He still couldn't see it. The emptiness he felt inside lingered.

Everyone had string, not that you could see it. Awsten couldn't see his. He thought he would be able to see it but he couldn't. He tried so hard and he thought he had found him... but he hadn't.

The blonde in front of Awsten moved on towards another boy. "Awsten!" He looked up and spotted his friend Otto waving at him. Behind Otto, his girlfriend Grace followed behind. They could see their string, they had found each other.

Awsten couldn't lie to himself; yes, he was jealous of what they had. Everyone had someone, everyone was connected to someone, they just had to find them.

"You shouldn't be looking. We've talked about this, it will just make it worse." Otto said, noticing Awsten staring at the blonde man. Awsten sighed. He knew that but he couldn't help it.

"What if I never find them?" Awsten asked longingly, Otto placed his hand on his friend's shoulder. "You will. You know that if they get hurt or die you'll feel it. You haven't felt anything yet have you?"

Awsten shook his head. "No. I haven't felt anything. Well, I haven't felt anything other than loneliness."

"It's ok Aws, you'll find them. Trust me and when you do you'll know. I mean, you'll see it as well but you will know." Grace said, gazing at Otto lovingly. Awsten felt a pang in his chest. He wanted that.

"What colour is it, the string?" Awsten asked. Otto lifted up his hand, looking at his index finger fondly. "It's pink, like a baby pink though. It makes me feel happy and warm inside, just like Grace does."

"How did you find each other?" Awsten had heard this story hundreds of times, Otto told him it nearly everyday.

"We didn't! I just walked out of the house and there she was, moving in next door. I felt my hand grow heavy and when I looked down I saw it. It was tied around my finger and floating along over the hedge to their house. It's not heavy anymore, I'm used to it now though I guess." Otto told him, again, as excited and energetic as the first time.

"Sounds magical." The blue haired boy murmered wistfully, watching them both with such intensity.

"It was. But what's more magical is that school's starting and it's time for form session. Come on." Awsten and Otto had to wait for Grace to stand up before the three embarked on their journey back inside.

Through the sea of people they found their classroom and took their seats. Everyone except Awsten and Jawn had their partner next to them. They were the two sat alone.

Their tutor stood at the front, calling out names. Everyone knew his story. His string was cut and removed when his wife died.

They removed it to spare people the pain but if your lifeline died, then a part of you died. Everyone had one lifeline, one string and if something happened to that person, you would never find another. There never was another.

Mr Wigington constantly looked tired and worn down, he always had a pained expression upon his face. Losing your soul mate meant you lost yourself.

"Is it just me or does he look sad?" Otto asked Awsten. "He always looks like that, genius." Awsten replied. "She died two years ago." Grace said. "Oh. Why is he in today?"

Grace shrugged. "Don't know. Maybe they couldn't find a replacement."

"How can they not find a replacement?" Jawn asked loudly from behind Awsten. "There's loads of people and this is the one time you're actually asked to take time off."

Awsten thought about it. Jawn was right, it was definitely unusual.

"Excuse me class." The noise died down as everyone turned to pay attention. "I am delighted to announce that we have a new student joining us today. I would like to introduce Geoff to the class and I hope you all give him a very warm welcome." Mr Wigington's normally dull tone had a hint of happiness as he spoke.

"Is it just me or do they look similar?" Otto murmered but Awsten couldn't respond. His arm was aching and heavy, almost dragging him to the floor.

"Aws are you Ok?" Grace noticed her friend looking confused. Awsten looked up at the brunette and gasped as some kind of feeling shot through his chest and down his arm to his tingling fingers. Geoff's sky blue eyes met Awsten's, the same feeling running through him.

They both looked down and saw a thin line connected to their finger. It was blue, sky blue. Geoff backed away cautiously and Awsten felt the string tug as he moved away.

Their eyes connected once more. Awsten stood up, lifting his left hand. Geoff lifted his right hand, taking a few steps forwards as did Awsten. As they got closer the string got shorter until their fingers intertwined.

"I've found you," Awsten whispered happily, "It's you." Geoff nodded slowly in response.

A warm feeling spread through Geoff, along the string and into Awsten until they were both warm. Geoff heard sniffling from behind him and turned to see tears in his father's eyes.

"Do it." Mr Wigington told him. Geoff nodded. Hands still clasped together, the young lovers exited the room and into the corridor.

Geoff placed his left hand on Awsten's face and smiled. "This is crazy. I've seen your face every night but never remembered it. Seeing you just now brings back everything."

"Geoff...your eyes. I remember them. I know them."

"Awsten." Geoff breathed. He knew his name, he heard it in music, he heard it in the wind. He knew Awsten.

Gently caressing Awsten's face, Geoff leant down, bringing their lips together. Soon the familiar emptiness he once felt melted away. Awsten pressed his body against Geoff's revelling in the warmth of his touch.

"I love you." Geoff spoke against Awsten's lips. "I love you too." The sky blue haired boy buried his face into the crook of Geoff's neck.

"We should go back inside." Geoff told him reluctantly. "No. Let's stay out here. We have no reason to go back. Now I've found you, I never want let you go."

"You can't get rid of me now Aws, you're stuck with me." Geoff said, lifting their still interlocked hands.

"I wouldn't have it any other way." Awsten with his blue hair looked at the blue string then gazed into Geoff's blue eyes.

Blue. Blue is the warmest colour.
