Chapter 11: Making Amends
Elyse and Rachel rushed out and ran back to where they've been the previous nights, the former explaining what happened during the phone call.
"If he tries to go through with this, it'll be suicide." Rachel says.
"Sounded like he knows that." Elyse responds, "From how he was talking, he doesn't seem to think he'll be coming back. This is what Jill was trying to warn me about."
"Let's just hope we're not too late, and the guys figure it out and get there first."
The girls kept running, not letting anything slow them down until they reached the building. They were both relieved to see David's truck parked nearby, but it wasn't enough. They still needed to hurry. When they entered the main room, David, Joe, and Randy were already scrambling to get Nelson back.
"He called us." Elyse says the second she and Rachel entered the room, "He called me."
"It's been over nine minutes." Rachel adds, checking her watch.
"Nine minutes?" Randy asks.
David cursed as Rachel joined in to help the others. Elyse felt more powerless than normal as she watched, since she didn't know how she could help. All she could do at the moment was stay on the side where she wouldn't be in the way, holding Nelson's hand tight in hers.
"Come on." She says quietly, ignoring the voices of the others as they kept working, "Please don't leave us. Come back. Come back."
Slowly, the others started to lose hope, which only scared Elyse even more when she took over for Rachel to help out.
"It's been 12 minutes!" Randy yells, "He is dead."
David and Elyse ignored it and kept trying.
"Forget about it, Dave. We lost him." Joe adds loudly. Not quite yelling, but almost.
David still refused to accept it and was getting more intense as he started yelling. Joe had also stepped in to pull Elyse away while Rachel yelled at David to stop.
"No." Elyse responded the second Joe touched her.
"Harmon."
"No!"
"Elyse, there's nothing more you can do." The more Joe tried to pull her away, the more she resisted.
"Get off me!" She couldn't hold back the tears anymore as she continued yelling "I have to help! He can't leave us! He can't!"
"We did what we could." Joe responds, finally pulling her away.
David angrily backed off and took it out on one of the walls, while Rachel took Joe's place in trying to comfort Elyse, who's heartbroken cries were the main sound breaking the silence in the room.
"We're all responsible for this." Randy says, defeated.
"Maybe we deserve this." Joe adds.
"No. It's not fair and it's not right." David says angrily before turning to face the door and looking up at the ceiling. "I'm sorry, God. I'm sorry we stepped on your fucking territory! I'm sorry! Isn't that enough?"
"Apparently not." Randy says, "I'll call the police."
As the rest of the boys talked, Elyse calmed down enough that she wasn't screaming. Slowly, she moved away from Rachel and back to Nelson, and this time no one tried to stop her. She returned to his side and held his hand again, just as she did moments ago.
"When he called, when I talked to him. I could hear it in how he spoke. He felt... He felt like he deserved this. That he deserved to die." She says.
"Bullshit!" David responds, turning back to face the group. "It was a mistake. He was just a little kid. And to leave you like this... he doesn't deserve to die!" He then went straight for the defibs as Rachel pulled Elyse back for safety, all while Randy and Joe continued to protest. David didn't care, and soon the rest of the group tried once more to bring Nelson back. This time, their efforts were successful.
"We've got him! We fucking got him!" Joe exclaims.
"Come on, we're right here." Elyse adds quietly.
Shortly after, Nelson slowly opened his eyes, and there was a collective sigh of relief from the group. He tried to say something, but no one could understand him, until David leaned in closer to listen.
"He said it wasn't such a good day to die." David tells the others.
No one else in the group responded, but were happy that they didn't lose him for good.
"Don't you dare scare us like that again." Elyse says, and Nelson just squeezed her hand in response, smiling at her.
"I think we can all agree to never do anything like this again." Joe says, "This was way too close."
"And this stays between us." Randy adds, "Although, it would have been one hell of a story."
"Actually, it still can be." Elyse says, "I've been keeping a journal of everything, writing what I could remember from each night. With a few creative changes, and with everyone's approval, I can turn it into a fiction novel."
"What kind of changes?" David asks.
"Well, the first and most obvious would be the ones that would lead back to us. Move the setting to a different location, or a more ambiguous one, give the characters that would be us different names, looks, maybe even personalities, you get the point. As for the things I don't know, such as what everyone saw the first time, hell, I barely know what I saw, I'll take some creative liberties and make some stuff up. It could make one hell of a novel, but I won't do it without anyone's permission. And obviously, I'll be open to collaboration with each of you guys when it comes to your characters, and I'll give you credit for the help." Elyse explains.
"You know what, I'm all for it. I mean if done right, no one will think it's not based on something real." Joe says.
"I've read some of her short stories. I trust her with this, too." Rachel adds.
"Fine with me." David adds.
"Go ahead." Randy adds.
"And you?" Elyse asks Nelson, who slowly nods in response. "Well, now that we have that, we should start getting ready to head out of here."
~A Few Years Later~
Years had passed since the group's secret project. Everyone had resumed their normal lives, focusing on their classes and graduating from University. Everyone still kept in touch, especially with Elyse's novel in the works. It had taken some time, but she was able to find a publisher who was interested in the story, working together to get it out. The novel's official release was scheduled to be in a few months, but an advanced copy was sent to Elyse, since she was the writer.
She was currently working on some concepts for a new novel when she heard a knock at the door. She answered to find a package at the doorstep, and when she opened it, she saw the advanced copy of her novel, We are the Flatliners.
"Nelson, it's here." She says, bringing the book into her office.
"Let's see it." He says, walking in. Elyse handed him the copy, and he opened it, reading the inside description aloud. "Are you afraid to die? Ethan Kennedy isn't. He's an ambitious, charismatic medical student who persuades classmates Robyn Bradley and Trevor Jackson to take part in a reckless experiment. To see if there is life after death, they will kill themselves: temporarily shut down their heart and brain functions to briefly experience clinical death. But what happens when Ethan and his friends find more than they planned for?" He then looks at Elyse "I gotta say, you really outdid yourself with this."
"Keep going." She says, "at least read the dedication."
Nelson laughs as he flips to that page, reading it "To my friends Rachel, David, Randy, and Joe for helping me give life to this cast of characters. And to my husband Nelson, my biggest supporter." He closes the book and sets it down before he pulls Elyse close to him "Did I ever tell you how much I love you?"
"You might have, but I won't object to you saying it again." She responds, kissing him.
"God, I love you Elyse Wright." He says, kissing back.
"Love you, too. Now, what do you say we find a new story to tell?" Elyse offers.
"I'd say that's a fantastic idea."
