6 - Marinette
Marinette woke up late that morning. After her initial panic, she celebrated. It was as though pieces of her life were falling back where they were supposed to be. She rushed to school, a ridiculous grin on her face. When she ran up the stairs to class, she could see that students were filing in. "Alya!" Marinette called, seeing Alya.
"Marinette, girl!" Alya said, noticing Marinette.
"What's up?" Marinette asked, coming to a stop next to Alya.
"I forgot to text you the movie details." Alya said randomly.
"Yes, you did." Marinette said as they sat down.
"Pay attention!" The science teacher yelled - Marinette could never recall her name.
She always had such a negative attitude. You'd think with wild purple hair she'd be fun. "Jeez, what's her problem?" Alya asked, leaning over to whisper to Marinette.
"I know, right?" Marinette answered.
---------
"You go ahead, I'll catch up." Marinette said to Alya as the class dispersed for lunch.
"Okay, girl." Alya said, walking off with Nino.
After the class had emptied, Marinette sighed. She enjoyed being happy again, but she needed a break to let her emotions just flow. Marinette collapsed into the bench Adrien had been sitting in during class and put her head on the table. She lifted her head, standing up, when she saw Adrien's head poking in through the door. "Hi." Marinette lifted a hand in greeting.
It once more struck her as sad she didn't like him anymore. Chat had more than filled in Adrien's place. Adrien's mouth moved into a straight line and his head craned back. Simply put, he was derping. Then his face shifted into a nervous smile. "H-hi, Marinette!" Adrien waved, the other hand pulling at his shirt collar.
"Hello" Marinette smiled, amused, as Adrien stepped fully into the room.
"I wasn't spying on you, because that would be weird, but I was looking for you, and I found you so hooray!" Adrien rambled out in one breath.
Marinette giggled. Oh how Adrien had missed that laugh, especially when it had been reserved for just him. "I swear I'm not a creepy stalker." Adrien clarified, laughing along with Marinette.
"What a relief." Marinette smiled.
Her precious smile. Now that it was back, Adrien never wanted to see it leave again. Marinette scooted over, patting the space next to her. Adrien sat down only to find their shoulders brushing. He blushed slightly. It felt like he was falling in love with Marinette all over again. "How come you're in here?" Adrien asked.
"Sometimes you just need time to think." Marinette said thoughtfully.
"I get it. What were you thinking about?"
"Where's my penny?" Marinette laughed, referring to the night they had spent in the hospital.
"No change. I think I need other means of payment."
"What did you have in mind?" Marinette smiled slyly.
"Uh-Uh-Uh! Where's my penny?" Adrien laughed.
"Thoughts for thoughts again, then." Marinette laughed at Adrien's childish response.
"Indeed. Enlighten me, Marinette." Adrien leaned on his elbow.
"Well... I was thinking... What are you supposed to do after the love of your life-" Marinette paused, choking on the word.
"-Dies...?" She stared at the table while speaking.
Adrien was silent. Marinette looked at him, eyes sad, yet lit with curiosity. "I-" Adrien paused.
He hadn't realized that Marinette actually loved his boisterous alter-ego. "I've never.... How do answer that?" He asked.
Marinette began to giggle. Then laugh. "Marinette?" Adrien asked, blushing in embarrassment, slightly frightened, hoping that it wouldn't be a repeat of those weeks ago when she found those images online.
"You don't have to answer, it's just what I was thinking about." Marinette giggled.
When she caught sight of his bewildered face, she stopped laughing. "Don't worry about it, Adrien." Marinette put an arm around Adrien's shoulder and he relaxed, feeling the warmth he'd missed so much since they parted on Halloween.
"I didn't realize you were going through so much." Adrien confessed.
"Hey, it's nothing. Well, it's something, but I'm fine. Totally okay." Marinette leaned forward, looking into Adrien's eyes again.
She beamed, a smile brighter than all of the stars. "Alright." Adrien smiled back as Marinette pulled her arm back.
He missed it immediately. "What about you?" Marinette poked Adrien in his unsuspecting side.
"Oh-" He said, doubling over at the touch.
"Oi, my poor pressure points." Adrien whined.
"Aw, muffin." Marinette cooed, giggling.
"As I was saying," Adrien poked Marinette back (who reacted with only a squeak, to his dismay), "Wondering where you were and then wondering your thoughts."
"Deep." Marinette nodded.
"I am deeper than the ocean." Adrien agreed in a deep voice.
Marinette and Adrien broke down into laughter. Once their laughter had died down, Marinette suggested eating lunch, so they ate together in silence, occasional pokes to the other's sides. Marinette was nearly finished when she announced, "I'm bored."
"I as well. Any ideas?" Adrien asked.
"Hmm." Marinette thought, cleaning up her containers.
"Oh, oh! I read a book and these two people had like five minutes of honesty and I've wanted to do it with someone for a long time but the only people were Alya, who is honest anyways, and Ch- my friend but he'd probably be too... honest." Marinette laughed at the last part.
"What book was it?" Adrien asked.
"I don't want to say." Marinette said, blushing in embarrassment.
"Okay, let's do it." Marinette set her phone to a five minute timer.
"Ready?" Adrien nodded.
Half a second into the start, Adrien spoke. "What book?"
"Oh my God, I see what you did there. Will Grayson, Will Grayson." Marinette said sheepishly.
"That was ten minutes." Adrien said.
"Oh, shh. You're wasting time." Marinette said, waving Adrien off.
"Alright. Your turn."
"I don't know what to ask."
"I'll go then. Do you have a crush on me?" Shit. Marinette cursed.
"No." She answered confidently.
What? Adrien wondered. Had she lied to Chat? "I did have a crush on you. Who told you that?" Marinette asked.
"Had a hunch." Honesty, Adrien. Honesty. He scolded himself.
"Is your hunch Alya or Nino?" Marinette laughed.
"How did you know?" Adrien faked a gasp.
"I don't know what to ask." Marinette repeated once they had calmed again.
"Ask me the first thing that comes to your mind."
"Okay. Why were you actually looking for me?" Marinette said, looking Adrien in the eyes.
"Well, to modify that, I was looking for you to find you, and then I was wanting to ask if you're okay. Which you confirmed."
"I don't have very interesting questions." Marinette sighed.
"It's alright." Adrien glanced at the timer.
He had ten seconds. "Adrien, what is it that you want to say?" Marinette asked, searching his eyes.
"I...." Now or never. "Do you... Do you want to go out for dinner or something some time?" Adrien asked, side of head on table, looking up at Marinette.
The timer went off. Absently, Marinette turned it off. Is he asking me out? She stared blankly at Adrien. "Adrien..." Marinette's heart was thumping in fear.
"I..."
"Marin-" Adrien began.
Marinette shushed him. "Adrien.... The person, the love of my life, well, he's the love of my life. I... I don't want to say no, but Adrien, I feel such a goddamn pull towards him. Maybe I would've said yes a month ago, but this guy, he took my heart and he won't give it back." Marinette said, eyes watering.
Adrien looked at Marinette before grabbing her in a hug. "Why is it so goddamned?" Adrien asked, pulling back.
Marinette was surprised to say the least, and had been awkwardly frozen in the hug. "Because he's never coming back." Marinette sighed.
"And if he did?" Adrien asked.
"I'd spend every minute of my life telling him I love him."
