Address
"Who's that guy?"
"Lilly, just get into the car."
"But I don't wanna sit with him! He's freaky!"
"Lilly", I say sternly, "Just shut up and get inside the damn car!"
"NO!", she pulls away from my grasp and slams the car door shut. Mia gets out the front seat and opens her mouth to scold Lilly.
"It's ok Mia, I got this."
"No you don't", she says simply and frowns at Lilly. "LILLY GET IN THE CAR!"
"NO! I won't sit with that guy. He's wearing makeup! Is he crazy? Eww. He's a boy!"
"Lilly, that's wrong", I squat down so we're level and pull her to me. She looks down at me and pushes out her lower lip making a sad face. "He's my friend Lilly. And he loves makeup too. Just like you and I do."
"But he's a boy", she whispers, "isn't he?"
I chuckle. "Boys wear makeup too Lilly. It's ok."
"Yeah. Better than most us girls do anyway", Mia sighs and shakes her head. It reminds me of the time she tried doing her makeup herself and ended up looking even worse than a sweaty clown with his makeup everywhere else except for where it's supposed to be.
Lilly narrows her eyes, thinking deeply about what I just said. "Ok", she says, "but he has to play hat tails with me or else I'll jump off the moving car."
My eyes go wide in shock. "Of course he will."
I get up, open the back door again and make Lilly sit with Kenny, who's face lightens up the second she crawls in. When she gets in, I move to shut the door, and in the process, also turn on the child safety lock at the side of it, just incase Kenny isn't a huge fan of hat and tails.
I walk forward and get inside the driver's seat. "Good job, older sister", Mia says as we fasten our seatbelts. "Thanks." I wink at her.
I drive for 20 minutes then take a final turn leading to Kenny's house. I stop infront of it and get out of the car. The second I open Kenny's door, he comes tumbling out and shuts the door behind him in a hurry. "Remind me to never ride with your little sister ever again! I'd rather ride the school bus then endure THAT level of torture. Ugh!"
I laugh and look down at his shirt that's covered in chocolate. "You gave her chocolate?", I ask him.
"Oh oh!", he scoffs, "she gave me chocolate! Agh! That girl be cra-zy."
I laugh at the way he's looking at his t-shirt with extreme distaste. "I'mma go now. Bye!"
"Wait Kenny!"
He turns back around and raises his eyebrows. "Yeah?"
"You talked to Harry, your crush, I mean?"
His face immediately goes red as blood rushes to his cheeks. I can see the discomfort and excitement written all over his face. He tilts his head to the side in an attempt to hide his pinky face. "Dunno... If..."
Mia honks the horn of my car suddenly, disturbing our conversation.
"Tea talk wid ma bae Kylie tonight kay?", he says and I nod my head before he runs off to his house and attacks the doorbell a thousand times.
"We going or not?", Mia yells, lifting her head out of her window.
"Coming", I yell back, "give me a sec."
I pull out my phone from my pocket and my hands promptly go wet. I feel nervousness climb up my body as I search Travis's name on the contact list. I tap on his name, then call him.
He cancels on me. I stare at my phone looking dumfound. That son of a-
Going to my contact list again, I hold down on his name and when the extra options pop up, I slam my finger on 'block'.
Huh! I can't believe he had the balls to do that! This was the first time in years that I'd called him. I sigh. I'm clearly acting like a jerk.
I get back inside my car.
Tapping my fingers impatiently against the steering wheel, I wish for the traffic to quickly clear up. Taking a drive during the the rush hour, is definitely a pain.
I whip my phone out for the hundredth time since the past 15 minutes. I look at the address, reciting it in my head. Over and over. It isn't the suburbs for sure. Why would mom want us here? Why would she want me to miss school to just "talk with her"? Why'd she come back all of a sudden? Why's she so happy? What's up with her? Thousands of such questions and thoughts whirl in my mind as I stare at my phone. I can't be stupid. I know something's up.
An annoying horn from the Honda behind knocks me back into reality and I grab the steering wheel again.
"I'm hungry!", Mia complains as I take the next exit. "Almost there...", I say.
I'm left speechless as I see the turns my car is making. The way it's headed, I've been there before. Not years back, but just yesterday. A left, a right and another right. My heart beats faster by the second as I start to realize where we're going. A tiny house. Smaller than Jasmine's. Only one tree in the front yard. I slow the car down and look at the address again.
This is it. We're here. I wipe my sweaty hands on the side of my dress and take a few breaths to calm myself down. "You okay?", Mia asks, looking at me with concern.
"Uh.. yeah."
"You don't look okay."
I look at the house again. Fuck my life sideways.
"Woah!", Mia says getting out of the car, "this house is trashed as fuck!"
Lilly squishes her nose against the car window and breathes on it. "Why is it covered in... eggs?"
I get out and hold onto my car's door for dear life. I ain't blind yet. This is Logan's house. And if I wasn't blind last night either, then mom sure as hell was here; standing in the doorway yelling incoherent things while her translucent night gown flew to the left with the force of the wind.
