Evan was trembling as he made his way up to his locker, the bell had just dismissed him from his sixth period and he was trying to make it to his bottom-level locker on the second floor as fast as he could, making good progress at the moment as he could see his locker up ahead, maybe he'd make it this time!
He felt overwhelmed with relief when he made it to his locker safely and quickly unlocked it, knowing the combination by heart, being able to do it with his eyes closed if he really wanted to, he knew the beats after all.
Evan was quick to throw his books in and grab the ones he needed, preparing to slam the locker shut but, just as he threw the door, he heard it slam against something and it came back to hit his knee from where he was crouched on the ground from opening the bottom locker. Evan squinted his eyes shut, knowing what he'd find and dreading it.
"Well ow, what's that for?" The voice snickered and kicked he locker door into Evan's knee a second time.
Evan whimpered before he felt himself being lifted by two sets of hands, one on each shoulder, from behind, and being forcefully stood up and turned toward the voice that had addressed him indirectly.
"Hansen, aren't you going to apologize?"
Evan winced and forced himself to open his eyes, "I-I'm r-really sorry, Jared."
"Thanks, think." Jared reached up to ruffle Evan's head, "Now, please introduce yourself to the fellas!"
Jared spun Evan around to face two tall figures with blank faces.
Evan felt his heart lurch when he recognized the two, one of them personally, he couldn't look.
"Jake Dillinger and Connor Murphy, meet my scrub, Evan Hansen- you two are welcome to share him as long as you pay on your end, cool beans?" Jared grinned.
Connor grumbled and chucked a fairly sized bath bomb at Jared.
Jared licked his lips and nodded casually, stuffing the object in his pocket, "Nice."
Evan shook his head, "T-two more?"
"You know I have to rent you out for bath bombs, Ev." Jared patted Evan on the head as if he were a puppy, "It's for your safety, now you won't get hurt by others- just these two if you don't behave- I'm doing you a favor, yeesh, be grateful."
"Why-" Why him though? Evan stole a glance at Connor who returned a cold glare, causing Evan's eyes to dart away.
"Listen, bud, it's just for a week, I get my good stuff," Jared patted the bath bomb in his pocket, "And you get my protection and friendship, it's a win-win, so live a little."
Evan whimpered as Jared gave him a 'friendly' pat on the back.
"He's all yours to do your chores and shit, whatever you want, after school hours for a week, one BaBo ((bathbomb)) per day, m'kay?"
The two boys nodded, elbowing each other with smirks.
"Just don't get yourselves arrested." Jared laughed before saluting, "Later, dorks!" He made his way down the hallway and around the corner, leaving Evan alone with Conner and Jake.
"See, Conner, I told you signing up for Jared's Bathbomb Scrub a Dub Hub™ was a great idea! Now we get this nerd to do shit for us!" Jake laughed.
Connor shrugged, "It's a stupid name but sure."
Evan's breathing was unbalanced and hitching as he fiddled with the hem of his shirt, mentally stressing out to a highly uncomfortable point.
"Let's take this dweeb home." Jake snorted, "He can do my dishes and shit, my ma'll pay me for it and that's worth as much as one set of lush bath bombs so it's a, as Jared say, win-win, right- uh- shoot, what's his name?" Jake squinted at Evan.
"Evan Hansen." Connor put in.
Evan jolted at the sound of his name, He...remembered? He looked at Connor but it was as if Connor was purposefully avoiding eye-contact with him.
"Whatever, I'm calling him mine for now, cos he's mine." Jake smirked.
Connor was seemingly uncomfortable about this nickname but just nodded, "Your house first then?"
"Yeet!" Jake laughed, slugging Connor before turning to Evan, "Come on, mine, let's go." He rammed a shoulder into Evan before walking towards the parking lot.

When reaching the parking lot, Jake glanced at Conmor, who was beside him, and Evan, who was behind them.
Jake began, "Who's car-"
"Mine." Connor responded, which got a head cock from Evan, making Connor wince before looking at Jake.
"Come on! We're going to my house, shouldn't I get him? I can see what he thinks of rock music being pounded into his little ears." Jake laughed maniacally.
Connor shook his head, "You get him at your house, so I'm taking him now."
Jake glared, "Why not let the twink choose? Maybe if you call his name he'll go fetch, throw a bone for him to your car then to test it."
Connor rolled his eyes.
"Come on, twink, who do you choose?" Jake prompted.
Truthfully, Evan wanted neither, he wanted to book it, he was really confused and just wanted to curl up and die right there. Why why was Connor there?
Evan looked at Connor in the eye.
[Earlier that year]
Evan fiddled with his cast as he tried to focus on the work in front of him, sighing when he finally gave up, shaking in worry that he would get a bad score for not knowing how to do the assignment.
