Forty One
Pete was sitting at his desk with his laptop open in front of him as always. Patrick was sitting on Pete's lap pretending to pay attention to what he was showing him on the screen. All he saw were line, numbers and bars. None of it actually made sense in his head.
He groaned and threw his head back to rest it on Pete's shoulder. Turning it so he was facing his neck. He stuck his tongue out. Pressing it against Pete's skin, just under his ear.
"Can we just watch some porn?" He whined.
"No." Pete laughed.
Patrick pressed his hand against Pete's knee. Squeezing briefly. "Can we just make some porn then?"
"That's it." Pete pushed the chair away from his desk. He lifted Patrick off of his lap and stood. "Go sit on the sofa."
"No." He pouted.
"Yes. You said you weren't going to distract me. And you're distracting me."
"I'm not-"
"Sit!" He pointed to the couch.
Patrick didn't argue anymore. He bowed his head and sat down in the comfortable seat. Pete sat back down at his desk. Typing more boring shit into the computer.
Instead of taking out his phone and busying himself, Patrick decided to just watch Pete. He was wearing his usual suit except the jacket was draped over the back of his chair. And his sleaves were rolled up to his elbows. Showing off the tattoos he always tried so hard to hide from the public.
Pete could feel Patrick watching him. He glanced up from the computer screen to confirm. Smiling when his dark eyes connected with Patrick's angel blue ones. Patrick smiled back and Pete felt his chest tighten. He'd definitely made the right decision in choosing Patrick. No one else could effect him the way that little man did.
"I love you." Patrick said for no reason at all. Just making Pete's chest tighten even more.
"I love you more." And he did. Patrick had no idea how much he did.
"Can I have a kiss?" He widened his eyes innocently and stuck out his bottom lip.
Pete smirked. "You're just trying to distract me again."
"Me?" He touched his hand to his chest in faux shock.
"Yes you!"
Pete's eyes were crinkling at the sides from how wide he was smiling. When was the last time they were this simply happy? Just for no reason at all? It felt dangerous almost. Every time they were in good spirits, something terrible happened.
Pete's smile slowly disappeared. What was it going to be this time? More cheating allegations? Bad press reviews? Brendon and Ryan problems? It was like they weren't allowed to be happy.
"What's wrong?" Patrick's eyebrows knit in confusion as Pete's smile vanished from his face.
"Something bad is going to happen."
"What?" Patrick stood from the couch and looked around the room. "Why would you say that?"
"I can feel it. When has the universe ever allowed us to be this carefree?"
"Well-"
"We couldn't even have a peaceful wedding day."
"Holy smokes." He covered his mouth with his hand. "You're right."
A knock at the door interrupted their private worry session. Pete sat up straighter in his chair.
"Come in."
The door opened slowly. Revealing one of the house maids. "Mr. Wentz, sir, there's someone here to see you."
"Who is it?" Pete frowned. He wasn't expecting anyone.
"It's for Mr. Patrick Wentz actually, sir."
Pete glanced at Patrick briefly and turned back to face the maid. "Send them up."
On a nod and a smile, the maid was gone. The door clicking closed behind her.
Patrick was going to sit back down but he was feeling too anxious. They'd literally just spoke about bad things happening and now there was an unexpected visitor dropping by? This couldn't seem like more of a set up. It was as if he was in one of those written drama series where the main characters have to go through a bunch of unnecessary bullshit just to be happy in the last chapter. And to be quite frank, he didn't like it at all.
There was another knock at the door. Signaling that the maid let the person up. Pete only hesitated for a second. But then he nodded towards Patrick to open the door.
Patrick felt like this shoes were made of stone as he took the slow steps towards what he was sure was going to be the start of a problem. He took a deep breath with his hand on the doorknob. Twisting it and opening it just enough to see who was on the other side.
Holy shit! William!
Without thinking clearly, he slammed the door closed. He turned towards Pete. Standing in front of the door to make sure no one could get out and no one could come in. Pete's eyes narrowed suspiciously.
"Who was that?" He stood up, adjusting his already perfect tie.
"Wrong house." Patrcik winced at his stupid reply.
Pete smirked. "You're such a bad liar."
"I-I know." He hung his head. "But I don't think you should go out there."
"Fine." He stood two feet in front of him. Crossing his broad arms over his chest. "Then let them come in here."
"I-No!"
"They went through all the trouble of coming to visit you. The least you could do is actually see them."
Patrick almost rolled his eyes. Almost. If he would have actually done it, it would have looked suspicious. Pete was teasing him. He knew Patrick didn't want him to see who was on the other side of that door.
"I-I just don't want you to see them."
"Clearly." He laughed. "Why?"
"It's a surprise!"
His eyebrows rose fractionally. His disbelief showing clearly. "A surprise?" He repeated. "What kind of surprise?"
"The kind that surprised the hell out of me too." He muttered too low for Pete to hear.
"What?"
"It's just-"
"Hey!" Brendon's animated voice rang through the door. "You look good William. The broken nose is healing well."
Patrick's eyes closed tightly. Fucking Brendon Urie, everyone! He opened them again and let them slide up to see Pete's face.
"William as in the William you cheated on me with?"
"I didn't cheat on yo-"
"Why the hell is he in my house?"
"I honestly don't know." He held both hands up in front of him.
"You're honestly a better liar than I thought."
Pete -not so gently- pushed him aside. Patrick lost his footing a little but didn't fall. Before he could stop him, Pete swung open the door. William was standing there talking to Brendon. He turned when he heard the door click open. His eyes widened when he recognized Pete. He scrambled back a couple of steps to make sure they weren't in arms reach of each other.
"I-uh I want to see Patrick."
"Why?" Pete crossed his arms.
"To- I have to tell him something."
"What?"
"William." Patrick slid past Pete into the hall. "What the hell are you doing here? How did you find me here?"
"Patrick!" He sounded relieved. "I've been trying to contact you. I was worried you were hurt."
"Hurt? Why?"
"I was watching this video and I saw you and-and him." His eyes darted to Pete's momentarily. "You told me you were divorced. You said your last name was Stump."
"Did you?" Pete glared down at him.
"I- that's a long story." He turned to William. "I'm fine, William. You can't just show up to my house uninvited-"
"And you will never be invited."
"You should have called." He continued on. Ignoring Pete.
"I tried!" He reached out to him. Stopping when he looked at Pete.
"Ryan!" Brendon yelled. There was a muffled reply. "Get out here! There's hella drama!"
"Maybe I came at a bad time."
"Every time is a bad time for you to come looking for my husband."
"I was fucking worried, okay? I care about him too."
"You're really over stepping here." He walked closer.
William stepped back. "I was just- there was this guy at the shop. He was on the phone and he was saying something about Patrick and how-"
"There are thousands of Patrick's out there!"
"I know but it made me think of him-"
"Leave."
"Patrick!"
"Pete, you don't have to be so rude!"
"You're taking up for him?"
"No! I'm just saying-"
"Then he needs to leave before I lose my temper and drag him out."
"Someone hasn't had their morning cocktail." Ryan whispered in a sing song voice.
"He was just worried about me!"
"Fine. You want to spend time with him and not listen to me? Then go ahead."
"Pete-"
"Fuck you, Patrick." He stepped into the office, slamming the door.
"Where is his poise and rationality?"
"Not the time, Brendon." Ryan muttered. He walked over and opened the door.
"Of course you're going to go running after-"
"Save it." He rolled his eyes. Closing the got damn door behind him.
