A scent that lingers
On a cool summer's day it smelled fruity. It smelt like mangos. It had been bugging him for around about three weeks.
No matter how much he tried to ignore it, the scent would not leave his mind. Everytime he inhaled there it was.
It was starting to distract him and his brain couldn't handle everyday life and this constant scent.
Geoff's friends had noticed a change in his behaviour. Something seemed off about him.
"Dude are you ok?" Otto asked. His fiancée sat down beside him and interlaced her fingers through his. Both their eyes glowed neon pink before settling down to a sweet baby pink.
Geoff ran a shaky hand through his hair and sighed. "Yeah I'm fine. It's just...there's this mango smell that won't go away. It's like it's permanently lodged into my brain."
Seeing as though the taller brunette was staring at the graffitied McDonald's table, he missed the knowing look shared between Otto and Grace.
Grace released Otto's hand, their eyes returned to their natural colour, and stood up gesturing to Geoff that he should do the same.
Confused, he followed her instructions. They both walked out of the restaurant with Otto running along after them.
"Grace where are we going?" Geoff asked as she led them out of the village. "I don't know, you tell me." She replied, stopping abruptly in the street. Otto ground to a halt behind them, breathing heavily.
"What are you on?" Geoff asked.
"Dude you're the only one who knows where to go. Follow your nose. It will lead you to mystery mango." Grace said as put quotation marks around her words with her long slender fingers.
"Mystery mango?" Geoff repeated. By now Otto had caught his breath and was nodding along with Grace.
"Wait you're agreeing with her? Otto are you serious?"
"Deadly. Just shut up and walk." Otto told him, lifting his hand to gesture in front of them before dropping it back down.
"Are you not coming with me? What if the mangos lead me to a river? I could die!" Geoff knew he was over thinking and really digging deep for excuses.
"Shut up Geoff." Both Grace and Otto said simultaneously. Otto laced his fingers through Grace's and they both waved goodbye, pink eyes aglow.
Internally sighing, Geoff turned away from the pair and wandered down the street. Letting his nose guide him, the brunette ended up at the entrance of the park.
Geoff knew this park. He had grown up with this park. Everyday after school he would run down with Jawn and Otto. It's where Otto found his angel. He found Grace.
The older brunette had seen many people find their angels. He hoped one day to find his.
Geoff knew this place like the back of his hand and was so cocky and confident that he walked around with his eyes squeezed tightly shut.
Unfortunately he didn't take into account the other people that would be around him. Case in point being the smaller, bright colour haired boy standing deep in thought behind him.
He didn't see Geoff back into him. He didn't see anything. Only felt it. Their bodies collided and a cascade of apologies fell from Geoff's lips.
The blue boy in question merely smiled at a tree, not facing the direction Geoff was in. Frowning, Geoff moved around in front of the beautiful stranger.
"Uh, hi. I'm Geoff. Sorry I walked into you." He laughed nervously and extended his hand, expecting the boy to take it. He didn't.
It wasn't until Geoff properly inspected the boy that he dropped his hand loosely to his side. The boy had tinted glasses covering his glassy eyes and a cane was gripped tightly in his. He was blind.
"Hello I'm Awsten. It's ok, I'm not hurt. Are you?" Even though Awsten didn't know Geoff, the concern he had for him was rather touching. Geoff felt bad for walking into him. "So yeah, sorry dude. Were you headed somewhere?"
"Uh yeah, I was planning on going to the riverbank but my friend abandoned me and I have really bad anxiety. I don't wanna fall in." Awsten giggled nervously, running his fingers through his floppy fringe.
"Hey, crazy idea alert," Geoff said. "I could escort you and sit with you if you're ok with that?" The brunette suggested.
Awsten's face broke into a smile and he looked up to where he detected Geoff's melodic voice was coming from. "That would be really nice." The pastel boy smiled shyly.
He felt a rough and large hand slip into his smaller and more dainty palm. Geoff's grip wasn't too tight; it was reassuring and comforting. Awsten felt like he could trust this apologetic and seemingly kind boy.
Hand in hand the two boys, guided by Geoff, made their way towards the sound of calm water sloshing against rocks and flowing over fish.
On the dry grass Geoff and Awsten sat side by side, basking in the warmth. "I've always wanted to be able to see the river. I wanna see the different colours mingle together and the different shades in the leaves of the trees." Awsten sighed, leaning back on his hands.
Geoff looked over at him and his face fell. He didn't want Awsten to feel sad. He wanted to be the one to show Awsten the world.
"I have exams soon and I'm thinking of getting laser eye surgery. I'm terrified if I'm completely honest but it will be worth it right? I mean," Awsten tentatively tucked a stray piece of hair behind his ear. "I've always wanted to see colour."
The smaller boy drew his legs up to his chest and rested his face on his knees. Cautiously Geoff reached out his hand and rested it on Awsten's.
Subconsciously Awsten leant into Geoff's touch. The brunette wrapped his arms around the smaller boy, forcing him out of his previous position and into Geoff's embrace.
Awsten closed his eyes and snuggled into Geoff's warm chest. "I believe in you." The brunette whispered, softly kissing the top of the blue boys head.
A soft breath slipped out of the youngers mouth as a warm fuzzy feeling filled his body. It tingled behind his eyes and spread across his face. When his eyelids fluttered open he looked up. He really looked up.
Brown hair, blue eyes and slightly parted lips. Awsten saw it all. He saw the turquoise mix with a crystal blue as the clear water ran past them.
He saw the dark green grow next to the emerald. He saw the coral blossoms bloom on caramel brown branches.
Awsten saw Geoff. His shaking hand reached up to caress Geoff's face. "My angel." He whispered. Tears formed in both boys eyes for different yet the same reasons.
Clear water flowed down their faces as their soft, crimson lips crashed together. They tasted each other, heard each other, saw each other and loved each other under the sun covered by a shroud of green leaves.
Even though it had been two years, Geoff knew he would never find another. He never could. Awsten was the only one.
But Geoff knew he was never alone because whenever he smelt the beautiful mango fragrance, his blue boy was always right there beside him; his eyes sparkled and his smile was wide.
Awsten was there forever, guiding Geoff through some of his hardest times with the smell of mangos.
Geoff stood up, turning away from the newly engraved stone.
Awsten Constantine Knight
Loved forever, never forgotten, always in our hearts.
Beloved son, brother, boyfriend and soul mate.
Wasted tears fell to the ground, enriching the dirt with sadness, loss and despair. As the brunette trudged away slowly, a lone piece of paper fluttered down to rest on the grass. The last words ever written to Awsten Constantine Knight.
Thinking back on the days when we all used to say
"I know anywhere's better than here"
In the back of the class, where we grew up too fast
Living life like there's nothing to fear
But the ice on the road, driving home all alone
Singing along to a song from three summers ago
The one that made you remember it
Now I'll always remember it
As the song that your life ended with
If a picture is all that I have
I can picture the times that we won't get back
If I picture it now it don't seem so bad
Either way, I still wish you were here
Don't say everything's meant to be
Cause you know it's not what I believe
Can't help but think that it should've been me
Either way I still wish you were here
And they say you're in a better place, but a better place is right here with me
Yeah, they say you're in a better place, too bad it's not what I believe.
