"I smell a rat."
I became friends with Becca again, not like we turned enemies before but the friendship collapsed. Now we're back together, as friends. I visited the bar often, well I had to, because Becca had threatened she was going to tell Catherine everything. I wondered why that sounded like a threat, "I didn't do anything with Becca, so what's there if she tells Cathy? Not like I cheated on Cathy with her. Hmm, maybe the text message she sent and Catherine's reaction to it when she read it makes it look like Becca is indeed a threat to my relationship."
Becca called me one evening and told me we needed to talk, it reminded me of the last time she mentioned that, I guessed whatever she wanted to say would absolutely be a made-up story. "What is it you wanna talk about?" I asked.
"How about we see each other first?" She responded.
"You know that's not going to happen. I am not letting you distract me again."
"This is different, I think it's something you'd like." She sounded serious.
"Then say it over the phone."
"You sure, Danny boy?" She asked.
"Don't call me that, just say what you have to say."
"It isn't about me. It's about your woman."
I sat upright immediately I heard that. "Catherine?"
"Do you have another woman? It's obviously her."
"What happened to Cathy?" I asked curiously.
"Nothing serious, I just found it strange and surprising seeing her at the bar here."
"Cathy? At your bar?" I was confused.
"What's more surprising is that she wasn't alone. There was a man with her."
"A man? When was that?"
"This happened few days ago."
"Why are you just telling me this, Becca? Why are you even telling me? What are you driving at? Is this what we needed to see each other to discuss?" I queried her.
"I am not driving at anything, I just thought you needed to know. She's someone we both know, there's nothing wrong in telling you about your woman coming to my bar with another man."
"Could you describe the man?"
"A bald man, probably in his late thirties or early forties. He has broad shoulders and a full beard."
"That's her boss." I quickly pictured her description to be her boss.
"Oh, her boss."
"Yeah. There's nothing wrong with having a drink with your boss, Becca."
"I bet you didn't know your woman loves tequila."
"I do." I lied. I didn't even know Catherine takes drinks other than soda and wine.
"You needed to see the way they were both smiling. Gosh! They looked so happy and roman..."
"Becca!!!" I yelled her name. "Thanks for the information I didn't need. I have things to do I'll speak to you later."
"Hey, don't you dare hang up on..."
I hung up and heaved a sigh, "What a woman!" I said. Few minutes later, I found myself drifting into thoughts of the conversation about Catherine and her boss, "For Catherine to be at a bar, she definitely drinks. What's with her and her boss? Could something be going on? Definitely not, Cathy would never cheat on me. Not even with the man she nags about all the time. I have to be sure, I have to clear my doubts. But how do I go about it? Asking her? That will be the most stupid thing I would do. Stalk her? But that would make it look like I don't trust my woman anymore. Why should I even take Becca's words serious, after all she's full of lies, though we can't dispute the fact Cathy's always having something to do with her boss. I have to satisfy my curiosity. I need to prove Becca and myself wrong that Catherine can never be cheating. Her phone would be the best way to know." I decided on embarking on an unnecessary journey all due to Becca's words, perhaps not just Becca's words, the thought of Catherine's relationship with her boss had always been on my mind, a part of me was jealous, so I was moved to prove to myself Catherine wouldn't cheat.
For the next few days, whenever I had a conversation with Catherine, I would mention her boss and see how she reacts to it, to my surprise, her reactions stays the same but she's quick to divert the talk and move to something else. I discovered that wasn't going to help my mission, going through the phone would do. Getting a hold of Catherine's phone was a very difficult task, she's always busy with her phone and she doesn't surrender it so easily to anyone, so I needed to cook up the perfect reason to have her phone in my hands.
On a Thursday night, while Catherine was at my place, I thought and thought of how to get a hold of her phone but when I couldn't think of a good reason, I gave up. I stood up from the bed and walked into the room where Catherine sat and luckily for me, her phone laid there, on the sofa, I was surprised, Catherine wasn't in the room, I could hear sounds in the kitchen. "This is the right time." I thought. I tiptoed to where her phone is, picked it up, found it unlocked, went straight to her messages and found an unread message from her boss that read: "Friday night. The bar. Don't be late. Kisses." I read the message over and over again and still couldn't believe it fully, I guessed the bar was Becca's own, I thought of what do, I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn't know when Catherine appeared behind me. "Dan!!" She called out.
I snapped out of my thoughts, her phone almost fell from my hands. I quickly hid it in my hands and folded them behind my back as I turned towards her smiling. "Oh darling, did you leave the water rushing? I hear sounds in the kitchen."
"No, I didn't." She moved closer to me. My hands were still behind my back.
"Sure, honey? Maybe you should go check it out." I said.
She glared at me and turned reluctantly towards the kitchen. When I saw she was in the kitchen, I quickly put the phone back on the sofa, turned the screen off and sat down. She returned and said, "I wonder what you heard, the faucet wasn't on."
"Oh. Pardon me. I thought it was on." I said and smiled.
She sat beside me and picked her phone up. For the next few minutes, there was silence and all what was in my head was Friday night.
"Hey, could you come over tomorrow night? Maybe we could have a drink." I said.
Catherine, staring at her phone, said, "Oh, no. I have to work at home. I'll be quite busy."
Hearing that, I smelt a rat, I was definite that she was hiding something. She had just lied. I wanted to challenge her but that wasn't evidence enough, I needed to get something concrete, something that could prove something was really going on. I anticipated Friday night. I just couldn't wait.
