Forty

"Why is he here?" Were the first words from Meagan's mouth when they walked through the door.

Patrick could feel his hand beginning to sweat in Pete's. He held his chin up and made sure his face didn't expose any of the nervousness he was feeling. Pete wanted him here and it was Pete's baby too. So he was welcomed.

"He's my husband." Pete told her.

"He has nothing to do with the baby."

"Yes he does, Meagan. If he's going to be with me, he's going to be around-"

"No he is not going to be around my child. I can promise you that."

"Can we not get into this here?" Pete glanced around the at the other people sitting around in the waiting room.

"Where would you like to get into it then, Pete?"

"Stop making a scene, Meagan."

"This isn't a scene. You want a scene? I'll show you a fucking scene." She dug into her large bag and pulled out a few papers that were folded in half. She threw them at Pete. The sound it made when hitting his face was louder than expected. "Annulment papers, Peter?"

"It's just faster than the divorce-"

"Annulment?" She said again. "You want to pretend this just never happened. Pretend we never happened."

"Meagan-"

"For him?!"

"We will talk about this later."

"We will talk about this now."

"Mrs. Wentz?" The small woman with the clipboard poked her head from the back room.

The three of them turned away from the tense conversation to look at the woman. She motioned for them to follow her so they did. Patrick made sure to walk behind everyone else. She escorted them into an empty room with a few seats and a stretched out chair in the middle beside the sonogram machine.

"Top off, Mrs. Wentz. Have a seat and wait for the doctor." The women left them in the room alone.

"I don't feel comfortable taking my shirt off with him in the room." She told Pete.

"I'm so uninterested." Patrick finally spoke.

"That's so not the point. I don't want you in here."

"Oh please, you've modeled wearing nothing more than a string for thousands of people to see. But you don't feel comfortable-"

"Patrick." Pete interrupted him. He snapped his mouth closed. "Meagan, just lift the shirt above your stomach if you don't want to take it off."

"Can't he just wait outside of the door?"

"No. There was an incident at a restaurant and I don't want him out of my sight."

"An incident?" She scoffed.

"Andy came after him."

"What?"

"Andy cornered him at a restaurant telling him to break up with me or he was going to hurt him."

"Are you serious?"

"Why do you seem so upset about it? You don't care." Patrick muttered.

"It's just strange." Meagan lifted her shirt over her head and handed it to Pete. He held it in his hand as she laid down in the chair.

"I'm Dr. Iero." The man walked into the room in his white coat. He sat on the stool beside where Meagan was lying. "How are we doing today, Meagan?"

"We're stressed the fuck out." She sighed.

"Is that so?" As he was speaking, he was massaging her stomach with the gel. "Why is that?"

"Personal reasons." Her eyes met Pete's and he frowned.

"There's the head." Dr. Iero said in a low, off putting voice. Like he'd done this too many times to find it interesting anymore.

"I see it." Meagan's tone was the same.

Patrick's eyes widened in excitement. He'd never seen anything like it before. Not that he exactly knew what he was seeing. It just looked like a bunch of black and white shapes on the screen.

"It's moving around quite a lot. If he or she doesn't stay still, we won't be able to get through this entire thing."

"Is being overactive a bad sign?" It was easy to spot the concern in Pete's voice.

"No. Not at all. It just makes getting the proper ultrasound pictures difficult." He moved the device around on her lower stomach and sighed. "Maybe you two could try talking. By this stage in the pregnancy, it's become familiar with your voice. It could calm it down."

"What are we supposed to say?" She frowned.

"Anything."

"Hey there, baby. I-It's mommy. Be still for the nice doctor, okay?"

Dr. Iero shook his head. "Maybe the father?"

"Hey there, kiddo." Pete started awkwardly. "Calm down in there. What the hell are you doing? Break dancing?"

Patrick covered his mouth with his hands to silence his chuckles. The doctor frowned.

"Pete!" Meagan snapped.

"It was a joke." He rolled his eyes. "It's not like he knows what I'm talking about."

"Maybe one of you could try singing to him?"

"Patrick sings!" Pete offered.

"No."

"Give him a chance. It might work-"

"My baby doesn't not want to hear some stranger sing."

"He's hardly a stranger."

"I don't want him singing to our baby!"

"You can calm your tit, Meagan. I wasn't going to sing anyway."

"It might work." Pete argued.

"I probably haven't even been around long enough for the kid to know what my voice sounds like. Or at least for my voice to be some kind of soothing sound for it. It probably just sound like every other voice-"

"There we go. He's relaxing a little." The doctor shut him up. "There's his arm. Those are his fingers."

"That's so cute." Meagan smiled. And she actually looked human for a few seconds. "Look at his little hand!"

"That's his foot." He continued on as if he didn't hear her. "If we go up a bit, you'll see his legs and thighs."

"That looks like a penis." Patrick pointed to one of the shapes on the screen.

Dr. Iero looked over his shoulder at Patrick. "I was under the impression that the sex of the child was to remain unknown."

"It was." Meagan sneered. "So that is a penis?"

"Well yes. But-"

"I'm so sorry! I was just saying things. I didn't mean to-"

"How stupid can you be? Do you not know what a surprise is? Are you so selfish that-"

"Meagan, lay off. He didn't know what he was doing."

"He knew damn well what he was doing!"

"He's not the doctor here!"

"All this arguing is upsetting Meagan. Which could raise both her and the baby's blood pressure. I'm going to have to ask you two to leave."

"Wait I-"

"I'm sorry sir." His tone was final.

Meagan watched as Patrick walked out of the room. Taking her husband with him. But not before pete tossed her shirt in her lap. She carefully slid her phone out of her front pocket. Her finger were shaking with anger as she typed the text message.

Meagan: Double the price if he's gone in a week.

The reply was instantaneous.

Mikey: Done ;)
