Chapter 2: The Night of the Experiment

Night had fallen by the time they had arrived. As they walked through the building, Elyse felt a chill and pulled her coat closer.

"Man, this place is giving me the creeps." She says, "And it has to be here why?"

"Well, everything's all here." Nelson responds, "Just a matter of getting it all set up. Much easier than trying to move it all elsewhere without drawing attention."

"So, what do you want me to do?" Elyse asks.

"Help me set up for now." Nelson says, instructing her on what needed to be where.

While they were setting up, they heard two male voices enter the room. The voices belonged to Randy Steckle and Joe Hurley. Elyse turned to face them as they entered, smiling and giving a small wave as Randy reached for the light switch.

"Not those lights." Nelson warns, "Security will come running. Set up over the grate. I just got the boiler going."

"I must say, I'm surprised you even agreed to this, Harmon." Randy says.

"You really think that?" Elyse asks, laughing, "I think this is absolutely insane. I only agreed because I couldn't talk him out of it."

"So you're really gonna do this?" Randy asks.

"Just humor the man." Joe responds.

Elyse just shook her head and removed her coat, setting somewhere out of the way as Nelson explained everything to the boys.

"You're gonna take me down with nitrous, sodium pentathol and a refrigerated blanket. I've got some chilled D5W in the cooler. When my body temperature hits 86 degrees, you're gonna hit me with 200 joules. The shock will stop my heart. When the heart is dead, take the mask off." He instructs.

"Wait, I thought you said Rachel was coming." Randy interrupts.

"Rachel? She's in on this too?" Elyse asks, "Or did she say no, and then yes, like the rest of us? I'm assuming the latter."

"El, shut the door." Nelson responds, not answering the question, "I"m gonna draw 20 ccs, you handle the injections." He then says to the boys, "When the EEG flatlines, the brain is dead. I'll be exploring. Give me 30 seconds. Set the blanket to warm and take me up to 93 degrees. Slowly. Inject 1 cc of adrenalin, and at one minute, Joe you come in with the defibs. And you bring me back to life."

"With brain damage." A female voice says. The group turns to see Rachel walking in. "Resembling in many ways a Cabbage Patch doll." She adds.

"Not with a body temperature of 86 degrees." Nelson responds, "Dr. Mannus, will you handle the injections?"

Rachel nodded silently and set her coat aside as she helped with the set up.

"Wait a minute." Randy interjects, "Quite simply, why are you doing this?"

"Quite simply, it's to see if there's anything beyond death." Nelson says, "Philosophy failed. Religion failed. Now it's up to the physical sciences. I think mankind deserves to know."

"So you're doing this for mankind?" Joe asks, "Now that is the funniest thing I've heard. Hey, Harmon, you believe this?"

"I'll admit, it is a bit of a stretch." Elyse responds.

"This letter absolves you of any responsibility. Just in case." Nelson says, ignoring their comments and handing them an envelope, which Joes takes and opens, starting to read the document.

"This isn't for mankind. This is for Nelson." Randy says, "Why do I suddenly see you on 60 Minutes, sandwiched in between Andy Rooney and a Subaru commercial? 'Tonight, a brilliant young medical student who dared to experience death and come back.'" At this point, Nelson was shirtless, and Elyse had taken the letter from Joe, skimming over it before she handed it to Randy.

"Fame is inevitable." Nelson responds.

"That's the wrong reason." Rachel counters.

"It's the right idea." Nelson says, "Dr. Hurley, electrodes. Come on, Joe. Don't you wanna be on 60 Minutes?"

Joe didn't respond as he and Rachel continued with the set up. Randy was reading the letter by a window, and Elyse shook her head, choosing not to say anything for now.

"Rachel, how about a little nitrous?" Nelson asks, "At least I get to go out with a laugh. Dr. Hurley, get the blanket." Joe did so, as Rachel started up the machines. "We're all professionals. I'm sure this'll go very smoothly." He adds.

"Nelson, if you die, can I have your apartment?" Joe asks.

Before anyone could respond, Elyse smacked him hard on the back of the head.

"Ow! Come on, it was a joke!" Joe protests.

"It's not funny." Elyse tells him.

"You need to learn to relax, Harmon." Joe responds.

"Stop being an idiot and I will." Elyse says.

"One minute." Nelson reminds them, "Don't be late. Start filming now. You'll have a complete record of the experiment. Promise me you'll go through with this." The girls nod in response, while the boys are distracted. "What, no kiss goodbye, El?" He asks Elyse.

She holds back a laugh before leaning close to him. "Come back first, then I'll kiss you." She responds before stepping away.

"We'll see you soon." Rachel says, before placing the mask on his face. "Ninety-six degrees." She reports as Joe turns the camera on them.

"This letter does not mean shit." Randy says, rejoining the group. "Let him sleep it off. He'll have a dream and think he went to heaven, okay?"

"Good idea." Joe agrees, lowering the camera, "Good night, Nelson."

"Now I know why I'm here." Rachel says, looking at the boys, then Elyse.

"You and me both." Elyse adds. "Moral support alone seemed odd."

"I've expressed myself very clearly for the record. Good night." Randy says, turning to leave.

"Steckle's right. Are you willing to risk med school, your future, all for Nelson's fame?" Joe adds.

"Well, since I'm not a med student like the rest of you, I don't have that to worry about." Elyse responds.

"How about your English Master's, then?" Joe counters.

"Someone's coming!" Randy warns, interrupting them.

"Oh, shit." Joe swore.
