Eighteen

Patrick wasn't asleep. He was laying in the bed with his eyes closed. Letting the heat from the sun warm his face. For the first time since he'd woken up from the coma, he felt happy. And of course it was because he spent the day with Pete.

It felt like old times. Just him, Pete, Brendon and Ryan hanging out all day. No one was thinking about Meagan by the end of the night. She didn't even exist. Patrick wished every day could be like-

He was snapped out of his Utopian thoughts when he felt ice cold water being poured on his head. What the fuck. His eyes snapped open as he sat up quickly in the bed. His eyes landing on Meagan and the water bottle in her hands.

"What the fuck?!"

"I thought you were my friend!" She yelled.

Really? She thought they were friends? She belittled him at their first meeting. She tried to ruin his wedding. She waited until he was in a coma and snatched his fucking husband up. And now she was carrying his husband's baby. She really thought they could be friends after that?

"W-We are." Patrick ran his hands down his now wet face.

"No. We aren't!" She let the empty water bottle drop to the ground. Her arms crossed her her chest. "If we were friends, you wouldn't have burst in my room and hugged my husband."

"Meagan, I just found out someone tried to kill me. I think I had a right to need a hug." Patrick slid out of the bed and stood up.

"Fine. Maybe the hug wasn't a big deal. But you two didn't come into the house until one in the morning!"

"And we were with Brendon and Ryan the whole time!"

"Yeah. Two people who hate me." She tossed her hands in the air dramatically.

"They don't hate you."

She pursed her lips in raised her eyebrows slightly. Her head tilted to the side.

"Okay. Maybe Ryan doesn't hate you."

"Well he damn sure doesn't like me!" She whined. Tossing herself on the bottom of the bed. Away from the water spot.

Patrick sat down beside her.

"Well, I like you."

"Do you really?" She glanced at him with puppy dog eyes. That's exactly what she was, Patrick thought. A puppy. A dog. A bitch.

"Yeah."

"Oh thank you, Patrick!" She hugged him with one arm. "I was really starting to worry that you and Pete might be sneaking around."

"I would never do that!"

"I know." She laughed lightly. "It's silly. But sometimes I feel like he might love you more than he loves me."

"Of course he loves me more."

Patrick bit the inside of his mouth. Holy shit, he said that out loud. Meagan stared at him with questioning eyes.

"What?"

"I just meant, I was the first person he actually loved. We were like best friends. I took his virginity. His gay virginity anyway. You and him don't have as much history."

"I knew it!" She whined

"But guess what?" Patrick put her hair behind her ear and smiled.

"What?" She sulked.

"I don't want him."

"Y-You don't?" She sat up straighter.

"No." He laughed.

"Are you serious?"

"Would I lie to you?"

"No. No you wouldn't." She smiled.

"Girl, Pete is old news. He's married to you now. And I'm moving on."

"I'm so happy to hear you say that!"

"And you're having a baby." He touched her stomach lightly. Feeling the hard surface. Wanting to cringe at it. "It would take a terrible person to try to ruin that."

"You're right!" Meagan stood up slowly. "You've just made my day Patrick. How could I ever thank you?"

You could jump off a bridge.

"You should do something for you!"

"What do you mean?"

"You want Pete to love you more, right?"

"Of course!"

"Have you heard the expression, absence makes the heart grow fonder?"

"I don't follow."

Of course not. Brunette at birth. Blonde at heart.

"Leave. Go on a vacation. Visit your family."

"Why?"

"Because you need to show Pete that you can be without him. That you don't need him. You want him. And he'll realize how much he misses you. He'll go crazy thinking about you. He'll realize he can't be without you."

"Really?" Her eyes lit up.

"He might even go and find you. Force you to come back to the house."

"You really think that will work?"

"I know it will."

"I'm going to go plan a vacation-"

"No. Leave tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

"Well, if you really want to throw him off. If you really want to make him sweat."

"I do!"

"Good." Patrick stood up. "Go pack your bags." He grabbed her hands. "Don't even tell him until you're on your way to the airport."

"You're so smart, Patrick!" She squealed. "I'm going to go." She turned to leave but stopped. "How long should I stay gone?"

Forever ring a bell?

"Just for a few weeks." Her eyes widened. Shit. Patrick let go of her hands and rubbed her arms. "This isn't only for Pete, it's for you too."

"Me?"

"I'm worried about you Meagan. You have been so stressed lately because of everything. I want you to go away and relax. Take it easy... For the baby."

"You're right, Pat."

"Don't call me Pat."

"Sorry." She smiled again. "I'm going to go. Maybe even to Paris."

"You go, Meagan!" He called after her as she walked out of the room.

Stupid bitch.

Patrick walked over and lifted his phone off the dresser. He had a bunch of texts and missed calls. Of course he went for the texts.

Pete: I'm at work. Sorry for leaving without waking you.

Pete: Have a good day.

Pete: STAY OUT OF TROUBLE.

William: Hey

William: Can you call me when you get this?

William: Patrick I'm sorry about yesterday

William: Even though I don't understand why.

William: I wanna take you out again

William: are you ignoring me?

William: standing me up just like every other guy huh? At least tell me what I did wrong

William: thought you were different

William: Have a good day

Patrick sighed. He felt like such a bad guy. He pressed a button and listened to the phone ring in his ear. It rang longer than he thought it would.

"Hey, you!"

Patrick smiled. "Hey."

"I'm surprised you're calling."

"How's work?"

"Worky."

He laughed. "Can I come to the office?"

"Sure? What's wrong?"

"I-I just miss you." Patrick frowned at the words he didn't know he would say.

"I miss you too." He laughed lightly. "Come whenever, Pat."

"I'm on my way."
