The merboy

Sinking into the abyss.

The sweet, sweet darkness.

I've been so tired.

So, so tired.

I feel numbness starting at my fingertips, working its way up my arms, crawling over my chest until the pain is gone.

My eyes are closing... or are they already closed?

Fear jolts me awake. I'm dying. I'm going to go to sleep and never wake up, exist, or feel.

The darkness will swallow me, and it will be the end.

I struggle for air, but it's useless. Futile.

I claw at the water, desperately trying to find the surface.

My face bobs above the waves.
I capture a breath, then sink again.
Arms don't want to work anymore.
Tail feels like... I can't feel it.

Staring up at the crystal mirror of water between me and life, seeing the silvery moon and stars broken by ripples and bubbles as I lose precious oxygen... I know it's over.

"No, it's not."

What? Where did that voice come from? A silken hand lifts me up.

"Mother?"

"You could say that."

What is that supposed to mean?

"Shhh, I've got you. Go to sleep."

This time when I drift off, it feels right.

The girl

I sling my purse into the passenger's seat and close the door, walking around the front of the car.

Mum and Dad are standing there, holding it together. For me.

I hug them both, lingering in my Mum's arms the longest. "I'll be okay."

She sniffs, "I know. You're a big girl now."

"You've grown up so fast, mo stór." Says Dad, "Take care."

I hug them again, then climb in the car. I roll down my window. "Love you," I say, turning the ignition and pulling out into the street.

"We love you too!" Mum waves, "Be safe!"

I drive off towards my future.
