The gift
A collab I did with SolangeloDemigod

Will had been avoiding Nico for at least a week, and Nico isn't really sure why. He thought they had a relatively good bond, that Will liked being around him.
It was annoying, but it was also upsetting.
If Will didn't like him, why didn't he just say something? Why didn't he tell Nico the truth? That would hurt a lot less then him blantly walking away when ever he saw Nico enter a room.
Not knowing was the thing driving Nico insane. If he knew what was upsetting Will, he could do something about it. Was it his looks? How sarcastic he normally is? The playful insults he would throw at Will from time to time? Because he could change those things. He couldn't change what he didn't know.
He was debating whether he should ask or give up on Will entirely. If the blonde didn't want to be around him, why should Nico hurt himself trying to get his attention?
Because you like him, a voice in the back of his mind reminded. And it wasn't a lie. He had developed a crush on the blonde. Making this silent treatment all the more painful.
Nico tried though, he tries ignoring Will, tries not giving him a second look in their classes together, and tries to not constantly wonder why Will doesn't give two shits about him anymore. But it's hard.
Because now that he knows that he cares about Will more than Will cares about him, all he wants to do is cry when he sees him and so much as thinks about him, and recently, Will is the only thing he can think about. He can't help the dark thoughts hovering in the back of his mind, and it's tiring. He wants to talk to Will, he really wants to, but he's scared of the answers he'll get. He really doesn't want to lose his friendship with Will, and he figures he should at least try to save what little they have left.
So, he goes to his other friends, Percy and Jason, for advice.
"Sorry man, I don't know," Percy shrugged, yet his voice clearly wasn't genuine. The green eyed boy seemed a bit antsy, Jason having to shoot him looks every so often as if to try and keep him in line.
"Yeah, maybe he's just having an off day," Jason suggested, a nervous smile covering his features.
"An off day? More like an off week," Nico sighed and shook his head. "Nevermind.."
"Maybe you should, like, talk to him," Percy said, his voice going up at the end as if he were asking a question, and Nico scoffed.
"Yeah, I would if he gave me the time of day," he grumbled, standing up and picking his bag, "you guys are no help, but thanks anyway." He leaves the lunch room, ignoring the smiles he gets from Percy and Jason, and goes to the library, planning on distracting himself by reading.

Finally, Nico had enough. Enough of the silence. Enough of being constantly ignored as if he didn't exist. He had become so used to that before he met Will, but not anymore. Will had taught Nico he didn't deserve to be ignored or treated like he didn't matter and he shouldn't let anyone get away with that. Not even Will himself.
The weirdest thing is, Will texted Nico first. He asked if Nico could come over. Nico didn't know what to do. Why was Will suddenly paying attention to him? Was this all a misunderstanding? Was he going to explain why he was ignoring him? Nico wasn't sure. But he was determind to confront Will on his behaviour, and agreed to show up at his house.
And when he did get to Will's house, he had a whole speech prepared that he highly doubted he would use. He marched up the steps and knocked on the door, his arms crossed as he waited. And, surprisingly, was found that he felt completely furious by Will's smiling face, bright and excited, as he answered the door.
"Neeks!"
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Will's smile falters a bit.
"What?"
"You ignore me for weeks than call me over? You can't just talk to me when you feel like talking, you need to take my feelings into consideration. Do you know how you made me feel?" Just like that, the rage slowly starts wearing off, making him feel sad again as he looked at Will, his face showing no emotion, his lips pursed.
"Nico, listen, I'm sorry but I needed to do-"
"So whatever you were doing required you to completely ignore me?! You know what Will? You're a jerk! You tell me a bunch of crap about not letting people walk all over me and you think you can do it?! Well it's not gonna happen!" Nico got angry again, snapping whatever came to mind. Will went quiet again. He nodded slightly.
"Okay.. just.. come in," the blonde said, sounding suddenly dull and serious. The exact opposite of how Will normally is. Nico hesitated before nodding and walking in.
Nico's arms were crossed and he was confused as Will led him through the house. And when they reached the back door, Will opened it and gestured for Nico to go first, and Nico did, gasping when he saw the decorations set out in his backyard and a bunch of his friends gathered around chatting.
He looked over at Will with a frown.
"Happy birthday," he mumbled, moving his head in a 'follow me' type way as he walked out to one of the tables and grabbing a wrapped box, handing it to Nico, "I got you a gift, if you aren't to angry to open it."
Nico blinked, staring at the gift in his arms. He almost said "It's not my birthday" until he thought for a second. It was, indeed, 28th of January. His birthday. He glanced up at Will, dumbstruck.
"I planned this whole thing for you," Will grumbled, his voice bitter. "I know you haven't really celebrated your birthday since you were a kid, and I wanted to surprise you, but if you hate me that much you shouldn't bother opening it." With that, he shrugged and walked away.
Nico looks down at the package Will had given him, smiling softly but also feeling like a complete jackass. Slowly, he opens it, seeing a neckless with a locket attached to it inside. He picks up the neckless, opens the little frame, and sees a picture of the both of them on each side. He chuckles quietly, moving his eyes from the pictures back to the box in his hand, and sees a slip of paper at the bottom.
He takes it, turning it over to reveal the words 'will you be my boyfriend', and feels as if all the oxygen has been sucked from his lungs, his heart pounding and his cheeks heating up.
Nico looks up quickly, scanning the yard for Will to no avail, and idly wonders if he had gone back inside.
He hates you, and Nico pouts because he knows it's probably true.
Nico slipped the necklace back into the box, along with the paper, and held the box to his chest. He felt like an ass. Will planned this whole thing for him. And knowing from experience, Will was horrible at keeping secrets. That's why he was avoiding him. And Nico accused him of being like all those jerks who had mistreated Nico in the past.
"Will?!" Nico rushed back inside. He scanned the room, but the blonde was no where to be found. He rushed back outside, scanning the streets. The cars of guests from the party filled the streets.. except Will's.
"No.." he mumbled, pulling out his phone and calling Will. No answer. Tears burned in Nico's eyes as his hands started to shake. "Please.." he called again. No answer. "Will please.." he whimpered, beginning to spam his crush with texts.
Will please
Unread.
I'm sorry! I'm so so sorry!
Unread.
I love you too..
I love you, please..
Unread.
Hot tears ran down Nico's cheeks as he clutched the box to his chest. Now Will really was ignoring him. He was mad. Of course he was. Nico had insulted him horribly after he had went through all of this to make Nico happy. He whimpered, sinking to his knees and hugging the box to his chest. The last gift Will would ever give him.
Will was Nico's first true friend. One of his few crushes. The one he thought wouldn't leave him with a broken heart. Yet here he was, holding a gift with words that now mean nothing to the person who gave it to him, crying with his heart throbbing in his chest. What did he expect? To find his prince charming and live happily ever after? Like in fairytales? Well, this wasn't a fairytale. This was real life. And in real life, there aren't happy endings.
Nico was pulled from his miserable thoughts by the sound of music. He glanced down, slowly realizing it was his ringtone. He picked up his phone to see who was calling him. He then froze, staring wide eyed at the phone screen.
It was Will.
