Kenma seemed to get along well with Ai's mother. She seemed to be sensitive to Kenma's lack of verbal communication. She was fine with him sitting there and observing, without making much conversation. She never found it odd or pressed Kenma to respond. Seeing the way his face would light up as he tasted her pancakes was more than enough.
"Watch out Kuroo," Ai snickered, "my mother is going to steal your best friend." They sat on the couch, but both were looking over their shoulders as Kenma helped Ai's mother wash the dishes.
"He's growing up." Kuroo cried dramatically. "After all these years, he's finally growing close to other people!"
"I don't think it's not that he isn't close to people, more so that he's really close with a few people and is content with that." Ai commented, looking at her pudding-headed friend lovingly. "I think Kenma is a really special sort of person." She smiled a little bit to herself.
"Ai," Kuroo said gravely, "you're so cute!" He tackled her and started tickling her. She howled with laughter and thrashed about on the couch.
"Damn you," she squealed, hitting him with a pillow. "Stop!" She pinched his nose closed and tugged on his messy hair.
"Okay, okay!" He yelled with a nasal voice.
"I can't tell if you two get along really well, or you just want to kill eachother." Kenma remarked with a deadpan face.
"I think it's a bit of both," Kuroo said, looking at Ai, still in his arms, and then to his best friend.
Ai nodded her head at Kenma. "Yeah, it's probably both at this point." She stretched her arm out for Kenma. "C'mere."
"I'm good," Kenma put his hands in front of him and started to back away.
"No way!" Ai grabbed Kenma's wrist and dragged him onto the couch between herself and Kuroo and gave him a great big bear hug. "You looked like you were jealous."
Kenma sighed, realizing there was no way Ai was going to let go of him. She was pretty good about boundaries and this was one of the first times she had ever tried to make any sort of physical contact with Kenma. He didn't hate it, but it was a bit of a bother.
"Our little boy is growing up." Kuroo wheezed.
"He's not your son." Ai rolled her eyes at her boyfriend, still holding Kenma close. Kenma made a very disturbed face. Kuroo and Ai both laughed at that. They brought the weekend to a close, the three of them ending it in laughter.
There was another practice match after school on Wednesday. Ai decided to go because her mother was on a short business trip and she didn't want to be alone in the house. She wouldn't be able to travel with the volleyball team so she had to travel alone by train. Tokyo was huge and the trains were confusing. Somehow, Ai made it to Fukurōdani on her own. She furiously texted Kuroo. Still, it took her twice the time and she had a feeling that she might have made it there in half the time if she had simply walked.
Ai: IM NOT GOING BACK ON THE TRAIN ALONE THIS IS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE
She entered the gym and took a seat, waiting for the game. She watched her school's team warm up. When she was watching, Ai found it difficult to choose a side to cheer for. Logically, she should cheer for her own school's team, and the team her boyfriend- (or whatever Kuroo was considered) was on. However, Bokuto looked so happy and excited when he was playing that she shouldn't help but cheer him on. He was adorable.
Bokuto was like an excited child, running around. He got easily dejected and overwhelmed all at once. Off the court, this would have driven Ai crazy, but as he was playing, Ai found this display to be particularly entertaining. It was a close practice match. Fukurodani had taken the first set, while Nekoma claimed the second. In the third set, the two were neck and neck pretty much. Ai was on the edge of her seat. In the blink of an eye, while both teams were essentially neck and neck, Bokuto scored the final point for Fukurodani. Ai cheered. She was energized by the eventful game.
"Hey, Kuroo, your girlfriend is cheering for the other team!" The lanky kid with the white hair laughed.
"Shut up, Lev." Yaku growled, kicking out his knees.
Kuroo looked up at Ai who was standing by the railing in the choir loft sort of seating that the gym had. "Ai-chan, how could you!" He cried melodramatically.
"Oi, Ai-chan is here?" Bokuto perked up, looking around to find her. Akaashi sighed.
"I'll be right down, Bokuto-san." She called.
"Betrayal!" Kuroo screamed.
When Ai made it down to the court, everyone was already halfway through with cleaning up. She had taken a detour to use the bathroom and touch up her mascara. She took her hair out of its ponytail and let it cascade over her shoulders like a waterfall of ink. She grinned at Bokuto as he came over. "You did very good today!" Ai praised, patting his bicep.
Akaashi sighed and sent her a look that said ' oh god, please do not '. "Bokuto-san, we need to clean up or coach will be mad."
"Yeah!" Bokuto said, still pumped up.
Ai looked to Akaashi, "You're a brave soul," she remarked, "keep up the good work." She touched his shoulder supportively.
"Ai, we are going to leave now." Kenma appeared beside her quietly. She jumped and suppressed a squeal.
"Sorry, Kenma." She apologized. " I didn't see you there." She turned to Akaashi once more. "Let's meet up again sometime, just the two of us, we can get some coffee or something and vent?"
Akaashi looked taken aback for a moment but smiled a bit. "Okay."
"Text me!" she yelled as she walked backwards towards the Nekoma volleyball team. She grinned and turned around. Kenma walked next to her. "You were so cool out there!" She complimented, but quietly as to not draw attention to Kenma.
"Ah," Kenma's eyes darted around, "thanks."
"Ai-chan, you traitor!" Kuroo whined, interrupting before she could say anything more to Kenma. She stuck her tongue out at him and helped one of the first years carry a case of sports drinks to the van.
