High Ground
Sophie was the first one to reach the top floor of the building. She was light headed and the intense light felt blinding on her eyes. Soon after her Sarah, Abigail and Olivia followed, panting after the sprint. Sophie looked intently around for Joanna's scream. A part of her thought that they would enter the top floor to see nothing but a bloody mess covering the ground, and another part of her hoped that Joanna's scream was simply a plea for attention. Sophie heard another shriek pierce her ears, and noticed that it came from the rocky landing over the fence balcony.
Quickly, the four girls rushed over to the railing and looked at Joanna. She was buckled down onto her knees and was leaning over the side, crying into the fall below her. Olivia thought of what she could be cowering over, but those passing thoughts were quickly over run with fears of another death at hand.
"Joanna?" Olivia called in a soothing and croaky voice. Olivia was taken back by the unfamiliar noise of her own voice, but controlled it none the less.
Joanna moved her head around slowly, making eye contact with Olivia, then turning to Sarah and Sophie who were at either of Olivia's sides, then swiftly back to Olivia. Her red cheeks were shimmering with tears and her eyes seemed brighter than they had ever been, illuminated by the salty water trapped in them.
"Joanna what are you doing over there? Whats wrong? Why'd you scream?" Olivia questioned, she felt tears welling up inside herself for no particular reason. Her emotional integrity had suffered greatly these past hours.
"I... I.... Its...." She spat only letters through her hectic breathes and sobbing. Her body was moving in snapping motions as she weeped, turning her head back to the fall. She closed her eyes softly and let out a yell. A noise filled with so much pain and grief and shock that was no recognisable noise to Olivia or Sarah. Her hands clutched the edge of the landing making her knuckles turn a ghostly white.
"Izzy..."
That was all she could muster up. Just the name of loss itself. Liv and Sophie looked fearfully at each other, and were locked in a silence, both of them too scared to move. Sophie heard a soft crackling noise to her right and quickly shot her head around to see what it was. Sarah had somehow made her way over the fence and was slowly walking over to Joanna, trying to be as quiet as possible with the rocks shifting underneath her feet. Abigail was following suit, only just landing over the railing and onto the pebbles. Sarah put a finger over her mouth and motioned to Sophie to keep talking.
"Jo, what do you mean 'Izzy'?" Sophie asked, speaking the first thing that came to mind. Her throat was dry and her words sounded husky as they left her mouth.
"Izzy.... Is fucking dead" Joanna managed to say, she had started hyperventilating and her words were filled with cold air. "Do you hear me? Dead, she's..... down there"
Joanna never stopped looking away from over the edge, half of her torso was now leaning over the side, putting her slightly off balance in the breeze. Sarah was only a meter or so away from Joanna when a blaring static shot through the speakers of the school. The high ringing noise caused everyone to cover their ears in pain in an effort to block out the noise. It lasted for only a few seconds and when it stopped it was dead silent.
"Hello, id like to play a game... a Queenwood game" A familiar voice stated in a mocking tone. Joanna had shot up from her knees and was at full alert, now turning around to see how close Sarah and Abigail had gotten without her realising. "I've let you had a few hours rest, you should all be very grateful for that, but now you're going to have to continue with the game. Theres 8 of you left, isn't that curious? I was expecting less at this point. I guess you're all stronger than I had expected."
The doors that led to level 5 snapped shut at that moment, a loud click signifying a trap. Sophie quickly ran over to a door and tried to open it, but to no avail. She turned around shaking her head from side to side, and ran back to Olivia who was leaning on the Railing for support.
"But 8? 8 doesn't work for my game" The voice laughed, and in the laugh the voice altering device seemed to squeak, letting a burst of the real persons laugh through. No one could recognise it, it sounded like a devil had met with an angle and was joking at its existence. "No no, I need 7. ONLY 7. So, it seems like we have a bit of a problem on our hands, don't we?" The voice asked, you could hear it sneering through the words It spoke. "The power lies within you, who do you think deserves to die? Chose wisely... because in the end it IS just a game."
And with that, the speakers shut off and the voice was gone, leaving the girls with a deathly commandment and distrust in the air. Every girl looked at every other, subconsciously distancing themselves from anyone around them. Isn't it crazy how you can disregard everything you know about a person in times of desperation? Like vines crawling up the legs of the girls around them, engulfing them with fear and a new diamond persona.
"Im not gonna lose this fucking game" Jolted Abigail. She grabbed Joanna by the shoulders and pushed her to the edge of the landing, attempting to throw her off and into the fall. Joanna - who was shocked to say the least - instinctively grasped hold of Abigial's arms, her blue eyes wide with fear and her survival instinct kicking in, and swung herself back around to the solid ground. Abigail grabbed hold of Joanna's wet hair and yanked it downward, causing her to let go for just long enough. Abigail flung Joanna off the edge, with Joanna desperately trying to grab any part of Abigail's uniform that she could. Her finger tips missed Abigail dress collar with an inch between them, and fell backward.
Her body plummeted through the air, cutting the wind as she grew closer and closer to the red soaked concrete. She looked as Abigail watched her fall from above her, and everything moved in slow motion. Her hair stuck to her face and her hands were still outstretched, begging to hold onto anything that may appear. She realised that this was the last thing Izzy would have seen, her final moments was what Joanna was feeling right now. It almost gave her a sense of comfort as her feet became lighter in their places. Her eyes became shallow and tight as her back collided with the ground, a loud snap vibrating through her body. Her head smashed to the floor shortly after, letting fresh warm blood mix with the dried blood of Izzy who lay before her there. A short few seconds remained in Joanna's life, her vision becoming white and fuzzy. The last thing she saw as her head rolled to one side (to accommodate for the gaping crushed hole in her skull), was Izzy's feet leaving further and further away, as her body was dragged by a tall, blonde haired girl, a joker like smile carved into her face. As Joanna took her final breath, Izzy's body disappeared into the shadow, letting Joanna's last thought to be of the girls pearly white eyes staring back at her.
