Notes (Soulmate AU)

Evan always wore long sleeves. Always. A long-sleeved, blue-striped, polo. He started this after his first day in second grade.
It had been a usual day, Evan was playing with toy trees, pretending they could speak, blocking out the sound of a crash and yelling through pretending it was simply trees falling- for each other. Evan was a big romantic as a second-grader, so much so that he always kept a marker by him.
Evan paused his tree romance story and placed the figures down to look at his arms, exposed from his short-sleeved, sky-blue shirt. He frowned slightly when there was nothing there.
Evan then smiled when he came up with an idea.

"If...soulmate doesn't want to write to me- I'll write to her!" Evan squeaked, picking up his marker and beginning to write on his arm.

Hi! Ma name is Evan. An I'm lik this many,

He was holding up the number 7, but that didn't translate,

I'm shur yur lik a very pwetty lady, okA? I love u, OkA?

Evan grinned at the message, very pleased with it. He then waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Finally, an answer.
A message in red ink slowly appeared below the message that Evan had written on his arm, Soulmates received the messages that were written on their partner, so if one wrote something on their arm, it would appear on the other's arm, and visa versa.

Fuk u >:(

Evan's heart shattered when he red this- he didn't even know what fuk u meant, he just saw the angry face written beside it and began to sniffle, quickly writing back.

Do you love me? Yur making me :(

Evan wrote this on his other arm.
This time Evan got an immediate response.

I don't want a soulmate and I don't want YOU go away D:<

Evan began to cry.

***

The Senior was yet to find his soulmate, but he didn't want to particularly, he was afraid, but lately Evan found himself more intrigued...Evan would be sitting in class, doing his work, and all of a sudden he'd feel a tingle in his arm and slowly pull the cuff of his shirt up to show a drawing on his wrist- a really good drawing nonetheless.
Evan was fine with soulmate messages, he just didn't want any from his showing up in class. His soulmate would cuss him out whenever he wrote anything.
To be fair though, Evan hadn't written a message to them since he was a middle school freshman, he gave up on that and only received messages when he wrote first, always ending in foul language.

Evan checked his arms regularly after school, but he didn't want anyone else to see curse words written on his arms which he couldn't wash off until his soulmate did on their own arm, so he kept the long-sleeves on just incase.

Evan was afraid of his soulmate to some extent...it was as if they didn't want a soulmate...Evan wanted to be on better terms with them- he had to try at least...
He let out a sigh and took the pen he was using to write to begin writing on the arm that didn't have his cast on it, scribbling quickly on it after rolling up the sleeve.

Listen, I realize you don't want a soulmate- I get that, sometimes I don't either...or maybe you just don't want me- regardless, I don't think cussing me out is going to help- and yeah, you haven't done that in years, but you haven't talked to me in years either, all I'm asking is that you just tell me what you want to do, we can get a split if you really want to...but idk,
Sincerely, me

Evan then quickly rolled his sleeve back down and continued his work.

***
By the time lunch rolled around three periods later, Evan had been checking his wrist every passing period, but still nothing- he had kept the writing there just incase though.
Evan hated the idea of soulmates at the moment, but still wanted nothing more than to at least settle things with this person.

"Hansen!"

Evan heard a call behind him and turned to see Connor. Giving a smile to him, he waved before Connor galloped up next to him and came to a halt before falling into step with him, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets, "What's up, dork?" He grinned.

Evan shrugged, "Nothing much, I guess..."

"You paused before much and I...whats actually up?" Connor continued into the cafeteria with the shorter boy.

"I hate my soulmate." Evan muttered.

Connor lifted his eyebrows, "Evan Hansen using the word hate? Call the police folks, this is serious!"

"Stop being sarcastic! I...okay, so I don't hate them, but...they hate me...I think-" Evan chewed on the inside of his cheek.

"Yeesh, that sucks." Connor sat down at an empty table, Evan sitting across from him.

"At least you won't be leaving me anytime soon." Connor smirked.

"Meaning?"

"Alana and Zoe left when they became soulmates, now they just get lunch with each other instead of us too, and Jared ditched us after finding those two guys- Ram and whatever his boyfriend's name was."

Evan nodded slowly, "Well, you've never been contacted at all- and you've never written so...we can be lonely together?" He smiled awkwardly.

Connor smiled back, "Will do, ya' bean."

Evan giggled before his face flushed when he realized he had and he went to study his shoes quickly.

((Okay so from this moment on, this is my current day writing style, that before was stuff I wrote about eh a year and a half ago, maybe longer- no idea what my original plan was for this but I have a new one now))

"I'm sorry that you don't- that your soulmate doesn't write to you, Connor- I, at least I have one, I shouldn't be taking it for granite-"

"No, Evan, please, that's fine...I'm okay with not having one- it means I have freedom to, you know, love who I want." Connor shrugged.

"You'd do that?" Evan looked surprised. He'd only ever heard of a handful of people who went against fate, and most of those relationships ended at some point or another.

"I- don't want a soulmate." Connor shook his head.

The words made Evan stiffen.
He quickly shook the thought out of his head.

"I already like someone so it's not worth it." Connor shrugged.

"Shouldn't you...give it a try?" Evan suggested.

"I don't want to." Connor frowned.

Evan smiled, "I wish I could do that."

"Why can't you?" Connor cocked an eyebrow.

