Pick Your Poison, Or Rather Poison Your Pick

BEGIN
Lily, Tally, and Joanna watched the three rooms through the cameras for what seemed like years. They were all seated next to each other, all in a line, switching from screen to screen as they saw the severity of the situation. They watched as they saw just how humane people really are, how true people become when they are exposed to fear and the unknown. They watched as they were in a kind of trance, none of them fully griping the situation, none of them willing to accept where they were or what they had to do. They watched the footage as a distraction, as an excuse not to make a choice, as a pardon for the destiny they had in the very near future.

"I️ can't watch this anymore" lily whispered, closing her eyes. She got up and covered her mouth with one hand, leaning on one of the glass boxes with the other. Joanna followed suit, and got up to look over the boxes once again, searching for clues or a way out in the buttons and metal rods. Tally sat still, watching the screens for a little longer, feeling like the puppet master in a show she isn't controlling, feeling like god watching from above but having no powers. A silent tear fell down her face, and as quickly as it came it was wiped away. Tally then followed Joanna and Lily, and took a stance in front of the three levers.

"Alright" Joanna breathed out deeply, arranging the words in her mind that she was about to say, making sure every option was thought through and correct.  "I'm sure that we can all agree that each of these boxes correlate to the rooms, in the order that they are situated" she began, linking the boxes and screens with her eyes. Lily nodded in agreement, and tally stood still, looking at Joanna, urging her to go on in her silence. "So, whichever lever we pull will affect the room it correlates to. Judging from the note, and the situation we are in, it probably isn't good" Joanna looked around at each of the girls, to get some assurance in her ideas.

"I️ have to say I️ agree" Tally nodded, unfolding her arms and walking over to the fronts of the boxes, running her hand over each one. "So, the only thing left to do is..." Joanna paused, not wanting to say the words. Not wanting them to have affect on her or anyone else.

"Pick a group to risk" lily said, still not making eye contact with the girls, Her eyes still fixated on the keys and levers and boxes. They all stayed silent for a while, waiting for as long as they could, trying to put off the inevitable, trying to make it hurt less.

"Well, who is it going to be?" Joanna said, looking at the other girls, urging them to nominate someone first. "Sarah, Chiara, and Alex in room 'Let'. Saskia, Izzy, and Abigail in room 'The'. Or Olivia, Sophie, and Jemima in room 'Games'."

They all stayed silent.

Each girl looked around awkwardly at each other, waiting for someone to have the courage to speak up. Tally felt a switch inside of her flip, like a candle had been lit, or more correctly, like a candle had been put out. She reached inside of her and pulled out her emotions and put them to the side.

"The weakest" she stated with confidence. Before anyone could object, say another word, or even begin to think about what she said, Tally launched for the middle handle, grasping it tightly and feeling her knuckles go white. She glared at Saskia, Izzy, and Abigail through the screen for one last time, before pulling the lever towards her, with one swift movement. Tally was frozen there, with her hand on the lever and her body in stance as she watched the people in the screen.

The other girls didn't have time to be shocked or angry or scared, they rushed over to the screen, watching carefully each room, examining any changes they think they may have seen. Suddenly Saskia coughed, and then Izzy, and then Abigail, soon enough the camera picked up on a thick gas entering the room under the slit of the door. They all watched, mortified, as the three girls started having fits and violently shaking on the ground.

"NO! STOP! TALLY STOP! PUT THE LEVER BACK! SAVE THEM! SAVE THEM!" Lily screamed through tears, she rushed at tally and ripped her hand off of the lever and rammed it back into its original state, but it changed nothing. She attempted it again and again, but nothing changed. She watched in hatred and disgust as the girls on the screen started moving slower, and slower, and slower, until eventually they stopped all together. The room fell silent, a silent as if it were a deafening noise, a silent so loud that it engulfs you and takes you hostage, a silent that echoed throughout the room in the most sinister way, a silent that would muffle your screams so no one would ever hear you.

"...Poison your pick..." Tally whispered in realisation, shocked with what she had done.

Lily dropped to her knees, defeated, in pain, in agony. She whimpered into the floor, whispering their names to herself, convincing herself that they were ok. Joanna sat there, hypnotised by the screen. Tears rolling down her face without her feeling them, without knowing what was happening, without blinking or breathing or her heart beating. Tally stood back, standing up straight and fixing her posture, her hand shaking with the realisation of the death that she has on her shoulders. The screens jumped alive, as all three doors creaked open, the girls heads cracking around towards them, some of them rushing out into the halls, and some taking caution. The gas from the room seeped out of the room and disappeared, so only the lifeless bodies of the girls remained, sprawled out on the floor. Tally took the key from the lever, and held it tight in her hand.

"Whose coming with me" Tally said, toying with the key. Joanna stood up slowly, and wiped away the tears that soaked her face.

"I️ am" she Said, turning to look at Tally, she puffed out her chest and took a deep breath. Then walked over to tally, snatching the key from her hand. Tally motioned lily to follow, reaching out to take her hand, but lily swatted it away. Lily rose from the ground with anger radiating from her skin, her face drenched in water. She simply glared at Tally, and knocked her shoulder on the way past. Tally followed them both, feeling sick with guilt. Joanna poked the key through the door, and pushed it out to the schools opening. The darkness lifted slightly, and the three of them rushed out into the open area, seeing the empty and bare reception entrance to the school, only to be greeted by the other 6 girls from rooms Let and Games: Alex, Sarah, Chiara, Olivia, Sophie, and Jemima. A shock of terror ran through the girls at the sight of the others, but after the fear had subsided, they all sprinted to one another, becoming a concoction of emotions.
