The Church (cont'd)
Not long afterwards, Becca appeared, I was tempted to hug that banging body of hers but I had to control myself, Catherine could easily appear out of nowhere. "What are you doing here?" I asked her.
"I should be asking you that. Why are you here, Dan? Last I remember, you barely attend church. Why have you been ignoring my calls and texts? What did I do wrong? You don't even come to the bar anymore." She replied, standing in front of me with her hands on her waist.
"What you did wrong? Seriously, Becca? You don't know what you did wrong?"
"I already said I'm sorry."
"I have forgiven you, Becca. I just moved on from you."
"I'm sorry, okay?" She moved closer but I moved further and gave her a look that told her not to come any closer. "By the way, why are you here?" She asked.
"I'm here with my woman. We came to see her niece." I replied.
"The one sitting beside you?"
"Yes."
"Wait, Catherine is your woman?" She sounded surprised.
"You know Catherine?" I sounded more surprised.
"Who, in this church, doesn't know Catherine?"
I began to have different thoughts in my head "Have they, by any chance, met each other? Is this Catherine's church? But Catherine barely attends church on Sundays. Why would she..."
"You didn't know she attends this church? You look so surprised" Becca said, interrupting my thoughts.
"I do, I'm just surprised you know her. Does she also know you?" I asked.
"I don't think she does. We only say hi when we come across each other. She's like the popular one, she's been attending this church since she was a teenager, she comes here with her mother, but since the demise of her mother, she's barely attended. She doesn't keep much friends around here, so we barely know each other." Becca said. She noticed how I looked relieved hearing her statement. "Were you worried we were close enough for her to know what happened?" She asked.
"I am not." I responded, not looking at her.
"Sure you're not afraid I'll tell her what happened?"
"Nothing happened!"
"Yeah, we didn't have sex but you definitely touched me."
"Becca!" I called her name loudly and quickly looked around to see if no one was looking at us. "I am not having this conversation with you. Nothing happened, end of story!"
"We'll see how she reacts when she hears." She grinned.
"Don't you dare go near her." I moved closer to her and pointed my index finger towards her face.
"Don't you dare ignore me too, Dan." She responded.
"Look, Catherine already knows about you. She has seen your text on my phone. You've caused a serious damage to our relationship and I don't want that again. So, please, Becca, don't go near Catherine and even if you do, don't say anything out of the ordinary to her. I promise to come around when I'm free. Please, I love Catherine with all my life, don't do anything stupid."
"Okay. I promise I won't. You just can't abandon me like that, Dan."
"I'm sorry if you feel abandoned. I have to go back inside, I don't want her coming out in search of me. We'll talk later."
"Yeah." She hugged me. I quickly freed myself and looked around to see who saw us, seeing no one, I walked out of her presence.
I got inside, sat beside Catherine, pulled her head closer to me and kissed her on the forehead. She looked at me confusingly but I only smiled and said nothing. Not long afterwards, Becca passed by, walking towards her seat, I acted like I didn't see her.
Truly, Catherine was a popular figure at church. After the service ended, she said hi to God knows the amount of people, old and young approached her and exchanged hugs and kisses. Some asked why she had became a scarce figure at the church and she made up stories to answer them. Her niece came and hugged her. "Thanks for coming, I am so happy." Cecilia said.
"I told you I was going to come." Catherine responded.
"Even you came, Daniel." Cecilia turned towards me and said.
"He wasn't going to miss it." Catherine replied, looking at me as she walked away. I only smiled.
"You sang like the angels, Cecilia." I was trying to compliment her.
"Did I?" She laughed. "Perhaps you should come listen to this angel every Sunday." She laughed again. I laughed too. My laugh seized immediately I saw Catherine and Becca hugging each other, my heart beat faster. I stood afar watching them talk, I wished I could hear what they were saying but I didn't want to go any closer. They ended their conversation and hugged each other again, Becca winked at me this time, I shot her a stern look. After Becca left, Catherine turned and walked towards me, not smiling, this made my heart beat faster and I was already thinking of lies to say in case Becca told her anything, but instead Catherine said, "I won't be following you home, Dan. I have to go to meet my boss. I just remembered we had fixed a meeting today, so I have to meet up with him."
"Even on a Sunday? Can't this man just give you a break for God's sakes." I said. I was relieved by what she said, it seemed Becca kept her promise of not saying anything, but I had to be sure, so I asked, "Do you know that lady you just spoke with?"
"Oh, yeah. I can't really remember her name, she's a regular here. She's well known as red-haired," Catherine laughed gently. "We only say hi to each other when we see."
"Oh, I see" I was relieved hearing that too. "You should get going to avoid issues with your boss."
"Yeah, I should. We'll talk later, when I'm done." She walked out and called for a taxi.
On my walk home, just after walking few meters away from the church, I met Becca, like she was lurking around, waiting for me. "You're definitely walking me home." She said.
"You are crazy. She could have easily seen us."
"Nah, I just saw her get into a taxi." She grinned.
I shook my head in disbelief.
"What? I just miss you, and I wanted to have a little chat with you." She laughed softly.
We walked till we were out of sight of the church.