Good job, Hansen. He thought You're just ducking up again. Evan couldn't bring himself to actually curse, even mentally, he was only a freshman after all- in a Junior's algebra class nonetheless...
He noticed that he was now chewing on his pencil and cursed when the wood snapped in half in his jaws, causing chips of it to fall in his mouth. He shuttered and spat them out into a tissue, crumpling it up and placing it in a trash section of his bag.
"Did it taste good?" An amused voice sounded beside him.
Evan looked over to see a boy with his hair in a bun beside him.
"O-oh- I just- i-it's a n-nervous habit..." Evan muttered.
"It's fine." The boy shrugged, shuffling through his bag before handing him a pencil.
Evan took the pencil and before the boy let got he leaned forward, "My name is Connor, Connor Murphy."
Evan couldn't help but smile before nodding, "Evan Hansen." He took the pencil and looked down at his work with a frown.
Connor had noticed and scooted closer to Evan, "It's a factorial, you multiply it."
"You're...so smart..." Evan smiled, looking at Connor.
"No, no, no, not at all- but thanks." Connor grinned, "That's probably wrong just so you know."
Evan couldn't help but snort, followed by stifled laughter and a look from the teacher before Connor hushed him with a chuckle and they looked down at their work.
"I know the answer to this one though." Connor turned to Evan's work and began to write a strange code on it as the teacher approached them.
"Sharing is cheating, Mr.Murphy and Mr.Hansen, detention for the both of you, one week through the weekdays, after school."
Evan looked like he was going to faint, but Connor only shrugged, leaning towards Evan when the teacher left, "We can hang out with each other more then."

Evan didn't realize he was still keeping eye-contact with Connor. Connor had skipped those detention sessions, leaving Evan alone and afraid, he hadn't seen the other since, Evan having moved back to a Freshman class when Junior algebra proved too hard- especially considering it wasn't the usual order things were done, this being an extra- it was easier for Evan but he always wondered what Connor had been up to. Why? Why was he here!
"Hey! Stop being gay and get your eyes off Connor, you're supposed to pick me!" With that, Jake swung his leg to kick Evan in the side, causing the boy to fall to the ground with a yelp, clutching his sensitive side as Jake kicked it again. Evan was pretty sure his ribs were about to be broken with the next hit coming before he realized that it never came.
When Evan opened his eyes from wincing he saw Connor with Jake's foot in his hand.
"What the hell, Murphy!?" Jake hissed, off-balanced, "Let go!"
"Get the hell out of here." Connor growled.
Jake looked startled but was also outraged, "What!?"
"I swear to god, Jake, I will snap your foot right off your ankle."
Jake went pale, "Y-you wouldn't."
"Five."
"Connor!"
"Four."
"Why in the hell are you-0
"Three."
"CoNNER!"
"Two."
"OKAY!" Jake yipped and Connor shoved him back so he fell hard on the asphalt before scrambling away, flipping Connor off as he did so.
While Jake was fleeing, Connor turned to Evan, holding a hand out, "You Okay?"
Evan shook his head, shuffling back, "D-don't pull that shit!"
Connor was surprised that Evan actually cussed.
"What was that?" Evan looked dismayed, "Y-you sign up for Jared's hellhole for me a-and then try to help? Wh-why the- why?"
Connor frowned, "I signed up for it because I- wanted to see you." He admitted with a mumble.
Evan gave a confused look as Connor sighed.
"You...make me feel things and- I heard about this and- wanted to beat the hecc out of the people doing it to you but- also just see you again." Connor shrugged, face giving away no emotions but a frown on his face.
"S-so you avoided me in detention s-so you could turn around and pull this stunt?" Evan got to his feet, sounding a bit angry.
"I-" Connor's expression turned to a confused one, "I figured you thought I was some kind of freak, just like everyone else, when you never texted me."
Evan shook his head, "Texted you? But- I don't even have your numb-" Evan's mind went back to the long code Connor had written on his work and slapped his hand over his forehead, "I'm an idiot."
Connor shrugged.
Evan bit his lip, "Why though?"
Connor shrugged once again, "I feel weird? I guess? Around you?"
Evan's face heated up, "Mhm...?"
"And yeah.." Connor shrugged.
"O-okay...well, thanks for-"
"I think I might have a crush on you?" Connor rubbed the back of his neck as his face went a rosy-red.
Evan felt light-headed, "I- uH- like you- t- uH- uM-"
Evan began to fall, unable to even.
Connor quickly caught the boy who looked up at him with a weak smile.
"E-ev?"
"Connor." Evan huffed, hugging the other for the first time, "What the hecc kind of confession is this."
"A pretty screwed up one."
"But aren't we all?"
