Chapter 10: How the Hell Do We Get Out of This?
After the night's revelations, the rest of the group decided to split off for the night. Elyse walked in silence back to her place, pausing by the route where she could go check on Nelson. She shook her head in disappointment, but started to head in that direction until she saw Jill.
"No." Elyse says, "No, I am not doing this again." She turns and runs back to her house, locking the door the second she's in. She takes a second to catch her breath before writing everything down. Once she was done with that, she called it a night.
The next day, she got up and got ready as usual, before heading out. She walked into class and took notes as usual, but the whole time, it felt like the hours were slowly crawling by. Eventually, the classes were over, and she headed out. She didn't work that day, so she used the spare time to go back home and do some homework. Hours had passed, and night had fallen when she heard a knock at her door. When she answered, she was surprised to see Randy and Joe.
"Hey, what are you guys doing here?" She asked.
"Just checking in." Randy says. "Have you been alright?"
"Still seeing Jill, but other than that, I guess." Elyse responds.
"Have you seen Nelson at all? He wasn't in class today." Joe asks.
"No, not since last night. Did something happen? Is Rachel okay, too?"
"According to David, she's fine. She did have a freak out in class." Randy says.
"Let's go check on her." Elyse says, getting her coat and heading out with Randy and Joe to Rachel's. When they got there, they were surprised to not see David's truck, so they waited. Eventually, David pulled in and got out of the truck, and Nelson was with him, looking more battered.
"Where the hell have you guys been?" Joe asks as Rachel walks out and joins the group.
Neither of the two respond as David walks over to Rachel.
"She freaked in class. We've been with her all day." Randy explains.
"How are you doing?" David asks her.
"I'm fine. Fine for somebody who keeps running into her father who's been dead for 20 years." Rachel responds. "'Death is beautiful.' What a bunch of crap." Her attention turns to Nelson as she continues. "How you doing, Nelson? You okay? Cause I'd like to thank you for the nightmare."
"Hey, you guys were so eager to jump on my coattails. Well, welcome aboard." He responds.
"You withheld information. That's the same as lying." Rachel accuses.
"Well, I'm sorry you're so upset." Nelson responds sarcastically.
"Nelson, do you think you're the only one who risked or lost a goddamn thing here?" Elyse asks angrily.
"I always felt that there was something profoundly unnatural about this whole thing." Randy adds.
"Shut up, Steckle. Talk about somebody who hasn't risked a goddamn thing." Joe interjects.
"Screw yourself." Randy counters.
"This is not gonna help, alright!" David yells, breaking up the fight, "We're all in this together."
"No, we're not." Rachel says, walking away.
"Rachel, wait." Elyse calls after her.
"Isn't she strong?" Nelson taunts, "So independent."
"At least when I get into trouble, I don't drag everybody down with me." Rachel says, turning and walking back to the group.
"Drag everybo- come on! What happened to you, huh? You get caught with your videotapes down?" Nelson responds, turning his first question to Joe, and then to David. "And you. You swore at a little girl at a playground. Aww!" He then looks to the girls "And you two are having bad dreams about your daddy and sister. I'm really sorry."
Before he could continue any further, Elyse stepped forward, surprising everyone when she slapped him hard across the face.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" She asks angrily as tears start to form in her eyes. "This is not a joke, Nelson. This is serious shit! We messed with something beyond our comprehension, and now we're paying for it. Who's to say that price won't escalate to our lives?"
The rest of the guys didn't know what to say in response to this outburst, and Rachel, who also had things she wanted to say, decided to walk away, and Elyse decided to go with her.
"Come on, they're your sins. Live with them. I do." Nelson continues. He then starts to chase after the girls and stops Elyse, turning her to face him. "You ladies want to see death? Take a good look. It is beautiful."
"Let go of me." Elyse says, "I'm too angry to talk to you right now, and you need to get your act together."
The rest of the guys also stepped in pulling him away as the girls went back to walking away.
"You've already hurt yourself. You want to hurt them, too?" David asks. "Is that what you want? Your own girlfriend?" He then told Randy and Joe to help him look for Billy while he followed the girls. "Hey, wait a goddamn minute!" He says, catching up to them, "You're always running away from me." He adds, talking more to Rachel.
There was no immediate response as the trio walked back to David's. Elyse, not wanting to be too much of a third wheel, found a room to be by herself while David and Rachel talked. That talk later turned into something else, and during that, Jill appeared again to Elyse.
"Just stop being vague and tell me what it is you want." Elyse says, tired and frustrated. "What did I do to piss you off?"
"You didn't." Jill responds. "I'm not here because I'm mad at you. I've been trying to warn you."
"Warn me about what?" Elyse asks
"About that boyfriend of yours. This whole thing, what it's doing to him."
"Yeah, it's turned him into a complete jerk."
"It could get worse if you don't help him."
"I wouldn't know how."
"Just start by promising me this: you two look after each other when you sort this all out. And stop blaming yourself for what happened. You didn't know."
"But if I did, then that intruder might not have found you."
"Or you would have wound up just like me. It's not your fault, got it?"
"Got it."
"Good. You take care now, alright?"
"You too."
And just like that, Jill was gone. Elyse let out a sigh of relief, taking a short nap that was interrupted by David heading out. She didn't have time to ask him what was up, so she went to ask Rachel instead.
"Did something happen? I just saw that David left." She asks.
"He said Randy and Joe needed a ride. I guess Nelson freaked out on them and took Joe's car."
"Geez, what is wrong with him? I swear, if this keeps up and he doesn't get his act together, I'm breaking up with him." Elyse says.
"I wouldn't blame you." Rachel responds, "Has your sister tried to show up again?"
"Yeah, a while ago. We just talked. Sounds like she was just trying to look out for me."
Rachel nods. "That's good. I'll be back in a sec, I just need to.." she points in the direction of the bathroom.
Elyse nodded in response and waited for a moment for Rachel to return. Right as she stepped back out, the phone rang, and Elyse answered.
"Hello?" She asked.
"El, it's me. It's Nelson."
"Nelson? Where are you? The guys are out looking for you."
"Elyse, I wanted to say I was sorry. For bringing you into this, and being a shitty boyfriend. Tell the others I'm sorry for ever getting any of you involved in this."
"Why not tell them yourself? We're gonna work things out, I know it. We can fix it. We may have screwed some things up, but that doesn't matter anymore."
Nelson laughed weakly on the other end.
"Elyse, everything matters. Everything we do matters. That's why I'm going under again."
"Wait a second, what? No hold on." Elyse responds.
"I love you, Elyse Harmon. Goodbye."
"Nelson, where are you? I'm going to find you."
"I really am sorry."
"Please don't do this." There was no response, just the sound of the line disconnecting. Panicked, Elyse put the phone back and put her coat on. "Rachel, get dressed. We gotta go now!"
"What's wrong?" Rachel asked.
"It's Nelson. I'll explain on the way, but we have to hurry!"
