Chapter Thirty-Four
When I came back round, I was laying on a couch. Taking in my surroundings, I saw Damon pacing up and down what looked like some sort of staff room. “Damon” I called, he hung up on who ever he was talking to and came running over to me.” Hey, are you all right? You frightened the life out of me, what happened?” Damon went into overdrive. Placing my hands on either his face I pulled his face lower towards mine and kissed him. Knowing this would shut him up as well as calm him down.
As I broke from the kiss I giggled, “Is that better?” I asked, he gave me one of his heart melting smiles. “Hmm, much” he replied a little dazed. “Well now to answer all of your questions. Yes I’m fine and I’m sorry I frightened you.” Then I paused, as I tried to work out how to tell him what I saw, no I mean who I saw. “Damon …I don’t really know how to say this, so I am just going to tell you how I think it is”. He gave me a confused look; I knew I wasn’t explaining this right. However, I am not sure what I saw myself, as in reality there is no way I could of seen her as she is dead, I thought to myself. “Sheena please just tell me,” Damon asked. “…I…saw….mymum” I rushed out the last bit, knowing he is probably, going to think that I have finally snapped. God, right this minute, I’m even starting to think I have.
Before Damon had a chance to respond, two paramedics entered the room. “Hello, I see your awake” one of the paramedics said, I tore my eyes away from a very confused looking Damon, so I could answer. ”Yes I’m fine thank you, I think it was just because I haven’t eating yet today,” I explained. He nodded, “well let’s just take a quick look at you, just to make sure ok?” he asked, “ok” I replied. A few minutes later, I was free to go, but not before receiving a full-blown lecture about eating. Once I had promised them that I would make sure to eat more regular, they left the room. Then what looked to me as the manager of the store, came in to make sure I was all right, bless him, he looked so worried. Nevertheless, once I had reassured him that I was ok, he left the room.
Damon then helped me up and took me out to the car. We never said a word the whole way, but I could see Damon had his thinking face on. As soon as I was strapped in, I could feel Damon starring out me. “I know it sounds crazy Damon, god even I am starting to think I have gone mad. But I saw her Damon, it was her Damon, it was my mother.” I said while staring at him. He sat staring at me for a couple more minutes, making me more paranoid then I was already feeling. “Was she a ghost,” he then asked looking confused, I wanted to laugh at his question, but hell I wasn’t even sure if she was or wasn’t. Nevertheless, if she were dead like we were informed, then she would have to be a ghost, no? I asked myself. “Damon, I really don’t know, all I do know for certain, is that I seen her.” I replied. We sat there in silence for a few more minutes before Damon decided to start up the car. “I believe you Sheena, I’m just confused that’s all,” he said as he pulled out of the parking lot.
I must have fallen asleep on our way home; as I had just waked up in Damon’s arms, he was carrying me into the house. “Ah missy sleepy head has arisen,” he said while laughing. Oh, thank god, he is back to my Damon, I thought to myself. “I could get used to waking up like this,” I said, trying to keep the spirits high. “Let’s get you fed,” he said as he carried me into the kitchen. Placing me at the breakfast bar he gave me a quick kiss before he ran back out to the car to get the rest of the shopping. Sitting there alone got me thinking, say if my mother and brother never were killed, and they are out them somewhere alive. Then why didn’t they come looking for me, why did they leave me out there all alone. I seemed to be just going around in circles, as I kept questioning everything in my head.
“Hey Sheena don’t cry baby,” Damon said in a soothing but concerned voice, tearing me away from my thoughts. Being so deep within my own thoughts, I did not even realise that I was crying. I gave him a smile as he wrapped me in his arms. “I’m fine Damon, I didn’t even realise I was crying seriously. I was just thinking that’s all” I replied giving him a smile. Giving me one last squeeze he started to unpack our shopping, as well as making us both breakfast. I sat and watched him as he moved so graciously around the kitchen.
After breakfast, we started to unpack some of the boxes. We laughed and talked while we unpacked; it was so funny hearing some of Damon’s childhood stories. I told him some, from when I was part of a happy family, and about my old so-called friends. Which Damon took pleasure in laughing at me.
Deciding to take a break, we sat out on the porch swing. As I sat there, I could not believe that this was all ours, placing my hand over my stomach I began to think how lovely this place will be for our baby. The garden was massive; It had one side cut off where the garages and tool sheds were. There was even a little vegetable patch, which I took a mental note to get some seeds to plant. “It’s so nice out here, our baby is going to have so much fun out here,” Damon said, his eyes sparkling. “I was just thinking the same thing,” I told him.
“Sheena, I’ve been thinking, how about we take a look into your mothers and brothers deaths?” he asked “but not today.” He added quickly. “I would love that Damon, but I have been thinking as well, what if it was my mother that had attacked us?” I said honestly, as that has crossed my mind, so many times today. “I know what your saying, but I don’t think it was. Listen we will just look in to it ok and for now we will just keep our eyes opened, as we haven’t really got much to go on at the moment.” he replied. “That sounds perfect” I replied feeling a little relieved.
