|| Chapter 118 ||
Author's POV
It was silent; no communication was exchanged between Cheryl and Kimberley, which was quite unusual for the two. All they could do was sit either end of the bed, each gently grasping a hold of their daughters' hand, eyes never shifting away from a sleeping Madison.
Cheryl gingerly raises Madison's hand up to her lips, lovingly kissing the olive skin, soon retreating it back down and lying her head right beside it.
Kimberley internally beats herself, watching her broken wife and broken daughter. She was sure this would be unfixable. She didn't mean to, of course she didn't. Madison was her little baby, her everything, she never imagined to ever hurt her daughter in such a way.
The Geordie sighs softly, sweet memories now playing in her line of vision.
~~~~~
"Did you pick these flowers?" Madison asks.
"Kimba did," The pet name Cheryl was sounding brought a smile to Madison's face. The smile hadn't left her expression all afternoon, maybe it was the bright sun, and the blossoming gardens, or maybe it was the Geordie making her way into the teens world.
"So you don't like flowers?"
"I love flowers," Cheryl quickly answers. "That's why Kimba kinda did all this for us." She shrugs shyly.
"Apple trees are nice too," Madison starts "Peach trees as well, I love figs.. I wanted my dad to plant a fig tree out back once.. He wasn't having any of it. Have you ever had a pear right off a tree? Or oranges? There's this farm that's about an hour drive from my house.. They have all sorts. I used to go with my brother." Again, she mistakenly brings up her brother. She mentally beats herself for rambling, it was a bad quality she had.
Cheryl found her rambling adorable.
"We don't have any fruit trees planted, we do have a cherry blossom tree, just a short walk away. We can always plant one if you'd like?" They were both so naïve.
"Cherry blossoms are beautiful," Madison smiles widely, her cheeks grow sore from all the smiling she'd been doing. "Ever sat under one and just... looked up?"
"How do you mean?" Cheryl pouts in misunderstanding.
"Come, I'll show you." Madison leads them to the blossom tree coming into view, her feet pick up in speed, and her heart rages with excitement. Cheryl's smile and heart mirrors the teens as she follows close behind.
~~~~~~
"We never did plant her that tree," Cheryl rasps, tears forming once again in her eyes.
"Huh?"
The Geordie sits up, wiping her tears in a frustrated motion. "She wanted a fig tree and we failed to plant her one."
Kimberley's heart stills in beats, she wished to be dead in this moment. She opens her mouth to speak, but Cheryl's beat her to it.
"We also failed to build her that greenhouse she wanted," She sniffs, "She's only ever asked for simple things, and we couldn't even get her a fcuking greenhouse built."
"Babe—"
"H-How is she supposed t-to remember all that stuff? H-How is she going to remember all the small d-details of the relationship w-we built with her?" She cries, Kimberley shooting off her seat and rushing over to her wife's side.
"C'mere baby—"
"No!" Cheryl pushes her away, "You did this." She grits. "You did." Her breathing is in rage, "So you don't get to hold us, you don't get to comfort us! Her blood is on your hands."
The words break Kimberley's heart, the tears rush down the blonde's cheeks, completely shattered. Kimberley nods, chin quivering, eyes pouring. She didn't have room to speak, because her wife was right.
Madison's blood was on her hands.
She'll take the abuse; she understood Cheryl's outrage.
"You're right," Kimberley rasps, "You're right." She gulps, her throat tightening up once more.
Cheryl's fists unclench, her body coming back to reality. She takes a few steps back, sitting in her seat once again.
I just need to stay calm. Cheryl kept repeating to herself. Just stay calm.
Once they both returned to their seating, Madison's hand instantly grasped her mother's hand.
"Mmm." Madison groans in agony.
"Madison!?" Cheryl shoots up, "DOCTOR!" She shouts, both her and Kimberley's eyes lock on the teen, but are ripped away as the doctor comes flying in, followed by nurses.
"This is excellent," He smiles, "Alright lets have a look at her eyes," He pulls out his flashlight, blasting the light into her eyes.
"Uh!" Madison yelps.
"Well, that's a good sign." He laughs lightly.
Cheryl and Kimberley remain quiet, not wanting to disturb their daughter's stirring.
"Alright Kiddo," Doctor Burn speaks softly, "Try opening your eyes for me."
Madison's body doesn't react, its almost as if she was stilled in a moment, unable to escape.
"Do you hear me?" He speaks softly once more.
"Mmm." Madison groans, but no respond to her eyes.
"I-Is she okay?" Cheryl asks, crying.
The doctor smiles sympathetically at the Geordie, giving her a slight nod.
"Madison?" Doctor Burn speaks to her again, "Come on, let's get those eyes opened."
Soon enough her eyes flutter opened, squinting and then relaxing to the harsh light of the hospital room.
Doctor Burn instantly sees the panic in her eyes, "Madison?"
"AH!" The teen screams, pushing the Doctor back, failing to escape. The nurses hold her down as she panics.
Cheryl's tears never did stop nor did Kimberley's.
Their daughter was a mess, and so were they.
"Madison we are here to help—"
"Get off me! Get off!" She throws her fists, "You're trying to kill me!" The teen's green eyes form their tears. "AH!" She screams loudly, but Doctor Burn doesn't give up without a fight, feeling Madison's body giving out and relaxing back into the bed.
"You've got quite the arms," He chuckles, "Now are you going to let me help you?"
Madison gulps, taking a look around the room, "Could you.. Maybe.. Have your nurses leave the room please?" She asks, feeling nervous.
