Chapter 8: Fourth Subject, David Labraccio
Nelson was the first to wake up the next morning. As daylight peeked in through the window, he looked at Elyse, still asleep and snuggled up next to him. He didn't dare move so he wouldn't wake her, all while enjoying how beautiful she looked. Her short blonde hair managed to look amazing, and like it always managed to stay in the right places. He couldn't help but smile at her, all while thinking how lucky he was to have her.
Not long after Elyse was finally up.
"Hi." She says.
"Hey. Sleep well?" He asks.
"Mhm. How's your face feeling?"
"Stings a little, but nothing I can't handle. Do you have work or class today?"
"No work, and while I probably should get ready for class, I really feel like skipping today. What about you? Do you have class?"
"Not this time."
"Sounds like a perfect day to me. Getting to spend all day together before we meet up with the others tonight."
"I guess we better actually get up then."
The two got ready for the day, and Elyse added the previous night's events into her journal. After that, they spent the first few hours doing some quick studying before they sidetracked into other topics. It barely felt like any time had passed, but it was already almost time to get ready to head out. Elyse quickly ran a brush through her hair while Nelson cleaned up and re-stitched the cut on his face and changed into a clean shirt.
"Almost ready?" Elyse asked when he re-entered the room.
"Yeah, just need a sec..." Nelson responds, his thoughts trailing off as he stared at one of the doors. Elyse looked in the same direction, but didn't understand what had his attention.
"You alright?" She asked, confused.
"We need to go." Nelson responds, almost panicked.
Before Elyse could respond, He quickly grabbed her hand and his coat before rushing out the door.
"What's going on?" Elyse asked as they ran down the hall and down some stairs, but got no response. "Is something wrong?" None of her questions got a response.
Eventually, they stopped running and Nelson calmed down from his panicked state.
"Sorry." He says after a short pause, "I thought I saw something."
"You had me worried for a moment." Elyse responds. "Are you sure you'll be okay tonight?"
"Yeah. I'll be fine." Let's go.
The two walked in silence once more to meet up with the others, but this time, they were some of the last ones to show up.
"Sorry we're late." Elyse says.
"What the hell happened to your face?" David asks Nelson.
"Some guys. Very big guys. Doesn't matter." Nelson responds.
Before anyone could ask further, Joe entered the room.
"Where the hell have you been?" Randy asks.
"I don't feel very well." Joe responds. "What the hell happened to you?" He asks Nelson, also curious about the cut on his face.
"Enough." He responds, "Worry about your camera. El, get the timer ready."
Elyse nods and does so while the rest get to work with David. The next trial had begun. There was silence for a short time, only interrupted by Randy's logging.
"What hangs in the air palpably? Is it hope, is it fear? Is it the musky mist of death?"
"Shut up, Steckle." Joe interrupts
"No, you shut up!" Randy counters.
"Quiet, both of you." Elyse adds.
"What if he didn't make it back?" Nelson asks, "Would you miss him, Rachel?"
Rachel didn't respond, but gave him an annoyed look.
"One minute." Elyse informs the others.
After the time had passed, the group got to work to get David back.
"Ninety degrees." Rachel informs.
"What do you say we give him another five seconds?" Nelson asks suddenly.
"What?" Randy asks.
"Ten. Why not 10? We've got a little time to decide." Nelson continues.
"Are you serious?" Joe asks.
"Now is not the time for this. We can't risk losing him for good." Elyse adds.
"Harmon's right, guys. No kidding around here." Randy adds.
"Who's kidding?" Nelson asks.
"What the hell is going on here?" Joe asks, mostly to himself.
Suddenly, one of the window covers opened.
"El, get it!" Nelson says, and Elyse rushed to do so with Randy taking over as timer while she did.
"Two twenty. Hand it over." Rachel says to Nelson, asking for the defibs.
"This is my lab." Nelson responds. "Three hundred joules. Charged. Clear."
