Chapter 7: Third Subject, Joseph Hurley
When Elyse woke up the next morning, her head was pounding. She waited for several moments before finally getting up and getting ready for the day. As she went through her clothes, deciding on something casual: blue jeans, simple black shoes, and a white t-shirt with a dark gray jacket. When she was done, Nelson was up and waiting for her.
"Hey." He says, "How are you feeling?"
"My head hurts, but other than that, I think I'm okay." Elyse responds, "I should be fine once I'm at work. We're meeting up again tonight, right?"
"Yeah. Joe's going next." Nelson responds.
"Well, I better have some snarky comments planned for him." Elyse jokes, getting her stuff ready. "I should head out."
"See you tonight."
Elyse then headed out to the library, and immediately got to work. She helped people with finding and checking out books, organizing the shelves, and using any free time she had to write down what she could remember from last night in her journal. Some time passed, and it was in the middle of her shift, when something started to feel off. Nothing seemed out of place when she checked, but she just couldn't shake the feeling. She walked towards the back shelves, looking for any books out of place to distract her. The air around her started to feel cold, and a figure appeared out of the corner of her eye. She turned to the figure, about to ask them if they needed any help, but stopped herself the second she saw who it was.
"Jill?" She asked.
There was no response. Jill just stood there, looking at Elyse with an expression she couldn't read. She approached her sister, but only got a few steps closer before Elyse felt a hand on her shoulder.
She jumped, startled by the sudden contact, and turned to see one of her coworkers right behind her.
"Whoa, you alright?" The coworker, Katherine, asked.
"Yeah, I..." Elyse turned back to where Jill stood, but she was nowhere to be seen. "I thought I saw something. Must have zoned out."
"Well, if you can zone back in, we need your help." Katherine says.
Elyse nodded and got back to work, but she still couldn't shake seeing Jill. Her first thought was that she was just tired, or still recovering from the previous night, but something about the encounter felt too real. It couldn't be real, though. That would be impossible, right? Maybe Elyse was just tired, or her mind was making her see things that weren't there. She quickly added the encounter in her journal just in case, and maybe she would talk about it later. Hopefully, this would just be a one time thing. Maybe it only happened to her? It was too soon to tell, as she was only the 2nd person to go under. Those would be questions for another time.
Things seemed to return to normal for the rest of her shift, which Elyse was grateful for. The second she was done, she booked it out of the door, where Nelson was waiting as usual.
"Hey, still feeling alright?" He asks her as they start walking to meet the others.
"Yeah, I'm still good." Elyse responds. "There was a moment where I felt a little dizzy, but that was it. Sadly, that meant I didn't have time to prepare any comebacks for anything Joe might say"
"That's good. And I'm sure you'd figure something out." Nelson says.
Elyse nods in response and continues their walk in silence until they meet up with the others. As usual, Randy and Joe were already there and setting up what they could.
"And there she is." Joe says, referring to Elyse.
"Don't tell me you'd actually think I'm backing out after I already did it." Elyse responds, "Besides, I can't miss seeing how you last."
"I'm already going longer than you, so don't think I'll back out."
"Alright, that's enough." Randy says, already done with the two. "Think you can be the camera person tonight El?"
"Given it's one of the few things I can do without getting in the way, yes." Elyse responds, taking the camera and prepping it.
David and Rachel joined the group a short moment later, and the group was ready to go. Joe was put under, Elyse started filming, and the third test began. Elyse watched silently as the others worked, doing her best to stay out of their way. Similar to the previous trials, getting Joe back was a rough start.
"Nothing." Randy says when the defibs weren't working.
"Starting CPR." Nelson responds, immediately doing so.
"CPR and adrenalin, and nothing!" Randy adds.
"Come on, Nelson, let me try." David says.
"We're running out of time!" Rachel informs the group.
"Come on, Nelson, let me try." David repeats, more insistent.
"I'm doing everything I fucking can!" Nelson responds, irritated.
"Nelson, step back. Let him do it." Elyse chimes in."
Nelson continued to ignore them until David had to move him aside and take over. Frustrated, he ran a hand through his hair and went to stand by Elyse, keeping his back to the others.
"Relax, we'll get it." Elyse whispers to him as quietly as possible.
A few seconds later, Joe woke up coughing, and Rachel gave him O2 immediately. Randy noted the success in his recorder, and Elyse stopped filming. Once Joe recovered enough to sit up, The rest of the group cleaned up as usual and headed out to a local diner to get food, drinks, and log what happened.
"It was great." Joe starts.
"Here it comes." David interrupts sarcastically.
"Why don't you just let him talk, Dave?" Nelson responds.
"Define 'great.'" Rachel asks.
"I don't know, it's not thinking about the past or the future." Joe continues, "It's difficult to explain, maybe impossible."
"Yeah, dying is funny that way." David remarks.
