Chapter 1: In Which They Get Stuck in an Elevator
10:28
I walked into the elevator hesitantly, eying the inside of the metal box. I hadn't ever been in my new high school's elevator before, and I still wasn't entirely sure I could be in there, but what the hell. I was late for class, and no way would I be going down the crowded stairwell.
I turned around to the panel and pressed the button for the 2nd floor. The doors were just about to slide shut when I heard a voice call, "Wait!", as a boy my age dove through the doors just in time.
"I thought I was going to miss that..." he muttered before turning to me, and I realized exactly who it was. Jordan Balthazar, the black haired boy who stole my best friend, Lizzy's, heart and ran away with it. We had never particularly liked each other before, but it was easy to deal with since we had gone to different middle schools. But now, we both went to the same high school, and even better, we both were part of the same after school program.
"Oh it's you, Angelica." He mumbled before turning back to face the elevator doors while fiddling with his bookbag. I did the same, fiddling with the hem of my blue sweater, thinking about all the homework I would have to do when I got home. Which absolutely sucked, because I had my three hour fencing lesson today too, meaning I wouldn't have a lot of time. I tapped my foot as I eyed the number on the panel go from 4 to 3, before suddenly, there was a shudder, and I felt the elevator slowly and loudly come to a stop. Nervousness shot through me, as I looked back at the panel and pressed the button for the second floor again. Jordan eyed the panel and slammed his fist against it. No reaction. "Fuck, I think we're stuck in here." he said, and I turned to him rolling my eyes.
"No, I just thought the elevator was taking a break!" I say. Despite my sarcasm, I still felt slightly panicked.
"Shut up Angelica," he grumbled, before he hit the panel again. I dropped my bookbag to the ground and started rummaging through it as Jordan now tried pressing all the buttons on the panel. I finally found my phone in my bag and took it out, hoping that I had service.
I went and immediately dialed 911, the first number that popped into my head. Jordan looked over at me.
"Is it working?" he asks, fixing his glasses as he reaches his hand towards his back pocket. I raise a finger at him for silence as I listen to the telephone ring at the other end. I bit my lip, hoping that someone would pick up.
"Hello, 911, what's your emergency?" I finally heard on the other end of the line. I breathed a sigh of relief.
" Hello, yeah, um I'm stuck in an elevator at my high school-uh Trinity High, with another student?" I say, waiting for the response on the other end of the line. Jordan stands still, listening to the phone call looking dead serious.
" Oh, ok, have you tried calling using the emergency phone?" the woman at the other end of the line asks. "It should have a direct line with the staff of the school." I nod biting my lip as I motion to Jordan.
"Try the phone!" I whisper, pressing the phone to my shoulder. He opens a little compartment in the panel and pulls out this tiny little emergency phone line. "Does it work?" I ask. He turns to me exasperated.
"Hold on, I still have to try it!" He examines it for a while before pressing a button and then holding it against his ear. I hold my breath, hoping that there's someone on the line. Jordan's expression is unwavering as he holds the phone line against his ear for a few seconds. "Hello?" He asks. "Hello?" He waits for a few more moments before slowly returning the phone to its compartment. He turns to me and shakes his head slowly. I sigh and put my own phone back to my ear.
"N-no it isn't working," I say "Will we be ok in here, are you sending help?" I ask, mind wandering to what would happen if I was stuck in here. I'd be missing AP US History yes, but what if something was really wrong with the elevator? What if the cable snapped and we plummeted to the ground? Jordan eyed me, chewing his nails.
"The important thing is to stay calm here miss," she replies. "You need to stay in the elevator, do not try to get out unless official personnel are there ok? Now I'm going to send some officers your way, you said you were at Tri-" Static filled the line and I checked my phone screen. I was at one bar. I pressed the phone back to my ear again.
"Hello?"
"He-" I hear, "are you the-"
"I'm here, I'm here, hello?" I say frantically. We were about to lose our only connection to the outside world.
"Trinity Hig-" she said, "Sending officers there no-" And then dead silence. I checked my phone again. The words 'no service' flashed on my screen and I curse under my breath. I slip the phone back into my pocket as Jordan looks at me slightly disappointed.
"No service?" he asks.
"Yeah."
"Typical cliche." He snorts, before reaching into his own back pocket and checking his phone. " Shit, I don't have service either." He mutters before slipping the phone back into his pocket and then sinking down to the floor.
"Well," he says raising an eyebrow at me, "I guess I'm stuck with you."