There was a tense silence for a moment before going straight back to work. Nothing was seeming to work, and the others were getting more worried with each second. When Elyse rejoined the group, Joe practically shoved the camera into her hands.
"You take it." He says.
"Sure." She responded and continued filming where he left off while he helped the others. Not long after, they were able to get David back.
There was a collective sigh of relief from everyone as they relaxed a bit.
"That was close." Randy says "That was way too close."
"Agreed." Elyse adds. "Too close for comfort."
After they got David up and cleaned the area, they brought him back to his place to help him get food and recover. They also watched back the video of what had just happened. Pausing right before he was put under.
"What did you say there?" Randy asks.
"Hoka hey." David responds. "It's a war cry from the Sioux Indians. Very macho. It means 'today is-'"
"'Today is a good day to die.'" Nelson interrupts. "So was it, Dave? Was today a good day to die?"
"I don't know if I was dead. I may have felt something." David responds, "Like a dream or just a bunch of stuff stored up inside my mind."
"You were brain-dead." Nelson informs, "There was no mind."
"Yeah, but some electrical current still circulating through my body.." David starts.
"It would have shown up on the EEG." Nelson counters, "David, you were dead. So why don't you just tell us what happened?"
"Well, it's hard to verbalize." David explains, "It's like being paranoid without the fear. Like being watched. But I don't know, it was probably just you guys standing over me."
"Watching? Who could be watching?" Randy asks.
"The dead." Nelson answers.
"I didn't say that." David says.
"But the skeptic did feel something, didn't ya?" Nelson responds, "I'm going again."
"No way, Nelson! I've been bumped twice." Rachel argues, standing.
"Bidding starts at four minutes." Nelson counters.
"Four minutes?" Rachel asks.
"Yeah. Labraccio went for 3:50." Nelson states.
"And we almost lost him." Elyse adds.
"Anything under four minutes right now would be redundant." Nelson continues.
"No one is going for four minutes!" Randy interjects.
"Four twenty-five." Rachel states.
"Five minutes." Nelson counters.
"I'm next or I'm out for good." Rachel counters back.
"Without her help, five minutes is gonna be hard enough." David adds. "But without me..."
"Or me." Randy adds.
"Count me out too, Nelson." Joe adds.
"And I don't know near enough to do any of it on my own." Elyse adds, "If I stay, I'd just be getting you killed for good, and you know full well why I can't do that."
"Well, mutiny at last." Nelson says after a short pause, "You know, I trusted you, all of you, with an idea that was so simple and brilliant. You get one in a lifetime."
"Why don't you give it a rest, Nelson." David says.
"No, you give it a rest!" Nelson interjects, "None of you had the foresight or the balls to do any of this until I did it. Rachel, you want to go next? Be my guest. Fuck the rest of you. This was my idea. You're just tourists." With that, he stormed off.
"Nelson, wait a sec!-" Elyse started, but he was already gone. "Dammit." She added quietly, running a hand through her hair in frustration.
"Real charmer you got there, Harmon." Joe says, semi sarcastically.
"Shut the fuck up, Joe!" Elyse snaps before letting out an annoyed sigh. "Look, we're all tired, and I think it's getting to us. We should all get some sleep, especially you, David. I'll try and talk to him tomorrow after he calms down. Rachel, you still wanna do it?"
"Yes." She responds.
"Then we'll meet up tomorrow night and try again." Elyse continues, "You boys good with that?"
Randy, Joe, and David nod silently.
"Then I'll see you guys then. Goodnight." Elyse then left and headed back to her place.
During the walk, she spotted Jill again on a street corner, stopping to look at her. Neither spoke for a moment, and Jill slowly started walking towards her, Elyse backing up as she did so. Jill walked slightly faster, and Elyse took off in a sprint before she could say anything. By the time she made it home, Jill was gone. Elyse then quickly wrote down what happened in her journal before calling it a night.
