Chapter 3

From enemies to friends?

Something odd happened today. When I went to school, no one snickered at me or called me names. they just kept staring at me. Some girls even said good morning to me.

Usually, I'm the invisible girl and I liked it that way!! What happened now??

I hurried through the hallways, looking for Lin. As long as she's with me, the students can't touch me. Finally, I spotted her talking to Alex in front of his locker.

"Roxy! You won't believe what happened!!" she screamed as soon as she saw me.

"What do you mean? What happened? and why is everyone staring at me?"

Lin glanced at Alex. She was delighted to see him nod at her.

" Today Jessica asked out Thomas but he refused! He announced that he already likes someone!!" She declared.

I don't know if I should be outraged or devastated, or simply accept that he was way out of my league.

"who...who is it?" I managed to say.

"it's you, dummy!! He said he already likes you!"

WAIT WHAT?!

I didn't know what to say... Was I happy? Yes! Did I feel butterflies in my gut? Definitely!

"Umm... Roxy? You're smiling like a creep," joked Alex. He looked quite amused with the situation.

"Oh come on!! You can't even let me be happy for a second!!" I sighed.

Alex's phone suddenly buzzed then he hurried away. That gave me the chance to just talk one on one with Lin.

"Wow, I didn't know you really had a crush on Thomas!" speculated Lin

" Yeah, I'm sorry I haven't told you..."

Lin smiled at me, then patted my back. "Well look at you now! Thomas Leville likes you!"

It was too good to be true... Did he really like me? Why would he just announce it suddenly? the more I think about it the more suspicious I get.

"Hey!! REX!!" shouted Alex behind me, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I turned around, and to my surprise, Thomas was standing next to him.

"Roxy, we need to talk," said Thomas.

Even though he looked like a nervous tomato wreck, his voice was deeper than usual. He sounded more confident than he looked.

I'm nervous too. I'm not used to this; getting attention I mean. It feels good knowing there's someone out there who you're precious to. But it's stressing me out too much. How should I act? How do we treat each other now? What do we do? those are all questions I've been asking myself from the minute he told me he knows I like him.

I suddenly felt the need to run away.

Driiing driiing! And my savior is right on time again! ok, sorry no more puns.

The bell is officially my best friend!! It's been saving me from a lot of awkward situations lately.

"I'm sorry. I can't right now... The bell... Maybe next time?"

Spoiler alert, that never happened, because "next time" I literally ran away.

I grabbed Lin and pushed her towards the gym where we have P.E together. Later on, I realized I was so caught up talking with Alex and Lin, then Thomas, that I forgot to go to my locker and get our sports uniform.

I could've sworn these past two days were just a wild dream if I wasn't a lucid dreamer. Me forgetting to get my uniform because I was too caught up in drama? I would've laughed if you told me this a few weeks back.

I asked the teacher if I can go get my uniform. But, since I have rotten luck, Jessica asked to get out too, and ran after me.

"Hey! You! Lexy!" she yelled after me.

"It's Roxy," I pointed out, as I opened my locker.

"Whatever. So I was wondering... since when you and Thomas are a thing?"

"Drop it, Jessica. We barely even know each other," I sighed.

She stood there, surprised. I'm not sure whether she's surprised He's not my friend or whether she's surprised I talked back to her. I'm guessing it's the second option.

"Have you heard what he said this morning?" she insisted.

"No, and unless he tells me for himself, I don't want to hear another word about it." I shut the door of my locker, then left her behind me as I hurried to the changing rooms.

When I finally made it to class, Jessica was already back. She glared at me as I walked past her, but she didn't say a thing.

"So what did our wicked witch want this time?" wondered Lin.

" Nothing much, she simply asked about me and Thomas."

Lin arched an eyebrow, a thing I could never do.

"I'm serious that's it! I don't know how I did it, but I was able to shut her up this time!" I smiled proudly at Lin.

"that's my girl!!" she said as she hit me in the back, "When it comes to your social skills, that Alex is a good influence."

The rest of the day was just as odd as it's beginning.

First, I was one of the first to get chosen in P.E. Second, in my other classes, some students were really nice to me and invited me to sit at their table!!

Whatever else Thomas had said in the morning, It made the bullies back off, and those who weren't brave enough to talk to me finally came and talked to me! There were even these two girls at science who apologized for never being able to stand up for me. They said Jessica had some secret info on them and she threatened to tell everyone if they ever tried to talk to me.

Now for the weirdest part of the day; Lunch.

Why is it the weirdest? Simple. As I was happy unwrapping my sandwich, someone came from behind and put his hands on my eyes. I was tempted to grab his arm, twist it, then throw him over, but the giggling of Lin made me realize it must be Alex.

"Guess who?" whispered a voice in my ear. Suddenly I felt my face turn REALLY red. It wasn't Alex. It was Thomas!

