieted, realizing it was useless.

The others just stared at each other, quite startled by Sophie's unexpected outburst. Then Keefe hastily got up and ran after Sophie.

Sophie trudged into another room, ignoring Ro's laughter, then turned around. "Keefe, what are you doing? Are you going to yell at me or something?" She said, still seething about what happened with Fitz. "Nope, I'm here to do this," Keefe said, then picked up his hand, offering Sophie a high five. When she didn't move, he picked up her arm and made her high five him.

"Nice job getting back at the Fitzter!"He said, but then he took on a more serious tone. "Are you okay, though, Sophie?" He asked, his voice filled with concern. Sophie knew he was serious when he called her by her first name.

"I don't know, you tell me, you're the Empath," Sophie answered, looking at him with a daring expression.

"Sophie, I know I can feel your feelings, but that doesn't mean I'm any good at interpreting them," Keefe said. He grabbed her hand and led her to a nearby couch. He plopped down next to her. "So, how are you? Honestly, tell me. You can tell me anything," he said, sending a soft, cool breeze through her mind.

"I don't know," Sophie said. She didn't really want to talk about her feelings, but Keefe seemed so warm and understanding that she just couldn't help it. "...I guess I feel kinda angry at Fitz. He put a lot of pressure on me to find my biological parents. And I feel like the reason he broke up with me is because I couldn't find them. Like I wasn't perfect enough to date him. Because I'm unmatchable. Because if he dated me, we'd be a bad match. I don't think anyone would one to date me now. I know that you guys say no one cares, but what's the point of the entire matchmaking system if no one did? Why does everyone keep getting match lists if it doesn't matter? I... I just don't get it. If no one cares, then why does everyone keep avoiding me as if I have a disease or something? Like being Unmatchable is contagious? I don't even know why any of you are still friends with me. You're outcasts now, because of me, the girl who can't be matched. The girl who was kidnapped. The freak."

Keefe squeezed her hand, sending another calming breeze. "Sophie, you're not a freak. We don't care if you're Unmatchable. We don't care if we're outcasts because of it. Because you're a great person, Sophie. You're kind and understanding. You're so intelligent. You are such a great friend, and you seem to always know how to help someone before they even ask for your help. We love you, Sophie. I... I love you." He nervously fidgeted, then gained a little confidence. "That's what I've been trying to say all day. I love you."

Sophie started at him. It was rare to see him so anxious. "You do?" She asked, not quite believing him. This had to be a prank...right?

"Yeah." He cleared his throat. "Yes, I do. So much... I have ever since I met you," he added nervously.

"I... I don't even know how to.. to respond," Sophie said. She thought back to all the times Keefe helped her, and how many times she had helped him. She realized that all those window sleepovers at Alluveture, all those times she got butterflies in her stomach when he looked at her, all those times he sent her those gentle breezes, that they were because of love. He loved her. And she... she loved him back. Fitz was not right for her. That was why they broke up. Because she didn't love him. She loved Keefe. All that time, and she didn't even realize it. She was meant to be with... him. With Keefe.

Keefe slowly backed away from her, thinking that her silence meant that she didn't like him back. Disappointment and heartbreak etched across his handsome features. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"I think love you too, Keefe," she cut him off, flushing bright red. "I do. I know now. I love you."

Keefe seemed surprised. Nearly simultaneously, they leaned in towards each other. Closer, closer, closer, until they were merely an inch from each other. Sophie studied his face, noticing a faint splatter of freckles across his nose and how he had bright, almost green flecks in his ice blue eyes. They leaned in more, until their lips were almost touching, when...

"Sophie, I'm sorr-" Fitz yelled as he came into the room. Sophie and Keefe scrambled away from each other as fast as possible, but it was still too late. "What?" Fitz asked. "You yell at me, just to come in here to kiss my best friend?" Sophie quickly responded, "Fitz, I didn't- it's just a misunders-"

"You have no excuse! You get mad at me for breaking up with you-or something-but then come in here with Keefe just to make out? I can't believe you, Sophie!" He screamed, running his hands angrily through his hair. Biana, hearing his outburst, rushed into the room, and restrained him to keep him from hurting anybody else.

With a wink, while dragging Fitz out of the room, she said, "Sorry, guys. You can go back to... whatever you were doing." She winked again.

Ro peeked in a gave Keefe a thumbs up. "FINALLY!" She screamed, "Guess you won the bet! Finally, Hunkyhair!" She pumped her fist in excitement.

Sophie blushed furiously. She looked at Keefe, and he was blushing too.

"Aww, you guys are so adorable!" Ro exclaimed.

Keefe glared at her.

Sophie couldn't help but ask, "You and Ro had a bet on this?"

"Uh... maybe."