"Dave, Nelson and Elyse are right, there is definitely activity beyond death." Joe says.
"Oh no, he's delusional. He just said something nice about me." Elyse jokes.
"No, really." Joe continues, "The experience was strange. It was almost erotic."
"He's dead and he gets laid." Randy jokes.
"No, wait a sec. What do you mean, erotic?" Nelson asks.
"I don't want you to think it was casually sexual by any means." Joe explains.
"No, never would have occurred to me in a million years, no way." Randy interjects sarcastically.
"It was friendly. There was something vaguely feminine guiding me." Joe finishes.
"It sounds like the result is different between each individual." Elyse comments, "And not one universal thing."
"This could be the conquest of our generation." Randy states. The last great frontier. First you had the sea, then America, the West, the Moon, Mr. Leary, drugs, the inner journey, Ms. MacLaine, and our illustrious former First Lady, the outer journey. But this, this is ours!"
"Well, we did have disco." David jokes.
"We have finally found something worthwhile. Something to upstage those fucking baby boomers." Randy continues, ignoring David's comment.
"Watch your mouths." The waitress scolded, half listening to the group's conversation.
"I found something." Nelson states, "Okay, let's not forget that."
"We did." Elyse adds.
"I came back from the dead tonight." Joe tells the waitress.
"Doesn't surprise me. We had Elvis in here last night." The waitress responds, unamused. "Pay when you're ready, okay?" She then walks back to do her work.
"Joe, did you find it difficult at the end, getting back?" Rachel asks after a short pause.
"No, not that I remember." Joe responds.
"Oh, but you remember everything else, right?" David says semi-sarcastically. "I think you guys are full of shit. I'm not buying any of this."
"Yeah, well I probably wouldn't buy it either." Nelson says, "Unless I've been there. So, what about it Dave?"
"Yeah, you're an atheist. You got nothing to lose, right?" Joe asks.
"Best worst case scenario, it's all a void, and we're all seeing things." Elyse adds, not fully trying to pressure him, and also trying to ease some of the tension.
"I'm going next." Rachel says.
"Wait a minute, nobody's going next." David says, " You looking for answers? There's no answers here. I think Harmon said it perfectly, you just saw what you wanted to see. Give it up. It's too dangerous."
"Who the hell are you to-" Nelson starts, but is cut off by Rachel.
"We can't turn back now. I'm going further." She says, "One fifty."
"Two minutes." David counters.
"Whoa, wait, you just said-" Elyse starts.
"I changed my mind." David responds, "Two minutes."
"Two ten." Rachel counters.
"Two twenty." David counters back.
"Well, looks like we found a winner." Nelson states when Rachel pauses. She then angrily got up and stormed out.
"Enjoying yourself, Nelson?" David asks before he stood and followed Rachel out.
"We all good?" Elyse asks, and the others responded with silence.
"Joe.. El.. Was there anything negative about your experience? Anything negative at all?" Nelson asks.
"No, nothing." Joe responds.
"Nothing too abnormal." Elyse added, although she was slightly hesitant. "I think we should head out and call it a night."
"Agreed. We'll pick up again tomorrow." Randy says.
The four of them got up, paid for the food, and headed out. Randy and Joe split off one way, and Elyse and Nelson went another way.
"You not heading home?" Nelson asked her.
"Not yet." Elyse responds, "Besides, I'd rather walk back with you first. Don't wanna leave until I have to."
"Be careful what you wish for." Nelson responds as they keep walking.
As they walked, they cut through an alley that looked slightly sketchy, which made Elyse a little nervous. Nelson saw this and put his arm around her, keeping her close to him as they walked. Most of the other people left them alone, but one woman said something unsettling, and sent the two quickly hurrying off. They walked down into a subway area, hoping they weren't followed.
Suddenly, something caught Nelson's attention and he ran off, leaving Elyse confused at what he could have noticed. She didn't see anything unusual when she looked around, but she carefully started to follow at a slower pace.
"Elyse." Jill's voice called, and Elyse stopped seeing Jill again.
"Jill?" She asked. "What are you-? I don't-"
"Be careful." Jill warns. "Keep an eye on him. Don't go too far."
"I don't understand." Elyse responds.
Before either female could speak, Elyse is distracted by sounds she could barely make out coming from the direction Nelson ran off to. When she looked back to Jill, she was gone. Elyse ran off and found Nelson on the ground, a few injuries on his face.
"Nelson? What happened?" She asked.
"I'm not sure yet myself." He responds, standing "Let's just get out of here."
The two then hurried back to Nelson's apartment, where he went to clean up.
"I'm sure you won't mind if I stay the night, correct?" Elyse asks, "That was just too weird."
"I was just about to ask if you would stay." Nelson responds.
After the two got ready for the night, Nelson double checked the doors and windows before they climbed into bed together and fell asleep.
