Chapter 9: Fifth Subject, Rachel Mannus
Elyse was exhausted from last night. As much as she had wanted to sleep, she couldn't. Recent events kept playing in her mind, and it was becoming harder and harder to shake away her visions of Jill. Why did she keep appearing to her? What did she want? What was she trying to tell her before? Elyse didn't have time to think on it further, and tried to focus on getting ready for the day.
When she left, she went through her classes as usual, and then to work. She hadn't seen or spoken to Nelson at all, but she wasn't too bothered. She thought he probably still needed some space to calm down before trying to talk. At the least, she'd go check on him after work, if he wasn't already there waiting for her. However, she didn't seem to be allowed to have a normal day at class or work. Jill started showing up more frequently, and when Elyse tried to ignore her or walk the other way, she would only find her again.
"Keep an eye on him." Jill would keep saying, "Don't go too far. Don't let him go too far. El, please."
Finally, Elyse couldn't handle it during her work shift, and she bolted outside.
"Leave me alone." She said, "I don't know what you want, so just stop it."
"Elyse, you alright?" Katherine had come to check on her.
"I hope so. Really long day." Elyse responds.
"Why don't you go in the break room and relax for a bit? I can cover for you" Katherine offers.
"I'll try."
The two women walked back inside, and Elyse took Katherine's advice. After about 15 minutes, Elyse was able to finish her shift with no further problems. When she was done, she walked out and was actually surprised to see Nelson waiting for her.
"Hey." He says.
"Hey." She responds, "I'm surprised to see you here tonight."
"I've been here every other night." He answers, "And you're still my girlfriend."
"Well, I was actually going to see if you're okay after last night before meeting with the others. After you stormed off, we agreed to move on and let Rachel get her turn. You are welcome to join us, if you aren't gonna snap again."
"I'll do my best."
Elyse then notices more injuries on his face that weren't there before.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, why?"
"How did you get hurt this time?"
"It's nothing serious. Come on, let's go."
The two then walk over to meet with the rest of the group as a thunderstorm slowly forms, and rain leaks inside the building.
"Well, I must say I'm surprised you came back." Randy says, referring to Nelson.
"I talked some sense into him." Elyse responds, "Where's David?"
"Hasn't shown yet." Joe answers.
"Well, we could at least get some things set up before he gets here." Elyse says, helping Joe and Randy place buckets to catch the rain leaking in.
"How did it happen?" Rachel asks, also seeing the new cuts and bruises on Nelson's face.
"I was playing hockey." He responds.
"I have never seen you do that?" Elyse comments, but she's ignored.
"Look, about last night-" Nelson starts, but Rachel cut him off.
"It's okay." She says.
"Still no-show Labraccio." Joe comments.
"You know, this really isn't like him at all." Randy adds.
"Maybe something came up and he's running late?" Elyse offers.
"It's just his way of trying to stop me." Rachel says, "It won't work. I'm ready."
"I don't think it is at all a good idea to do this without David." Randy says.
"We don't need Dave." Nelson states.
"Can you do this?" Rachel asks.
"Can you trust me?" Nelson asks back.
"I trust Elyse more than you, but let's do it anyway." Rachel responds.
"I guess I'll take that as a good thing. See you soon Rachel." Elyse says as the boys get started.
A short time after, David came rushing in.
"How long has she been under?" He asks, his tone seeming frantic.
"One-twenty." Elyse responds.
"We're bringing her back." David states.
"No, we're not." Nelson argues.
David ignored him and started asking Joe and Randy questions and giving directions Elyse could barely make out.
"She hasn't been under long enough." Nelson continues to counter.
"Just do it, Joe." David says.
"We said 4:25"
"Just do it!"
Joe didn't respond and immediately got to work, with Randy assisting.
"Don't expect any hugs and kisses for this." Nelson tells David.
"What's going on?" Elyse asks.
"Why don't you ask Dr. Death?" David responds, "What's going on, Nelson?"
"Nothing." He responds, "Just bringing Rachel back a little early, that's all."
"That's all, huh?" David counters.
"Come on guys, don't start now." Joe interjects, "Think about Rachel."
