Ch. 19 - Not Lying
< Chapter 19: Not Lying >
♥ Jamie's POV: ♥
—know how it... —ope she's ... —hink we should... —idea, what if... —orry him...
There were voices muffling all around me. My head felt stiff. Where am I? I want to go home.
"Ow.." I let out a soft breath, slowly opening my eyes. The voices abruptly stopped.
"Are you feeling okay?" Ryan was in front of me, his eyes looked a bit tired and he wore a worried expression.
"Wha—Where am I?" I rubbed my eyes and looked back at Ry, who gave me a forced smile.
"You're in the hospital," his voice was raspy. "It's like five in the morning."
I gave him a look of confusion. The hospital? No way..
Then I remembered. The ice rink. Hitting my head.
Which reminds me... It feels like someone's hitting my head repeatedly with a hammer.
"Ow.." I said again with a sigh.
"Your head hurts, doesn't it?" a new voice said. I looked up to see Phoebe wearing the same forced smile as Ryan was. "The doctor said you have a concussion but you should be fine once you rest up. He just wants to rerun some tests and you'll be out of here."
I bit my lip and looked down at my hands. "Why do I have to ruin everything?"
"You didn't ruin anything, Jamie," Hanna's voice filled the air. "We were talking about it. I accidentally crashed into you when we were going fast at the rink. I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you. I should've gotten hurt instead."
Hanna looked really upset. It didn't look like she'd been crying or anything, but she definitely seemed like she meant her apology.
"It's not your fault," I managed to say with a shaky voice. The pounding inside my head just won't stop.
"Yes it is."
"No it's not," I assured her. "You didn't mean to do it so it's okay, really."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course," I smiled at her.
Megan did some more explaining before she claimed that everyone was tired from waiting to see if I was alright or not, and that they want to go out and try to find something to eat.
"You guys should just go home," I said. "You've been here long enough."
"No way," Chaz shook his head. "We're not leaving you here."
"Yeah, we'll be right back. It won't take us long," Phoebe added.
I sighed. "I know I can't convince you guys, so okay. You all should get some sleep though."
"Don't worry," Ryan brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "If you need us, call us."
"Thanks," I nodded tiredly.
"I have to go to the bathroom so I'll meet you guys downstairs, okay?" Hanna said as the crew started to leave.
Chaz looked at her. "You okay? Want me to wait?"
"No, it's fine."
Everyone then left, and it was just the two of us now. Hanna slowly turned to me, wiping her left eye from what I thought was a tear.
"I really am sorry for what happened," she whispered, barely audible.
"I already told you, you're forgiven," I reassured her.
"Good," her voice was stronger now. "So we're cool?"
I nodded. "We're cool."
She forced out a small laugh and we were silent after that. She turned around to leave before stopping in her tracks and looking at me again.
"How is he?" she asked.
My eyebrow curved in confusion. "Huh?"
"Justin Bieber," she clarified. "How is he?"
So she finally comments about my fame.
"He's... good," I say with a pause.
"Cool. I bet he is," she puts her hands behind her back and slightly leans forward, "now that he's away from you."
Silence filled the air between us. I opened my mouth to say something, but decided against it. Did I hear her correctly? As I was second-guessing myself, Hanna spoke again.
"You think you just have it all, don't you?" I could see her whole demeanor change. Even her posture was different. She always stood as if she wanted to disrupt the things around her as less as possible, but here she was, standing in front of me like she was ready to conquer the world.
"I'm not buying this whole bullshit," she continued. "You should stop using your 'best friend' like that, Jamie. It's not nice."
"I'm sorry—what are you talking about?" I managed to speak up.
"I'm going to go join your friends now," she ignored my question. "Want us to get you anything?"
"Answer me," I demanded. What is going on? This isn't the Hanna from before.
"I guess not."
She walked towards the door, clutching the door knob with her right hand.
"Oh yeah, by the way..." she gave me an unethical grin. "I crashed into you on purpose."
My eyes widened.
What?
"Enjoy the headache."
And she was gone.
I sat there, dumbfounded. Did she only made it look like an accident? But why? What did I ever do to her?
I groaned at the continuous pain in my head before hearing a soft, muffled noise. It took me a few seconds to recognize it as a phone vibrating, and I immediately looked at the table to my left, finding that my bag had been placed there. I reached over to it and dug around for my phone. Just as the call was about to drop, I found it and tapped 'answer'.
"Hello?" I spoke quietly.
"Jamie?" Justin's voice instantly lifted my fretful mood and I could not be happier to hear his voice at this very moment. "Are you okay? W-What happened?"
He sounded extremely worried. The kind where his overprotective side comes out.
"I'm fine, Justin," I lied. "I'm just glad to hear your voice."
"No," he breathed, "don't do that. Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
"You are," he said. "Ryan's call woke me up a few seconds ago. He told me everything."
I sighed. "So you know I'm in the hospital?"
"Yes, baby." He paused. "Now explain how it happened."
"Did Ryan not tell you?" I looked out the hospital's window and saw how dark it was outside. Sure, a few stars were out but it was almost pitch black.
"He just thought I should know that you're in the hospital. So of course I need to call you and make sure you're okay."
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. "Did you hear Chaz got himself a girlfriend?"
"Jamie, don't change the subjec—"
"I'm not," I interrupted. "It's part of the explanation."
Justin sighed. "No, I didn't know that."
"Well he did. Her name's Hanna, and we all went ice skating as a way to meet her and stuff."
"And?"
"And it got a bit crazy, and we were all dancing, and I guess she bumped into me by accident, and I fell and bumped my head hard and I guess I passed out," I explained anxiously. There's no reason I should tell him more than that. He'd get too worried about me and distract himself from his work.
"That's it?" he asked.
"That's it."
"You're lying."
"No I'm not."
"Sometimes when you're nervous, you say 'and' a lot."
"And?"
"You just said it right now."
"I'm not lying, Justin." I tightened my grip on my phone.
"Whatever," he sighed. "Just get better, okay?"
"Okay."
"I love you."
"I know."
"Do you love me too?"
"Of course, doofus," I said, as if it was the most obvious thing that could exist in this world.
"I just wanted to hear you say it." I could just picture him grinning. "Alright, well... I'll check up on you tomorrow."
"Okay, now go get some sleep," I said softly.
After we hung up, I sat there and stared at the ceiling, feeling more and more guilty by the second.
Someone please tell me what I'm supposed to do...
