Becca (cont'd)

On getting to Catherine's house, I stood by her doorstep, closed my eyes and said a word of prayer, "Our father, who art in heaven. Help your son on earth today. Let it not be that Cathy figured something out. Amen." Then I knocked. "Who's there?" She asked from inside. Her voice was barely audible, like she was deep inside.
"Honey, it's me." I responded. "Please, God. Please, God." I muttered. I could hear footsteps approaching the door from inside and my heart beat faster. She opened the door and glanced at me with a confused look, "Come in." She said. She walked ahead, her pajamas was still on, her hair was rough and her eyes looked heavy, it was easy to tell she was still in bed when I knocked. "I am surprised you here this early. What's happening?" She asked.
Hearing that question felt reliving. "Seems she didn't come around last night." I pondered as I stared at her, waiting for me to reply. "I missed your calls last night, I thought something bad might have happened so I had to rush down here to check on you," I smiled. "But I'm glad you're okay." I moved closer to her and kissed her forehead.
"I wanted to come over last night, so I called the first two times to inform you I would be coming, but then my boss called in for a quick meeting which was why I called the last two times to inform you I wouldn't be coming anymore and to know if you were fine seeing you hadn't returned my calls, you still didn't pick. Where were you, Dan?"
"I... I was..." I sighed as I stammered. "Thing is, I slept off quite early last night, I was so tired."
"Were you? Or you were drunk and slept off." She shook her head as she finished her words.
I didn't say anything, it was better she thought of it that way than discover what really happened.
"Let me fix you something to eat." I said.
"No, thanks. I'm still sleepy. I was up all night, busy with my laptop. You can only help fix my bed for me to lay on it again." She walked towards her bedroom.
   "C'mon, it's morning already." I followed.
"Dan, please go back home. I need to rest."
"Alright. Forgive me for not picking your calls last night then."
"Forgiveness granted, just go. I don't want a headache this morning. I need to sleep." She walked me to the door.
"I'll call you later." I stood by the door and said.
"Yeah, yeah. Bye!" She closed the door.
It's very unlike Catherine to let me go just like that, I thought something was happening inside the bedroom, but no, I trust Catherine so much, she can't dare cheat on me, maybe she really needed to rest.

Now it was time to go and face Becca and find out what really happened the night before. When I got home, she had left and placed the key where I instructed, I unlocked the door, got inside and saw how tidy it was, she had cleaned the whole house, even if she didn't get the arrangements well, one could at least applaud her for trying. The bed had been neatly laid, my dirty clothes all put away in one corner of the room, the kitchen looked very fine and I began to wonder why she did everything. I went back into my room and sat on the bed, staring emptily at the wall opposite, thinking of Catherine and Becca, "Really, Catherine hasn't done this before. No way Cathy would clean my own house. Becca seems to be providing the comfort I need lately. Does this mean Cathy isn't the one for me again? No way, I have come too far with Cathy to be shaken by another woman. But I just can't ignore Becca and what she does." I didn't know if I was having a conversation with myself or two strangers with knowledge about my life possessed me and began arguing.
I cleared the thoughts and picked up my phone to call Becca. "Hey," I began when she answered. "I see what you did to my house, that's very kind of you."
She giggled, "C'mon, it's nothing, it's only necessary for me to. At least the bed needed to be neat."
The last part of her statement made my heart skip a beat. "I see," I cleared my throat, "Why the bed in particular?" I was hoping I could cure my curiosity with her reply.
"I'll leave you to figure that out. I've gotta go, I'm about to step into our Father's house."
   "Our father?" I was confused.
"The church, idiot. Have you forgotten today's Sunday?"
"Oh," I laughed softly, "I certainly didn't, I was just confused."
   "Yeah, bye." She hung up.

I stopped trying to figure out what happened the night before, whatever happened the night before is now in the past. I stood up and left the room.
