Julia
As soon as we stopped, Jake stood up and walked quickly to the nearest exit.
"I think he saw you looking at him," I murmured to Sage.
"Yeah. We have to follow him! It may be our only chance!" she hissed back.
Lili had already started gathering our things, and by the time we turned around to tell her our decision, she was following Jake to the exit. We jumped up and followed her off.
"He's right there," she said. By the time we caught up to her, she was leaning casually against a wall, twirling a strand of her light blonde hair around a finger and looking at her phone. She was blending in perfectly. "I think he's getting on a train! We have to hurry."
We all hurried across the station to the other train, Lili trailing behind somewhat. She was not the greatest runner. Sage and I jumped on the train just before it started to move, Lili running along side it.
"Jump!' Sage yelled, holding out her hand. Despite her dislike of Lili, she had accepted my editor as part of the team.
Lili jumped, arms reaching out toward us. Sage caught her hand, and we both pulled her into the train. We all collapsed into the nearest seats, Lili almost hyperventilating. The jump had scared her, not giving her the adrenaline Sage might have gotten.
I looked Lili in the eye. "Are you ok?" I asked, handing her a water bottle.
She nodded and took a drink of water. The cool liquid seemed to calm her down, and her breathing returned to normal.
"Is Jake on the train?" she asked in her usual brisk manner.
Sage looked around the car. It was mostly empty. The only other occupants were two girls facing away from us. They had earbuds in and seemed to be watching a movie on a laptop, which had explained their not noticing our dramatic entrance.
"I saw him," I replied in answer to Sage's pleading look. "He went to another car."
"We need to find him," Lili broke in. "but we can't go like this. He'll recognize us, and we may not be able to follow him another time."
"Easy. We can change clothes. We do have all our luggage," Sage said cheerfully.
We opened our suitcases and rummaged through.
"We need to totally change our styles," Sage continued. "Here."
She tossed me a basic pair of shorts and a sporty tank top.
"Ok. Sage, I'm thinking like a plaid shirt over a tank top for you. Maybe with sandals?" I suggested.
"I have a pair of gladiators you could wear," Lili piped up.
Sage took them and walked to the nearest bathroom. She could barely squeeze through the tiny entry.
"Need anything, Lili?" I asked.
"I have everything I need," she said with a smile.
After a few minutes, the bathroom door opened and an entirely different Sage emerged. The silky white tank top was mostly hidden by an unbuttoned blue and green plaid shirt knotted below her stomach. Her skinny jeans, ripped in several places, went perfectly with the gladiator sandals. Then I saw her face. I hadn't realized she took her cosmetic bag into the bathroom with her. She had on heavy eyeliner and mascara that went well with her green eyes, light red lipstick, and her brown curly hair was in a loose french braid and thrown over her left shoulder. Sage grinned as she approached.
"So?" What do you think?"
"Perfect. Your turn, Julia," Lili responded.
I smiled and gave Sage two thumbs up as I walked past.
"Feel free to use my jewelry box," I called over my shoulder as I squished through the door and pulled on the shorts and tank top. I decided on a magenta scarf for my hair. It would match the tank top almost perfectly. I took off my makeup, reapplied a lighter coat, and exited the bathroom.
"Well? How do I look?" I asked.
"Very sporty. Very unlike you," Sage giggled.
"Good," I replied, satisfied with my transformation. "You're up, Lili."
She slipped toward the bathroom, and I turned to Sage. She had my jewelry box and was digging through it, muttering to herself as she did so. One by one, she pulled out five bangle bracelets and put them on her right wrist. She tittered.
"Jingly."
Just then, Lili emerged, and Sage and I burst out laughing. She looked prim and proper, like an old-fashioned librarian. When our snorts of laughter finally subsided, Lili had come back to her seat and was digging through her bag again. I almost broke into laughter again when she stood up. She had added a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles to her grey pencil skirt and white blouse.
"You look amazing!" Sage exclaimed, "I haven't laughed that hard since Julia stayed up all night and went face-first into her oatmeal the next morning!"
I reddened. Lili smiled as she sat down.
"We can all go together until we get to the right car, but then we need to split up. You guys can go together, but I should go after you. I don't exactly fit in."
"I agree," Sage said, bursting into giggles again. We all stood up and walked toward the door.
