Chapter 3: First Subject, Nelson Wright

Elyse also cursed under her breath, until she saw who entered. Thankfully, it wasn't a guard, or someone who would get them into trouble. It was David Labraccio, one of the other students.

"Is he dead?" David asks.

"He's only sleeping." Randy says, "Thank God you're here to talk some sense into these people."

"I'll do it." He says to Rachel.

"What?" Randy asks.

"You're taking over?" Rachel adds.

"I've got nothing to lose." David responds.

"Just his life!" Randy protests.

"I can get him back." David insists, "Just stop his heart. One minute, bring him right back."

"Don't think I couldn't have." Rachel says, slightly annoyed.

"Does it matter? Just someone do it." Elyse adds.

There was a tense silence, before David broke it.

"Clear." He says.

Joe tries to stop him, but quickly backs off as David zaps Nelson, which also causes Elyse to jump slightly in surprise.

"What the fuck are you doing?" He asks, but is ignored.

.

"Asystole." David reports.

"You are killing him. It's called murder." Randy protests once more, "No wonder you got tossed."

"This is not the kind of shit I want on my transcript." Joe adds.

"Shut up, both of you." Elyse tells them.

"Please don't. Don't do anymore." Randy pleads. "I did not come to medical school to murder my classmates, no matter how deranged they might be."

Rachel ignored them, monitoring the machinery.

"Flatline." She states, removing the mask. Another short silence followed.

"They're getting smaller." Randy says, referring to the EEG, "He's dying."

"Brain death." Rachel reports, "Now it's real."

"Start filming." David tells Joe.

"Let me defib him." Randy says, "He's dead, isn't that enough? Let me try and bring him back."

"Just watch the door." David tells him.

"Excuse me, I don't wanna ruin anyone's evening, but are we in a room with a dead men?" Joe asks.

"Oh my God." Randy quietly explains.

"Quiet, both of you." Elyse scolds, more than done with the two.

"One minute to go." Rachel says, "El, can you keep time?"

"Yeah." Elyse responds.

"Start filming." David repeats.

Reluctantly, Joe pulls the camera up and does so, as the rest of the group wastes no time preparing for the next steps.

"30 seconds left." Elyse reports.

"Okay, let's heat him up." David instructs as he and Rachel get to work.

"20 seconds." Rachel states, "89, 90, 91..."

"Standing by with sodium bicarbonate." David adds.

"Charging the paddles." Randy adds.

"Charged." David says, taking them from Randy.

"Monitor the EKG." Rachel orders.

At this point, Elyse stepped back slightly to stay out of their way.

"Body temp: 93 degrees." Randy reports.

"Alright, here we go." David says, "Clear!" He zaps Nelson, but nothing happens. "What have we got?" He asks.

"Not a goddamn thing." Randy responds.

"Up me to 300." David tells Rachel. "All charged. Clear."

Zap. Nothing.

"Begin CPR." David states as he switches and starts counting.

"Sodium bicarbonate and epi in." Rachel adds.

As she and David continued, Joe kept filming, and Randy and Elyse watched nervously (the former repeatedly saying "Oh my God" under his breath while the latter tried not to move around too much and be a distraction.)

"98 degrees." Rachel reports.

"Hit him again. 350." Randy says, stepping in to help.

"Clear!" David shouts.

Zap.

"Got him!" Joe exclaims.

"O2 up. Steckle help me." Rachel orders.

Elyse let out a sigh of relief and ran her hand through her hair before slowly walking back over.

"Nelson, can you hear us?" Rachel asks quietly.

"Welcome back, man." David adds.

"You're back." Elyse adds.

"Nelson you crazy motherfucker, you did it!" Joe practically yells.

"Jesus Christ!" Is all Randy manages to say.

"Steckle, that's some bedside manner," Joe tells him, "You'll make one hell of a doctor."

"Suck me." Randy responds, completely done with Joe for the night.

"I can't believe we really just did this." Elyse says.
