Chapter 16
Toast was happy to wake up early that morning, the sun having yet to rise and no light coming in through the windows. He was nervous however, especially as he walked down the hall to where he knew Ghost would be, waiting, and watching the sunrise.
Toast was quiet as he walked in, standing in the doorway for a moment to simply look at Ghost. He looked so breathtakingly peaceful, sitting there with his morning coffee, and looking out the window. He was wearing a very loose fitting hoodie, one that's sleeves came down far enough to cover his hands, his sleeves sticking out from the sides of his coffee mug he held with both hands. His legs were once again tucked up beneath him, leaning an elbow on the armrest, his eyes closed as he knew it wasn't time for the sunrise yet.
Toast smiled softly, the sight of Ghost calming his nerves. He looked so incredibly at piece, and it made Toast feel just as relaxed.
"Hey.." He spoke softly, smiling at Ghost who quickly opened his eyes and turned to face him. Ghost gave a small smile in return.
"Good morning.." He kept his voice quiet, and Toast could hear the lingering sleepiness in his voice. "What are you doing up so early?"
Toast just shrugged, walking over and quietly sitting down next to him on the couch, looking out of the window while Ghost looked over at him. After a moment, Toast felt a weight on his shoulder and smiled as he knew that Ghost's head rested there, also looking out of the window.
They sat there for quite some time before they finally saw a sliver of the sun just over the buildings surrounding them, Toast looking down at Ghost on his shoulder to find him smiling widely at it. A smile settled over Toast's own lips, turning back to the window as they watched it slowly come up further.
Ghost was watching in awe as it raised fully, though Toast could only see him, and how absolutely beautiful that he looked, leaning on the edge of his seat to see it better, despite having obviously watched the sunrise many, many times before.
"I told you it was breathtaking.." Ghost whispered, grinning as he turned to look up at Toast, blushing as he found Toast already looking back at him.
"Yeah.. It was. But I saw something took my breath away far more than the sunrise did.." He chuckled, leaning into Ghost. Ghost blushed farther at that, nervously chuckling himself.
"Wh-what do you mean by that..?" He stumbled to talk. Toast sighed.
"Sir-Ghost, I've... Been meaning to talk to you about something. About.. Well, about the case." Toast managed out. Ghost's eyes widened. "Do you.. Remember what I told you..?"
"I-I do.." Ghost mumbled, blushing and turning away sadly. "A-and I love you too.. You're.. A great friend of mine, Johnny.." He forced himself to call Toast his friend, despite how much it hurt him.
"That's.. That's not how I meant it, Ghost. I love you.. Far more than a friend would. I am in love with you, and it's taken me far too long to realize this.." He spoke softly, surprisingly getting the words out without too much problem. "I've always known myself that I liked both women and men.. And, well, I'm sure you don't feel the same sir... I just wanted you to know. Because with our work-"
"Stop." Ghost choked out, tears gathering in his eyes. "Please, stop.."
Toast did as Ghost said, squeezing his eyes shut as he became near tears as well, bracing himself for rejection.
"Do you.. Really mean that, Johnny..? Do you truly.. L-love me?" Ghost looked up at him carefully, and Toast slowly opened his eyes, nodding as a tear fell.
"I'm sorry, sir.." He whispered, positive that now Ghost would hate him. He'd be forced to leave, leave P.I.E., leave their apartment.. Leave Ghost.
When Ghost let out a small laugh however, Toast was confused. Was Ghost going to taunt him..? Surely he wasn't someone who would do that.. Right?
"How long?" Was the only thing Ghost could say, the tiniest of smiles on his face.
"We-well.. It.. Took me
Quite some time to realize.." He mumbled in reply, and Ghost threw his arms around Toast.
"Do you know how long I've felt the same, Johnny..?" He questioned, tears falling from his eyes one by one, until his cheeks were completely stained by them. "Almost ten years by now.. Then, you found Trudy.. It broke my heart, every day." He muttered, and Toast held him tightly, both of them crying.
"I'm sorry, sir, I'm so sorry.." He whispered, and Ghost just shook his head.
"Don't be.. Oh, please don't be. You, you love me now.. Don't you?" He looked up at him, his tiny smile still showing through his tears. Toast's eyes went wide, and he quickly nodded his head, resting a hand on Ghost's cheek and pulling him into a quick and loving kiss, that Ghost barely had time to return.
"Yes, Ghost, I love you so much.. I love you so much.." He repeated, kissing his forehead, and his cheeks, and everywhere he could reach.
"I love you too!" Ghost cried, and the two held each other tightly, tears still falling as they shared more little kisses, happy to be in each others' arms.
They lay on the couch together now, Ghost laying on Toast's chest with his face hidden in his shoulder, Toast pressing tiny sweet kisses to Ghost's head.
"I've always loved to be in your arms Johnny.." Ghost mumbled, kissing his shoulder. "I feel so at peace here.. Like I could die in your arms..."
Toast smiled at that, pulling Ghost up to once again kiss him softly, his arms tightly wrapped around him while Ghost returned the soft and sweet kiss, filled with so much love for the other.
They were both very happy to finally be together.
