24| The new twist in our story

Thank God for Friday. Adedayo prepped himself to leave and before he could, Rose called his attention from where she stood by the door. "Mr. Michael, John is still in class."

He raised his brows, "John?"

"Yes." A sigh left her lips. "I think his mum is late, again."

He nodded to her words. John was a young boy of eight years of age and part of the class he was in charge of.

"Okay, bye. Tell Joy I'm greeting." She said with a smile and he nodded. "Good night." He told her and she was on her way.

Adedayo carried his briefcase and walked to the class the little boy was seated within. For a moment, he watched him play with the pencil in his hand.

"John." He called and the boy's eyes were on him right away. Adedayo walked up to him and took his seat on the chair in front of him.

"Did your mum say anything about coming by late?"

The boy shook his head. "She said she would pick me." He replied and continued with his play. Adedayo stared at him for a while before he looked around. Everyone had gone home. He couldn't leave him by himself.

"John, do you know your mum's phone number?"

He nodded his head and Dayo was grateful for that. Quickly, he took out his phone which belonged to the Tecno brand. John called the number and Dayo inputted them. Soon, it was ringing and he held it close to his ear.

"Hello." She picked it.

"Hello, good afternoon, madam. This is Mr. Adedayo Michael, your son's class teacher."

"Oh, Mr. Michael. Good afternoon."

"I was wondering if you're aware of the school's time out. John has been waiting for some time now."

He heard her mutter something on her other end but was unable to hear the exact words. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry about this, Mr. Michael. His father was supposed to pick him up. I'll send someone to come pick him up." She explained and thanked him once more before disconnecting the call.

Adedayo looked at John one more time before relaxing into his seat. He was going to wait till someone comes and takes this child home. He worried something might happen if he left him on his own.

An hour later and no one had shown up to claim the child with him. Adedayo stretched his neck to the view of the gate and shook his head at it all. Was it a lie when his mother said someone would be here to pick him? Perhaps it was and perhaps it wasn't. This wasn't the first time the kid beside him had been stood up. During those times, he'd stayed behind and watched over him without feeling too troubled about it. Now, everything was different. He worried about his wife at home and how he had no way of reaching her. He worried that she might be worried for him.

Dayo looked at the boy who'd fallen asleep with his head on the table. He had pity for him. He was thrust back into one of his childhood memories where he attended a school with no teacher tiers, no school uniforms and only a small chalkboard in his hands. For this boy, it was different and yet, his parents prioritize other things before him.

Three hours later, Adedayo unlocked the door into his home and stepped in. He locked it after himself. His eyes searched for her but there was no sign of her. He took his shoes off by the door and left his briefcase on the couch.

"Joy," he called after he went into the bedroom and she wasn't there. He wondered if she was yet to leave the shop with Mrs. Aderigbe. The thought of that made him a bit unhappy after he saw the clock on the wall read 6:30.

"Dayo?" She called from within the bathroom. A smile appeared on his face at the sound of her voice.

"Yes."

"I didn't hear you come in."

His smile was brighter for a moment. "I just came in." Dayo hadn't heard any sound from the bathroom so his mind never wandered there.

"Oh," she said and the silence between them was like a minute or two before she spoke again. "Do you... do you want to join me... in here?"

He froze then lowered his head a bit shyly. His smile got even wider. "Yes."

Dayo undressed and when he had nothing on him anymore, he gently pulled the door open. The moment their eyes met, both smiled at each other before he walked in and closed the door behind him. There had never been more than one person in the bathroom before because of its narrow structure. He stood in front of her and she put her arms around his neck.

"You're late." She told him. "Did something happen?"

Dayo put his arms around her waist and drew her close to him. "One of my students was left behind. I had to wait until his mum showed up."

Joy reached for the shower switch behind her and turned it on. Dayo shriveled a bit as the cold water touched his body. She laughed at his reaction. He held her even closer and engaged her in a kiss.

Dayo and Joy walked hand-in-hand, their gazes scrolling past every little appearance that seemed out of the usual for them. Even if they didn't have enough to squander or treat themselves like how they would have loved to, they couldn't be bothered. Joy had put on one of her best dresses and Dayo equally did the same. Inside the mall, they spent most of their time window shopping, looking at all the good things that were never going to be theirs. From the adjacent shops that exuded luxury to the escalator, the large supermarket, the pizza and ice-cream joints to the cinema area. To Joy, seeing all this was a first and one of the most fun she'd had.

"Can you wait for me? I want to use the restroom." She told him the moment she sighted the restroom.

"Okay." He replied and waited for her by the side while she went in. A minute of two later, she was back.

"It's nice there." Joy told him, a huge grin on her face. He smiled at her words and they turned away to leave.

"Adesuwa." Joy turned as the hold on her hand prevented her from leaving.

"Excuse me?" She wriggled her hand out of his hold and stared at the strange man who stared back at her with such confusion and surprise in his eyes.

"Where have you been?" He asked as he came closer and put his arms around her. She pushed him away and when she took a step back, Dayo stood in front of her.

"You should leave. You have the wrong person." Adedayo said while Joy looked at him with disgust.

Kenny furrowed his brows and looked from Dayo to Joy and back to Dayo. He had not even the slightest clue why she was acting this way but he wasn't about to leave without her. He reached for his phone in his pocket and went to the gallery of images. He clicked on the one he would like to see and turned the phone to them for their viewing.

"This is you." He said and both stared at the image in front of them. Indeed, it was a smiling image of a woman who looked exactly like Joy. The difference was the makeup, hair extension and prettier clothes she had on. Joy took a step to the side and a few ones forward so she was beside Dayo. She carried the phone from his hand and couldn't stop staring at the image. Could it be... could it be this is her?

"You are Adesuwa... my Adesuwa."

Dayo lifted his eyes from the image he'd been staring at and to the young man in front of him. Joy heard him and at this point, she didn't know how to react. This was sudden. She had always wished to meet or find someone who knew her since she couldn't recall anything but now, there wasn't an ounce of excitement in her bones.

Kenny looked from her to Dayo and back to her. Her reaction was not something he accounted for. He thought she would be happier to see him.

"Something's different." He started. "Don't you recognise me?"

"She has amnesia." Dayo mentioned, surprised that he was able to speak. Right now, he was trying his best to fight off every negative thought. He didn't want to escalate the matter more than it might be.

Kenny stared at her. His eyes dilated with surprise. Then they lowered from her and went left and right. Finally, it all made sense. He had been worried that perhaps she didn't want to come home.

"And... you are?" Joy asked.

"Kennedy—Kenny... your husband."

Both Adedayo and Joy stared at him with the greatest surprise expression they could pull off.

Kenny directed his gaze at Adedayo. "Who are you?"

Dayo forced himself to lower his gaze. His lashes fluttered more times than normal and all the insecurities he felt, all the doubts, they were refreshed. He fought with himself to keep them at bay. His heartbeat picked up its pace. His hand by his side quivered and the last thing Dayo would prefer was to break down in front of this man.

Joy held his hand when he didn't expect. "He is my husband."

Kenny raised a brow and a scoff left his lips. "What?"