Later that evening, I started making dinner, while Damon went to cleaned him self-up. I slotted my ipod into the docking station and selected random. After placing the chicken in the oven, I began chopping up all the vegetables while dancing to the music. I started singing along to call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepson, when I felt warm loving arms wrap around my waist. “Hmm you look sexy dancing, but I’m not to sure about the singing,” he said while laughing, “Hey” I replied while giving him a playful slap. I felt so embarrassed, I could feel my cheeks burning, I was probably as red as a tomato right now, I thought to myself. Damon then spun me around; I left out a gasp as he held my hand. Then he started singing and dancing, I was nearly wetting myself laughing. He kept twirling me around while still attempting to sing, even though he didn’t know the words. However, he did know the chorus that he sung completely out of tune. He was making me laugh so hard I had to hold my sides. “Damon, please no more, I can’t laugh no more my stomach hurts,” I pleaded him, laughing.
Soon as the song ended, I eventually stopped laughing and continued getting dinner ready, while Damon was setting the table. I pored a glass of wine for Damon and a glass of Orange juice for myself. We sat down in the lounge while we waited for dinner to cook. We snuggled up close together, watching some soap that was on the telly. I couldn’t help but smile, as I felt so happy and content. As the house was, perfect and it had such a warm and homely feeling to it, unlike our old house.
Hearing the cooker bleeping, I got up and went into the kitchen. Our first home cooked meal was amazing. As soon as we finished our dinner, we decided to have an early night. I was just finishing loading the last of the dishes into the dishwasher when the outside security lights came on. “Damon” I screamed up the stairs, I could hear his footsteps running down the stairs. My heart was pounding in my chest, Oh god please no, please” I started to chant to myself. As soon as Damon reached the kitchen, I pointed towards the light. Without hesitating, he pulled open the draw where he kept his spare gun and headed towards the back door. “Sheena lock the door the minute I’m out ok?” I stood there frozen, as I thought what if it is my mother. “Sheena”,”yes I will” I replied following right behind him. As he stepped clear of the door, I slammed it shut behind him making sure I locked it.
With my back resting against the door, I slid my body down on to the hard cold, tiled floor. I kept my eyes squeezed tightly shut, as I waited to hear Damon’s gun going off. “Why can’t we ever be left alone, why?” I screamed aloud, in fear and frustration. A loud knocking on the back door had me leaping back up onto my feet. It was like my heart was in my mouth.
Looking through the glass in the back door, to my relief I saw Damon standing there. I opened the door and by the look on his face, I could tell it was nothing serious. My heart began to slow down to a more normal rhythm, “Damon who was it?” I asked, I could still hear the panic in my own voice. “It was just a rabbit” he replied. “I will turn, the sensor down a little first thing in the morning,” he said while giving me a quick hug and kiss. “Thank god, let’s go to bed,” I told him, as I entwined my fingers with his and led us both up to bed.
The next morning, I woke up to an empty bed. Taking a quick look at the alarm clock, I noticed it was nearly noon already. Wow, I must have needed more sleep than I realised, I thought to myself as I climbed out of bed. Throwing on an old pair of tracks bottoms and a t-shirt I made my way down the stairs. “Morning princess” I heard the minute I entered the kitchen. “Morning my prince” I replied while giggling. “I’m just cooking lunch do you want some or do you want breakfast?” he asked jokingly. “Mmm, what ever you’re having smells delicious, so I’ll some of what ever you’re cooking please” I replied, just as my stomach started to rumble. “Damon, did you manage to sort the sensor out this morning?” I asked. His paled as if he had seen a ghost, feeling the hairs on my neck rise gave me that stupid bad feeling back. “Yes all done” he replied, as he tried to cover up whatever it was. Doesn’t he realise that I can see through all his cover-ups, damn what the hell did he find? I asked myself. I decided to just ask him and get it over with. ”Damon” I said sternly. He gave me a guilty look, “I wasn’t trying to keep it from you, its just I don’t think its anything to worry about,” he replied, almost winning me over. However, the look in his eyes gave him away. “Oh Damon please stop trying to cover what ever it is up and just tell me the truth” I said flatly. “Well I did find a couple of foot prints in the veggie patch but they could have been from the previous owners,” he answered, and truthfully this time.
I thought back to yesterday, when I was looking at the vegetable patch. However, I could not remember whether I seen footprints or not, “damn, why didn’t I pay more attention to that,” I started to scold myself. Not realising, I was saying my thoughts aloud Damon stopped me. “Sheena you are not some police woman nor are you an investigator, so please stop scolding yourself for something you shouldn’t be doing in the first place” he told me sternly. “I know Damon, but ever since I seen my mother yesterday I feel something is wrong, I don’t know what or even why, but I just hate not knowing.” I replied him. “Sheena, please listen to me, nothing is wrong and nothing is going to happen. Seeing your mother yesterday could have just been you hallucinating from a lack of sugar,” he informed me. I nodded my head to agree with him, even though I did not. I knew what I saw, and I know I will not be able to rest until I know otherwise.
