Bitter Lies and A Word of Prayer.
I woke up to the ring of my phone on Saturday, Catherine was calling, I didn't pick at first, I was livid she woke me up, then she called again and I picked. "Hello, Dan! Where did you put your phone? I have called you bef..."
"Hey, slow down. What's up?" I interrupted.
"I missed your calls last night," She sighed. "I was so tired, I didn't even know where I put my phone."
I didn't say anything, there was silence for some seconds, she then said, "Dan, are you alright?"
"Where are you at, Cathy?" I asked. I was still laying on the bed.
"At home of course," She giggled. " Where else would I be?"
"Okay, I'll be at your place in an hour. Be ready." I said.
"Ready for what?" She asked.
"Don't worry, you'll find out." I smiled. The kind of smile villains had when they're about to cause mischief.
"Alright."
"Love you, Cathy."
"Yeah, love you too." She replied.
Those words, which were always sweet to my ears, sounded like bitter lies. I sat upright on my bed, bent over a little, with my elbows resting on my thighs, put my face in my hands and said, "God, why did this have to happen? I should have continued living without the knowledge that something was going on. Now I am too scared to confront her, I fear it may turn out true which might as well end everything. If it all ends, where the heck am I going to start from? Ah!" I brushed through my face with my palms. I stood up from the bed and went into the bathroom to have my bath. After bathing, I got dressed and went into the kitchen to prepare something to eat, at least I wasn't going to shout and cry on an empty belly at Cathy's house, so I fried some eggs and had it with coffee. That was enough to give me the strength I needed. I put on my sneakers, switched off the lights and was about stepping out when a thought came into my head to call on the Heavenly Father to intervene. I don't know how it happened, but I seemed to admire that thought at that moment, I was desperate to save my relationship. I wish I didn't have to face her, but I had to, I can't live with the knowledge I might be sharing my woman, so I stayed back and sat on the couch, my elbows resting on my thighs, my fists clenched together towards my mouth, I closed my eyes and began, "Our Father, which art in heaven. I approach you with sincerity, I have come begging. I know I've not been close to you, I have lived a life without your help, but now I have come for that help. I don't know what to say or how to say it, I just need your help in my relationship, I just want the best. Lead me not into temptation, let me not do something I'll regret later on. I believe in your power and glory. Hearken unto my pleas and request. Amen." I got up and left the house.
I got to Catherine's apartment and met her in the kitchen, "Hey, honey!" I closed the door and walked towards her.
"Hey." She replied. She had an apron and gloves on, with an hairnet.
"Are you preparing for a cooking competition?" I laughed gently. "Why are you all dressed up? In your own apartment."
"I woke up on the good side of the bed today." She smiled. She didn't look at me, she focused on the fryer and spatula in her hand.
"You sure did." I hugged her from behind. "What time did you go to bed last night?" I asked.
"I don't know. I didn't check the time, I just slept off." She turned the chicken with the spatula in her hand.
"When you're done cooking, there's something I wanna ask." I said, still hugging her.
"You can ask now. I can hear you."
"No, I wouldn't want the chicken to get burnt. I would be at the living room." I kissed her on the back of her head and walked away.
She finished cooking and brought a piece of the chicken on a plate to me, "Thank you." I said as I received the plate from her. We both sat on the floor.
"So, what's the matter?" She sat beside me as she chewed a piece of the chicken.
"Oh, yes. The matter." I dropped the plate by my side and continued. "So, where were you last night?"
She stared at me for some seconds and then said, "Daniel, I thought I told you before."
"Cathy, I'm serious right now, don't fool me."
"I was home, Dan. Where else would I be?"
"Cathy!" I yelled. "Just stop it. I was here last night and you weren't home, I called and you didn't pick up the phone. Where the heck were you?" My voice became raised.
Catherine couldn't look me in the eye again, she knew I had found out the truth, she didn't say a word.
"You never told me the meetings you had with your boss were at the bar." I said.
She looked at me, very surprised at my words. "Are you stalking me now, Dan?" She asked.
"Stalk? Are you tryna change the topic?" I replied.
"How did you know I was at the bar?"
"That's the bar I patronize often, Cathy." I definitely wasn't going to tell her I saw the text on her phone. "The question here is; why were you meeting your boss at a bar? And why were you both cuddling?"
Catherine closed her eyes, she was losing the argument, she didn't know what lie to say, she just remained silent.
"Cathy, is something going on between you and your boss? "I asked. "Are you having an affair with him?"
"No." She didn't look at me as she answered.
"Catherine, look me in the eye and answer that again."
She looked me in the eyes and saw anger and pity, she didn't know what to say, she started sobbing. "I can't, Dan. I can't look at you." She looked away.
"So, it's true. You're indeed having an affair with him. All my life has been a lie." I said. The anger in me disappeared, I became very emotional, I almost began sobbing with her. The one thing I was scared of finding out eventually became true.
"Chris was my lover before I met you. We had our differences back then so we decided to breakup. Our affair started again when I felt insecure around you, the message from Becca and the misunderstanding we had. I'd say Chris took advantage of that moment and made his move. I honestly don't know how I agreed, I just found it comfortable around him." She explained.
"Isn't he married?" I asked.
"He is." She answered.
"You're having an affair with a married man, Cathy. Jesus! You're unbelievable."
"I'm sorry, Dan." She continued sobbing.
"If your love for me had faded away, you would have at least let me know. I was so scared of losing you, Cathy. I loved you with everything I had. How long were you going to keep this a secret from me? Was that even the reason you waved away the marriage jokes we had the other day?" I spoke while staring into the air. Her sobbing became louder. "Watching you at the bar last night with him was the most horrific scene I have had in years. The most painful part of it was how you were ignoring my calls when I called you. I looked at you from afar, watching you ignore them and hug him. I came here, sat by the stairs for two hours like a kid locked out by his parents, waiting for my woman to come back so I could fall asleep in her arms, but you never did, you never returned. I couldn't get a taxi so late, I had to walk all the way home. You tortured me, Cathy. You made my life a living hell yesterday."
For the next minute, silence took over the room, she stopped sobbing, we both sat and stared at the wall. There was nothing left for me to say or ask, except I wanted to keep damaging my heart. The truth I was out to find was found, what else was left to say. I guessed my prayers didn't reach the Father in Heaven. I guessed I was on my own. I stood up and took my leave, neither of us said anything till I left her apartment.
