Happiness is hard to fake, smiles aren't

This may make you sad, it made me sad. Tw: suicide, homophobic slurs and strong language.

It was a hot day. What do you need on hot days? Water. What don't you need on a hot day? Dickheads with waterbombs pelting them at you.

Unfortunately Patty thought that was what people needed so he arrived at school with a bag full, ready to throw them at unwilling victims.

Geoff Wigington was one of these targets. The quiet, reserved boy was an easy target and was usually one of Patty's favourites to abuse. Luckily for Geoff, Patty wouldn't do anything to hurt him or upset him when Awsten Knight was around.

Patty knew he could never have Awsten as Geoff held his heart, even though he didn't know it, but he took his anger out on the brunette when Awsten wasn't around anyway. Wednesday was one of those days.

"Hey Wigington, need to cool down?" The blonde cackled and threw a water filled balloon at the boy, soaking him from head to toe.

Disgruntled and damp, Geoff squelched down to Awsten's house and waited in the garden under the sun to dry off.

"Gee? What are you doing?" Awsten stuck his head out his bedroom window and looked down at his best friend.

"Drying off. I had a run in with Patty."

"Do you want me to speak to him?" Awsten hated seeing Geoff go through this. He really liked Geoff but he was way to scared to tell him so he settled for just friends.

"No it's ok, I'm washable and dryable so I'm all good." Geoff smiled up at him. He really didn't mind things like this, even though it was annoying, because it gained more attention from Awsten which he definitely wasn't opposed to.

"Ok well I'll come down with towels to speed up the process." Then his blue head disappeared and the window shut. Geoff basked in the sunlight and the heat until his friend reappeared but this time laden with towels and...

"Is that a hairdryer?" Geoff asked. Awsten nodded. "Yup, got an extension cable too and a new shirt." Awsten plopped everything down next to Geoff.

"Shirt off." Geoff blushed. "I'll hold a towel up if it makes you feel more comfortable." Geoff nodded and waited until Awsten unfolded and held out a fluffy white towel.

The brunette peeled off his wet shirt and quickly switched it for the one Awsten brought out. It smelt like Awsten and Geoff forgot about all the shit he'd been through.

"Thanks Aws." He took the towel from Awsten and dried off his arms then stuck his legs out in front of him. Awsten plugged in the hairdryer and switched it on. Then he hovered it above Geoff's legs making him squirm and laugh.

"Aws that tickles!" He squealed. Awsten laughed and turned the speed up, making Geoff wriggle even more. Eventually Geoff told Awsten he was warm and dry so the hairdryer was switched off and put away.

"Do you wanna come inside? I can put the Office on." Both Geoff and Awsten adored the show and bingewatched it whenever they could but Geoff declined.

"As nice as that sounds it's really warm out here, why don't you like next to me and we can sunbathe."

"Dude you know I burn easily. I'll toast!" Awsten exclaimed. "How about we stay out here until you feel like you'll combust and then we'll go in? Sound like a plan?" Geoff would happily compromise any plans so it suited Awsten. He wasn't so bothered about the sun, he just wanted to spend quality time with the blue boy and not be distracted by a screen.

Awsten wanted to do whatever Geoff wanted and when he made these deals to make it easier for him, he just fell in love with the brunette even more.

"Sure. I can spare a limb or two." Awsten joined Geoff on the grass and revelled in the warmth. Clouds meandered across the blue and the warm air was disrupted by Awsten randomly shouting things he claimed he could see in them.

"As nice as this is Gee, I think I'm dying of heatstroke. Can we go inside and cuddle on the couch?" Awsten always made it sounds so innocent to hide the fact he just wanted to be close to Geoff and have that intimacy he so desperatley craved.

And so Geoff agreed, he never admitted it to anyone but himself that he would walk through fire and go through Hell just to have one second with Awsten.

The two friends walked towards the house, side by side, ocasionally their hands would brush and both boys would blush.

Their evening consisted of The Office, guitar practice and sleeping. The perfect way to end a slightly less than perfect day. Although any day could be made perfect as long as those two were together.

The next morning Awsten woke up sick. He rushed into the bathroom and leant over the toilet, puking violently. Geoff awoke to the sound of wretching. Concerned he wandered into the bathroom and saw the blue haired boy leaning against the porcelain bowl.

Geoff dropped down beside him and rubbed small circles on his back. "Do you want me to take the day off with you?" Awsten shook his head. "No, you need to go. I'll still be here when you get back."

"I'll hold you to that." Geoff said, pressing a soft kiss to Awsten's forehead. It was an innocent gesture and one they had shown to each other since they were small, one that meant they cared and that they were going to be ok.

"Come on, where's that smile?" Geoff asked, lifting Awsten's chin up. He was rewarded with a weak smile but a smile nonetheless. "Perfect." He whispered.

-

Awsten picked up his phone from beside him after he heard that familiar ping. The picture he had recently posted of him and Geoff, one that he had taken that night with the caption "we didn't get much sleep but hey for what it's worth, I think this amazing dickhead saved my life", had been commented on.

Hey faggot why are you still here? Why haven't you just fucking killed yourself yet you worthless cock sucking shits?

Look at the pathetic pussy he thinks he's so tough but he ain't got nothing. Just end it all you waste of space.

Die.

You look like a Wal-Mart Gerard Way. Pathetic poser.

The words were embedded into Awsten's brain, wiggling their way in and poisoning his thoughts. The problem with hate comments is that it doesn't matter if they've been removed or if the person's been blocked or reported because it's still there. It is always there.

Awsten looked at the picture of him and Geoff, their smiles wide and their eyes full of happiness. Whenever Awsten was with Geoff he felt happy and didn't have to fake it. That picture was a reminder that some smiles are real but can easily be faked. That one wasn't but most were.

Awsten Knight wasn't happy and he had the scars to prove it.

What's a few more scars on skin littered with them? What's a bit more blood lost from a body full of it? What's one more light gone from a sky full of stars? What's one more life gone from a world full of them?

Geoff, I love you. I'm so sorry.

These were the last thoughts Awsten Constantine Knight would ever think.

-

Throughout the day all Geoff could think of was Awsten and how much the small boy meant to him. "Hey faggot you off to your boyfriend?" Patty called out to him. Geoff was just about to exit the gates when Patty and his boys stopped him.

Geoff had thought about Awsten as his boyfriend before and how he wanted it to be real and just to spite Patty he decided to be brave and actually do something about it.

"Yeah I am and there's nothing you can do about it!" With that the brunette pushed past the boys and ran all the way to Awsten's house.

He ran up the stairs and pushed open his bedroom door. What he saw was not what he expected. A pool of blood surrounded Awsten's frail body. His lips were chapped and faded, his cheeks had no colour and his skin was cold to the touch.

"Awsten." Geoff breathed. The brunette fell to his knees beside his friend, tears falling onto Awsten's face. Shakily Geoff pressed his lips to Awsten's deathly pale forehead. "It's ok Aws, I'm here. It's going to be ok."

The brunette pulled Awsten into his arms, ignoring the blood seeping into his clothes. All he tried to do was keep Awsten warm. "With this kiss may my oxygen fill your lungs." Geoff pressed his lips to Awsten's with no response.

"Please Awsten. Wake up for me." But he never did.

"Where's that smile?" Geoff asked, laughing through his tears. "I know I never told you this because I never had the chance. It's a bit late to tell you now but in the hope you can somehow hear me then you deserve to know." Geoff kisses Awsten one last time and whispered three words against his lips.

"I love you."

I can only apologise but I feel like this was one of my better one shots.