"You're just being childish." The case was kind of heavy because Ai wasn't used to lifting heavy things. Kuroo took the case from her arms. It would have been a romantic gesture if he hadn't also been making that stupid face at her. Ai rolled her eyes at Kuroo and tugged at the case once more. "I can handle it."
"You're a girl, what kind of man am I if I let you carry something so heavy?" Kuroo had his own back strapped over his shoulder.
"Bold of you to claim yourself a man." Ai took the case back and tried to run ahead. The crate was awkward and bulky in her arms so her gait was more of a very brisk waddle. She could hear Kuroo snickering at her from behind. "I am a strong, independent young woman!" Ai declared as she handed off the case for Inuoka to load onto the bus.
"Get on," Kuroo nudged her leg with his foot, he was still laughing at her. Ai turned around and glared at him playfully. She boarded the bus and sat down near the back in an empty seat next to Kenma. She was acting a little bratty, but she was very thankful that Kuroo had managed to convince the coach that she could ride back with them. Ai didn't know if she would be able to survive another trip through the train station on her own.
Kenma was playing a game on his console, his eyes were huge and focused. She watched him play his game. His thumbs moved so fast, sending out combo moves as if it were nothing. She tuned out all of the background noise of laughter and chatter. Ai didn't remember falling asleep, but when she woke up, Kenma was gently shaking her shoulders. When he roused her, she was leaning halfway onto Kenma's body. She assumed that made it difficult for him to play his game.
"Sorry I fell asleep." She stifled a yawn. She, Kenma, and Kuroo, exited the bus and began walking home after they said their goodbyes to the rest of the team. Kenma continued playing his game.
"You guys played a really interesting game today," Ai hummed, swinging her arms as she walked. "It was really fun to see you and Bokuto-san playing against each other," Ai looked over to Kuroo, "it was super intense."
"Kenma and Akaashi too, it was really cool to see the two of them both playing in the same match, I haven't seen Akaashi play before but he's so calm. They're kind of similar like that." Ai commented. She looked thoughtfully for a moment. "Our volleyball team is pretty good, huh?" She flashed a grin up at Kuroo.
"Yeah," Kuroo grunted back at her, returning her smile.
"I didn't know Kenma had something like that in him." Ai cooed, "I was super impressed."
"Kenma is the brains and heart of our team." Kuroo said, looking nearly wise for a moment.
Kenma shivered and looked up from his game "Stop saying weird stuff like that."
"But really," Ai interrupted, looking rather passionate for once, "I can see why you guys like playing volleyball so much."
Kuroo went to his own home to shower and get dressed before going over to Ai's apartment. Ai had plenty of money that week for groceries and dinner, so she ordered chinese takeout for the both of them. When she had hung up, Kuroo leaned over her and wrapped her up in a hug from behind. Ai let herself be pliant in his arms and he rested his chin on her shoulder.
"It's been a while since we have been able to be alone without distractions." She stated, grabbing both of his hands and turning around to face him. Kuroo had towel dried his hair and it was down flatter than usual. Her heart flipped in her chest. He looked amazing. Her fingers brushed his cheek affectionately.
Ai had gotten showered and changed too, she was wearing her normal shorts and oversized shirt. She pulled the part of his hair that covered his eye. "Your hair looks really cute like this." She scratched his scalp. Ai smiled at him softly. He pulled Ai closer to him. His eyes were dilated. Ai tilted her head up to kiss him. She felt like her chest was going to explode. They hadn't had much time to make out in the past week with all of the drama going on. Ai wanted to take this time to familiarize herself with every ridge and groove in Kuroo's mouth. Ai pushed him against the wall and he ran his hands through her hair. She shivered at his touch.
She couldn't help but run her fingers over his chest, slipping them down to slide under his shirt so she could feel his bare skin. Kuroo's hands wandered from her hair to her hips, one hand venturing to her ass and cupping it, giving it a gentle squeeze. Ai and Kuroo were breathing hard. It didn't matter that they both had fiery breaths fanning over each other's faces, the only thing they needed was to feel each other.
Ai liked Kuroo a lot. She liked being around him, walking to school or even watching those dumb horror movies with him. Though they hadn't known each other for quite that long, she felt comforted by his presence. But what Ai truly craved was physical displays of affection. So she was relishing the way Kuroo's bottom lip caught hers. His hand rose and slipped up underneath her shirt. "Kuroo I-"
She was interrupted almost perfectly by the doorbell ringing and a voice at the door. "Delivery." A person called from the other side of the door. She sighed as Kuroo let her go. Chinese food was apparently more appealing than kissing her. Ai turned away and grabbed her wallet off of the kitchen table. She didn't seem bothered in the least that she was answering the door in her pajamas. She paid for the food and brought it back into the kitchen.
They are together and Ai slipped her arms around him while Kuroo washed the dishes. He was so warm, he smelled good. Ai buried her face in his back and took in a deep breath.
"Ai-chan?" Kuroo asked.
"Hmmm?"
"Are you sniffing me?" Kuroo put the chopsticks on the drying rack.
"It's not my fault, you smell so good." She snuggled in closer.
"Really, because gauging from how you acted earlier, you were interested in everyone but me. You even made a date with another guy in front of me!" Ai ran her hands over his stomach.
"Who, Akaashi? You know it's not like that." She stepped up on her tip toes and brushed a kiss at the nape of his neck. "Are you jealous?" She had an impish tone to her voice. "That's cute." She ran a hand over his chest. She let go after a while and pulled him toward her room. She grinned at him and pushed him onto the bed, tackling Kuroo before he could protest.