"How do I know it'll work out?" Evan frowned.

Connor thought a moment before smiling, "I'll show you."

"P-Pardon?"

"I'll show you how it can work out." Connor stood up.

"Connor, what are you-"

"Come on, it's lunch, we're allowed off campus, let's skip class." Connor offered the shorter boy his hand.

"What-"

"Come on!" Connor grinned wickedly.

Evan hesitated before getting up and stepping over the bench that was the cafeteria table seating they sat at, grabbing his bag before taking Connor's hand and leading outside the cafeteria, jogging through the hall as Evan squeaked at him to slow down- which he didn't- until they burst through the front doors of the school and into the parking lot.

Connor laughed as they reached his car and hopped in.

Evan paused at the passenger's door, glancing a final time at the school before opening said door and sliding in slamming it behind him.

***

"Connor, we're in the middle of nowhere." Evan frowned.

"No, actually, I know where we are." Connor hummed as he rolled his window down and stuck a hand out, feeling the breeze and ruffle of his dark gray hoodie against his arm.

"Where are we then?" Evan tested.

"It's a surprise!" Connor rolled his eyes as he pulled onto a dirt road.

"Connor-"

"Ta-Da!" Connor announced as they rounded the corner of the road, showing off an extensive orchard with fields of yellow grass and apple trees.

Evan marveled at it.

"Beautiful, right?" Connor pulled over to the side of the road and put the car in park. He then hopped out and rounded the car to the passenger's door, opening it and allowing Evan to step out.

"Thanks." Evan smiled and stepped out, taking a hand that Connor offered.

Connor shut the door and turned towards the field, "Let's hop on top of the car, you can see the whole town from up here." He offered

"How?" Evan chuckled.

Connor thought a moment before releasing Evan's hand. He then overlapped his own hands and bent on one knee, putting the hands over the knee, "Step up and I'll help you."

Evan blinked in surprise but stepped onto the other's cupped hands.

Connor winced before pushing up.

Evan scrambled onto the top of the vehicle.

Connor panted with his effort and stood up, stepping up onto the bar that was located at the bottom of the car.

Evan held a hand out for him and grabbed Connor's wrist, Connor grabbing the other boy's.

The shorter pulled until Connor was able to hoist himself up over the side and collapse on top of the vehicle, panting.

"You alright?" Evan chuckled.

"I'm fine."

***

"And then he said fuck you!"

"How do you know they're a boy?" Connor cocked an eyebrow.

"Well, I- I can't see a girl-"

"Are you saying you can't see a girl cuss like that? How rude." Connor chuckled, "Girls can-"

"I can't see a girl with me." Evan quickly finished.

"Oh." Connor paused, "Oh...sorry..."

Evan shook his head, "It's okay..."

Connor hesitated before putting an arm behind Evan, around his shoulders.

Evan smiled slightly and leaned a head on Connor's shoulders.

"I think I used to think it funny when I heard about people who went against their soulmate bind...I just...didn't think it was possible..."

"Do you...think it might be?" Connor murmured.

Evan smiled and looked up, "You've treated me better than my soulmate ever has, I-" He paused, "You know what. Fuck it."

"Evan! Language!"

"English!" Evan smirked.

Connor paused before bursting out in laughter.

Evan found the laughter contagious and fell down to lay beside Connor, nestling into his side.
He'd denied himself these feelings for so long...it felt good.
He paused and took out a marker.

"I'm going to tell me soulmate to- to heck off."

"Doooo iiiiit." Connor chanted.

Evan rolled up his sleeve and began to write.

With sincerest regards, I don't regret to inform you I found someone much nicer, lovelier, and all together better than you.
F u c k O f f
Sincerely, Me.

He smirked and put the marker back in his pocket- then he hesitated and placed it on the car instead, "I don't need this anymore."

"That's g-" Connor squeaked as he felt his arm tingle.

Evan sat up quickly, "C-Connor?"

Connor rolled his sleeve up to look at the writing that made its way onto his arm.
His face flushed a bright red and Evan slapped both his hands over his mouth.

"Um-"

"Connor-"

"UM-"

Evan looked at it in disbelief, "You...?"

"I- I didn't-"

"You said you never wrote to your soulmate..." Evan whispered.

"I didn't! I don't- I- I didn't want a soulmate, Evan-"

"A-All those vulgar things-"

"I thought-"

Evan scooted away.

"I didn't mean to." Connor shook his head.

"Y-You did!" Evan snapped, "What Excuse do you even have for doing that to someone without even-"

"I liked you!" Connor snapped.

Evan shook his head in confusion.

"God, I-" Connor pinched the bridge of his nose, "This wasn't just some kind of romancing thing, Evan- today- I- I've liked you for two goddamn years and- I-I didn't want a soulmate, I wanted you..."

There was a long,  thick silence.

"...every time my soulmate wrote to me- i-it just reminded me of how I'll never get to decide who I love...and- and that's you, Evan...I just-"

Evan gently put a hand on Connor's.

"I'm sorry, this is stupid, I was a jerk and-"

"You were in love."

Connor's face flushed red.

"I...cant blame you- so was I."
Evan smiled.

Connor looked in disbelief before letting out an exasperated laugh.

Evan intertwined their fingers, "We...have a lot to talk about."

"Yeah, no, yeah we do..."

"I...look forward to it..."