"Would you look at that... If she had known it was me, she would have snapped my arm off," laughed Alex behind me. Now that I realized that they pranked me, I was really mad, and my body moved before I could realize what I was doing. I grabbed Alex's right arm, twisted it and stood up to hold it behind him.

"Ouch ouch ouch!! Roxy I didn't mean literally snap my arm off! It was a joke!"

I let him go, but I didn't apologize. Making me think he's Thomas was a jerk move.

Lin started laughing loudly making fun of Alex, shouting "Told you to run if she glares at you!"

I sat down again, but before I could take a bite of my sandwich, Alex interrupted me.

" Roxy! what are you doing?!" asked Alex.

" Trying to eat my sandwich ?" I held up the bread but he looked uninterested.

"That's not what I meant! I mean why are you sitting here! come to sit with us." he showed a table near the entrance with his hand. It was a table full of jocks and cheerleaders. I was tempted to say no, but how can you say no to his puppy eyes?!

Lin wasn't as embarrassed as I was. On the contrary, being the known Ice queen, they were all very happy to be talking to her.  I, on the other hand, was quiet and very shy. Not to mention Thomas was sitting right next to me.

"Roxy!!" the two girls from before, came up to me and handed me a club sign up sheet. what were their names again? I couldn't remember.

" We thought it would be fun if you could join our karaoke club..." stated the first one. She was tall and pale with icy blue eyes. Her brown hair barely reached her shoulders. She had a murderous look in her eyes but her smile was warm, which made her look nice.

" You guys should join too! Lin, Alex, and even Thomas if you want." The second girl spoke. Unlike her friend, she was short with long curly golden hair and big honey colored eyes. her skin was dark and she had a few freckles on her face.

Alex yanked the paper out of my hands and wrote his name. He passed the paper to Thomas, who then passed it to Lin. Now the paper was back into my hands. They were all looking at me.

I really didn't want to, but I also didn't want to feel left out. On that note, I wrote my name and handed the paper back to the blue-eyed girl.

In a day, students stopped bullying me. In a day, I made lots of new friends. In a day, I went from being nobody to somebody. Now in case any of you thought I was being dramatic when I said the Dare was dangerous, here you go. Now you see how a dare can flip your whole life upside down in one day.

Later I had an art class with Lin, Alex, and the blue-eyed girl. Of course, they all decided to sit with me.

"We should all get to know each other before club activities start," said the girl with the pale skin, "I go first. I'm Rachel."

"Oh! I know you! I heard rumors you were dating-" Rachel coughed loudly then glared at Lin. "You know what? Never mind, they're just rumors anyway. I'm Madelin but you can just call me Lin."

" Alexandre Shimmer at your disposal," winked Alex.

I'm not sure whether I should be introducing myself or not, since we were together this morning but I decided to say my full name anyways.

"Um, my name is Roxanna Lonford, but I prefer if you call me Roxy."

Alex looked at me with his open.  "No way!! Your real name is Roxanna? I thought it was Roxy!"

"Wait you really thought Roxy is a name? You must be really an idiot," snickered Lin.

"What's wrong with him thinking it's her real name? I thought so too." Rachel glared at Lin. Whatever Lin almost said really ticked off Rachel.

" I think the name Roxanna is really beautiful," said Alex softly while looking at the floor. He looked up and turned red when he saw our surprised faces, "Uh yeah, I like Roxanna but if you're going to create a nickname for yourself, Anna sounds way better than Roxy."

Alarmed, Lin took my hand, then mouthed the word "run" to Alex. I must've looked pretty angry, because even Rachel was startled, and believe me her own face says murder all the time.

" I don't like that name," I said dryly. But that's a lie. It's just that it was my mom's nickname, and I prefer that it stays hers.

"What's going on here?" spoke a woman in a high pitched voice. " I know I let you chit chat after you finish your projects, but you guys haven't even started

I looked at the blank paper in front of me. "Something Magnifique, something that shows what you're feeling inside!" had said the teacher earlier when she was explaining today's project.

I apologized and started working on my paper. I have worked the whole hour in total silence. I don't know whether I accidentally terrorized my friends or was I too focused on my project but it doesn't matter. I had this idea in my head and I'm intending to finish it.

When I finished, I looked down to my painting and found that I drew a golden plover with a raven right next to it. The background was water colored with all the colors.

Do you know Plovers? They're birds. The sighting of the first  golden plover in Iceland means that spring has arrived, so I see them as a sign of change, happiness, maybe even a sign of hope.  What about Ravens? I see them as a sign of depression and sadness.

Why did I draw these two birds?  I mean, I drew ravens before but never with a bright colored background.  To anyone else, our paintings might seem normal, but to us artist, we know that our painting always contains a code in them.

So why did I paint these opposite birds together? That's a question that will bother me for a long, long time.