"Whatever this is, we'll discuss it after." Elyse adds.
A tense silence formed among the group, only breaking when the boys were working. The whole group was thinking exclusively on getting Rachel back for the moment. At one of the worst times, the power went out from the rain.
"What the hell is going on?" Nelson asks while Joe and Elyse rush to fix it
"It's the fuse." Joe says, "Shorted out. Maybe a circuit."
"Joe, you charged the battery, right?" Randy asks.
"Shit." Joe responds.
"I can fix this, help them." Elyse tells him as the boys keep scrambling to work while she tries to fix the power. She could barely listen to them as she did, their voices blending together. The next thing she knew, the room went silent. "What's going on, boys?"
"We have her." David responds.
Elyse let out a sigh of relief and rejoined the group, helping Rachel up before the latter went inside the bathroom to get her bearings and have a moment by herself.
"I still don't understand why you stopped us." Randy says to David.
"Something happened to me today, something very strange." David explains.
"So that's why you stopped us?" Nelson asks.
"Listen to me, there was this girl, Winnie Hicks, I think it was. I was in elementary school with her. We used to make fun of her, alright? I was on the train, and I heard someone calling me names. I turned around, I swear to God, she was standing right in front of me! Still only 10 years old." David explains.
"Maybe it was a hallucination, or maybe you fell asleep. Thoughts triggered by submerged guilt." Randy offers.
"No, I was not asleep." David insists.
"Guys, I've seen some odd things from my past too." Joe adds, joining the group.
"So have I." Elyse adds.
"I thought it might be brain damage." Joe continues.
"In your case, it probably is." Randy comments. "I'm gonna get some of this on tape."
"Steckle, shut that thing off. This is personal." Joe says.
"Go ahead, Joe." David says.
"I've been haunted by these images of women that I videotaped without them knowing." Joe admits, "They're all members of the Joe Hurley Video Library."
"What?" Randy asks.
"When this is over, Get help." Elyse comments, "That is not okay."
"We'll come back to that. What have you seen, Harmon?" Randy asks.
"My sister, Jill." Elyse says, "I don't understand why, or how. She died a few months after Nelson and I started dating. She keeps saying 'don't go too far.' I have no idea what it means, but as much as I love her, I just want her to leave me alone."
"What about you, Nelson?" David asks, who's come looking for you?"
"His name is Billy Mahoney." Nelson responds, "He's an 8 year old kid we used to pick on at school. It's no big deal."
"No big deal, huh?" David asks, "Then why don't you tell us what happened to your face."
"Sometimes the little fella gets carried away." Nelson responds.
"So that means the other night walking home, and your one freakout..." Elyse pauses, putting 2 and 2 together.
"Wait a minute. Wait." Randy interjects, "I can understand Dave nodding off on the train, El missing her sister, and pervert here having a couple of flashbacks. But you're saying this guy physically touches you? That is not a hallucination, and it is not possible!"
"This whole lab's not possible!" Nelson responds, "Or is it?"
"This is too weird." Joe states.
"Yeah, this beyond what I was expecting." Elyse adds.
"Weird? We've experienced death." Nelson counters, "Now somehow, we've brought our sins back physically. And they're pissed."
"When did you know about this?" David asked.
"I had my suspicions after El went." Nelson responds.
"Before Joe went. Before I went. Before she went and you didn't say a word!" David says angrily.
"I was going to say something myself, but I thought it was a one time thing. Just me recovering from going through." Elyse says.
"That's wrong, Nelson." Randy adds.
"Jesus Christ! I thought we were doctors, scientists." Nelson responds.
"You call yourself a scientist?" Randy asks, "It is reckless, immoral, and unethical for you to withhold findings from us."
"Rachel Mannus may have the answers to life and death. Five minutes, imagine that. She was under for five minutes! Now if she walks out of that ladies' room with those answers, the whole world will worship her." Nelson states, "Just like you do."
"You should have told us, Nelson." David says, before turning to walk away.
"You wouldn't have done it." Nelson counters.
"At least we would have had a choice!" David yells before leaving.
Nelson just watched before he turned and left as well.
"We're fucked." Joe finally says after a while.
"We are." Elyse responds.
