3: The Fruit

"Here, hold this." You handed a pomegranate to Hades, hoping to find your knife in the bottom of your basket.

As you dug through the layer of fruits to retrieve your tool, you heard a horrible sound emit from the god's mouth.

"Geugh! How do humans stand this flavor? I have not partaken in much of the human realm's food but I should think I wouldn't like to if it all tastes like this!"

You looked over at him, surprised that he had gotten the fruit out. Then you saw what he had done.

"You don't eat it like that!" Your light laughter rang out again, startling the embittered god. He had simply taken a bite out of it, like an apple. "Hand it to me."

Having found your knife, you took the cursed fruit from Hades' hand and began cutting it in half.

"You eat the small arils. See?" You cracked the pomegranate open, showcasing the beautiful fruit. Carefully, you plucked a single aril from the hard casing and held it out for Hades to take.

Hesitantly, he looked at you and back towards the offending piece of fruit.

"I shall be angry if it is not any tastier. You said that they were delicious and I do not like being lied to."

You rolled your eyes at him and ate the tiny aril.

"I personally find it delicious. It wouldn't be fair to be angry with me simply because we do not share the same taste." You pulled another piece of fruit out and handed it to him.

"Fair? How would it not be fair?" This time, he took the tiny food item and inspected it.

"Well it's just a matter of preference." You began as you reached over to the side of you. "For example, I really enjoy these flowers: tulips. Do you enjoy them?"

"I have no feelings about them." He stated as he continued looking at the aril.

"Oh, just eat it already." You were laughing at him now once again. "Do you feel angry at me for liking tulips?"

"No. I feel... happy to know such a thing." He was happy at the foreign sound coming from your throat. It was one of the most pleasant sounds he had heard in a long time. Perhaps he hadn't wanted to stay so long in the human realm and the clock was ticking, but he decided that it wasn't so bad... as long as he was around you. So he took the plunge and ate the aril. His face completely changed.

"Ah, see? You like it. Even if you hadn't though, then you would not have to be angry with me for having you try it. Perhaps try to change your perspective and be happy that I helped you learn something about yourself." You smiled at him once again. "You should take the rest of the fruit to the underworld. Then you'll have lots of fruits that you like!"

He sat quietly for a few minutes, thinking deeply and eating arils that you offered to him.

"Would you visit the underworld if I grew these... pom-er-granates there?" He asked quietly.

"Pom-e-granates. Perhaps I would, as long as I didn't have to stay! I have my family to take care of. Speaking of, I have to get these back home so we can sell them at the market!" You stood up abruptly, remembering your promise to be home quickly. Dusting off your clothes, you turned to smile one last time at the god of the underworld. "It was nice to meet you, Hades. Please, enjoy the pomegranate."

And then you ran off.