"Of course," He smiles, needing to give her all the comfort she requests.
The nurses leave quickly.
"The other two are still here." She mumbles, shifting her eyes away from a now hysteric Cheryl and Kimberley.
He sighs, knowing exactly what that meant. "I'm... sorry." Dr. Burn clears his throat, "Could you maybe... leave us alone for a few minutes?"
Madison doesn't take much notice of her Mother's leaving the room in tears.
"Now tell me something Madison," He smiles, sighing softly. "That is your name, isn't it?"
"Obviously..." She frowns, "Why am I here?"
"You fell on your head – don't touch that." He chuckles, instantly grabbing her hand before she touched the bandage.
"Now tell me, how old are you?"
"Um." She pauses, her mind working hard. "Um."
"Okay let me ask you—"
"How come I don't know how old I am?!" She tries to bolt up, but Dr. Burn keeps her in place. "Wh-What's happened to me!"
"I need you to listen to me, okay?" His voice calms her, she finds herself nodding. "This kind of stuff happens. You fell on your head, but I am certain your memory will return, you just need your rest."
She gulps, understanding. "H-How old am I?"
"Fifteen." He smiles.
"I have a question." She asks, in which he chuckles finding the teen quite adorable.
"What's that?"
"Those two women weren't nurses were they—"
"No—"
"Who are they?"
"They're your Mother's."
"How can I have two Moms?" She frowns, confused.
He clears his throat, "You'll have to ask them that question yourself." He gently stands up. "You need your rest Madison. Would you like me to call your Mum's back in?"
She hesitates but nods eventually.
"I'll check in with you later." Dr. Burn exits the room, getting Kimberley and Cheryl to walk straight over to him.
"Please tell us she's not lost her memory—"
"She'll need time, like I said, this stuff happens all the time—"
"What are we supposed to do—"
"She wants yous in there with her."
Cheryl doesn't hear anything after that running back to the room, she stops right at the door, her heart abruptly picking up.
She engrosses her daughter lying in bed, staring aimlessly at the ceiling, a frown adoring her expression.
She clears her throat, walking in with Kimberley trailing behind her.
"Hey," Cheryl whispers, hesitantly taking her seat beside Madison once again.
"This is weird." The teen giggles, "It's like sitting with two complete strangers – oh no don't cry." She bites her lower lip, "I didn't mean it like – the Doc told me.. I just, sorry." She cringes, shifting her eyes away from a crying Cheryl.
Madison clears her throat, now looking at Kimberley. "What's your name?"
Kimberley smirks, "Kimberley – but you call me Mum."
"I feel like I know you, but not quite. Can I get a recap of everything?"
Cheryl chuckles, finding her daughter adorable. "Even when you're not well you still find a way to be cheeky."
Madison giggles, but soon regrets it. "Ah." She winces, the pain shooting to her head.
Cheryl instantly stands up "I'll go get the Doctor—"
"I'm fine." Madison stops her, "He said I just need some rest."
This stops Cheryl from walking out and returning yet again to her seat.
The room falls into an uncomfortable silence, but of course Madison breaks it.
"So did you guys like.." She clears her throat, "Does one of you – are one of you a transgender?"
Kimberley coughs, "What?!"
"What?" The teen raises her hands up, "I mean, the doctor said yous are my Mum's so... I was just wondering."
Cheryl bites her lower lip, looking down at the ground.
God I fcuking love her.
"Well?" The teen pushes.
"No. We are both very much women—"
"A woman can be a transgender—"
"How is it that you have knowledge to all this stuff but can't remember us?" Cheryl asks, curious.
"I don't know... my brain wanted to erase that part of my life." She shrugs, "You talk funny." She giggles.
Cheryl rolls her eyes, "If you weren't bandaged up right now I'd tickle you."
Madison smiles, eyes slowing giving out. "I don't think," She yawns, "I'd like that."
Cheryl chuckles, "God." She breathes, "I'm falling in love with her all over again." She tears up, gazing at her daughter as she falls asleep right before her eyes.
Kimberley whispers, "I'm really sorry."
Cheryl shakes her head, "No I'm sorry, I didn't mean what I said. I was just a mess.. I was terrified we'd lose her."
A sob escapes Kimberley's lips, "I-I just – you didn't s-see them."
Cheryl walks over to her wife's side, taking a seat on the blondes lap, desperate for a cuddle at this point. They hold onto each other, almost like this moment wouldn't last forever, almost as if time would be looped back and their memories would be lost.
They look into each other's eyes, both smiling softly and kissing ever so gently. A sweet sigh hums into their seal, glad their little girl was okay... even if she wasn't completely all right.
A nurse interrupts their loving moment, "I'm sorry, visiting hours are over." She speaks, hesitantly.
"But—"
"We can't leave her." Kimberley interrupts her wife, gently sliding the Geordie off her lap. "We are her mothers, please, you have to try and understand." She sighs, "We can't leave a fifteen year old all alone in a bloody hospital – that's absolute bullocks."
The nurse shifts her eyes, "I'll-I'll see what I can do." She whispers, scurrying back out.
Kimberley sighs, smiling. She turns around with a grin, "What?" She giggles.
Cheryl shakes her head, "You're going to get it—"
"A present?" Her grin grows, "We best keep our voices down." She pouts, pulling her wife in and gazing at their sleeping daughter. Although their smiles were painted with relief, they were still very much terrified of what tomorrow might bring.
Another day, another morning, another minute spent with their little baby girl.
