We spent a great deal of the night - well, what we thought was the night, there was so much jungle it was near impossible to tell - watching Emma try and figure out the map infant of her. I lay in Killian's protective grip humming our song. "You remember?" Killian asked after a while and I looked at him with a quizzical brow.
"Of course, do you?" I asked.
"How could I not" he chuckled kissing my hair. "I missed you" he mumbled over and over as if it was so incredibly important that he told me now, like I might slip out of his grip again.
"I always miss you" I replied and let my eye close a little as I felt Killian's warm presence. I had missed this, being close to him again. I didn't want to move but I could feel Emma watching us, a glare in her sharp eyes. But Killian seemed to ignore it, so I tried to do the same but I glanced up for a moment and Emma quickly looked back down at the parchment.
"My name is Emma Swan" she said.
"It's going to be more complicated than that" I huffed and Killian rolled his eyes in agreement. I partly listened to Mary Margaret, Regina, Emma and David talking about who Emma really was but I was transfixed on Killian's smooth hook. It was cold but the heat from the jungle warmed the metal a little, but not quite enough to make it comfortable against my skin.
"Come on, you don't need to be embarrassed to say it" Mary Margaret.
"Say what?" Killian spoke up pulling me back to reality from my thoughts as I looked up from his hook.
"The S word" Regina sneered with a roll of her eyes.
"Emma is supposedly the 'Savior' who frees us all from this endless torment" I explained and Killian pulled a sceptical face.
"I'm the... Savior" Emma said after a moment's pause and we all waited in anticipation for the map to do something. Nothing. "I don't get it, I said I'm the Savior. There is nothing I've denied more than that" Emma complained.
"Well obviously there is something" I said and stood up dusting down my trousers and flipping my hair over my shoulder.
"No, it's okay. We'll figure something out" Mary Margaret promised and I tried my best to pull a supportive smile but I had already worked out what Emma need to believe and there was little any of us could do about going to convince her the truth.
"Adeline?" Killian's ruff voice said from behind me, he too having gotten to his feet and joined the conversation.
"Mmm..."
"Do you want to say something?" he asked. I shook my head but he raised an eyebrow. Dam it this man was good. "No..." His brow remained.
"If it's something that will help then please tell us" Emma begged and I shook my head. "Why not!?" she screamed at me and I felt an arm snake around my waist as I flinched away.
"Because. Because no matter how much I want to tell you how to unlock that dammed map I can't. And neither can anyone else"
"Because...." David prompted and I shot him a glaring look.
"Because this is Pan, and it's what he does. He plays mind games and he hurts people... because its fun. I know how that map works but I can't tell you. Just... Pan doesn't care who you are the Savior, Emma, any of that. He cares about what you are" I said trying my best to tell her but not tell her the answer she needed but clearly no one else understood what I meant.
"You seem to know Pan very well for someone who hated him" David said rising his own eyebrow at me.
"Yeah, I spent a hell of a long time here with the demon to know. I may hate him, but there is no escaping his game. Particularly here."
"Stop with the cryptic codes and tell us what to do!" Emma yelled.
"Fine!" I snapped back surprising myself a little as well as everyone else "I'll tell you. You need to stop being so self absorbed and think about what people are saying when they are trying to help" I snapped.
"Self absorbed? Why am I the self absorbed one. You say you know the map, then unlock it"
"I can't" I snapped again. Then my voice lowered into near a growl "This is Neverland. The key is through precision and believe. Not through snobbery, Savior" I snapped before storming off into the jungle. to that far though just enough to hear Killian snap at the group
"See what you've done. She doesn't want to be here, she is here for you lot. And look what you've done."
"Adaline?" Killian asked and I stuck my head out from behind the tree with a miserable look. He sighed and matched over pulling me into his arms. "Do you want to talk about it?" He asked and I shook my head biting my head into the collar of his leather jacket. "Okay" he whispered and didn't press me for any more information. "Come on" he said after a moment of just holding each other.
"Why?" I asked letting go and he rolled his eyes. "Regina used magic and now we have to follow this map through the jungle" he explained and I shook my head desperately.
"No...No" I breathed heavily. I could feel the panic rising up in my chest, threatening to burst out of my body and spill on ground I was stood on.
"I know, but you wanted to help them. You've made it this far, the jungle can't be as bad as you think" he said. I raised a sceptical eyebrow but nodded slowly all the same. I would do it. For Henry. For Killian. For my own sanity. If I continued to let Pan's presence scare me then I wouldn't get anything done.
"Come on then, I should probably apologize to Emma.." I muttered and Killian chuckled "what?"
"My Adaline, unable to be mad or hate any one. No matter how horrid they are to her" he said. I rolled my eyes and stretched up in my toes to kiss him before sprinting off into the jungle after the others.
We walked for a while until Emma stopped right in front of me and I collided with her back, my nose scrunched up and I tried to rub the pain away. "Sorry" I mumbled and I could hear Killian's chuckle behind me as Emma glared at me.
"Stop" Regina snapped and I saw that she was staring into the jungle that was just as dark and terrifying as I remember. "Pan's here, I can feel his smugness" she said and I looked back down the line to Killian who's face fell a little.
"Shall we? While we still have the element of surprise on out side" David asked pushing past her and pulling out his sword making me roll my eyes.
"Careful" Killian muttered to Emma as he passed her to stand next to me "He may look like a boy, but he's a bloody demon."
"Killian" I whispered and froze where I was. There were tears welling up in my eyes and I could do nothing to stop them from falling silently.
"Adeline, it will be fine" he promised and took my head in his hands forcing my expressionless eyes to look at him. "It will be fine" he said and I nodded before letting him kiss me and pull me through into the clearing. I knew Killian was lying in order to make me feel better. There was no way that things would be fine. The others had already entered and it was clear that Pan and his lost boys had been here, the clothes and camp had obviously be habituated recently.
I shook from head to toe but somehow I managed to place one foot in front of the other. "No one is here" Mary Margaret sighed "Maybe you spell was wrong, Regina."
"Yes, blame it on me, again" Regina retorted.
"Pan's camp moves.... he's here" I whispered and the others looked at me curiously before lapsing into a tense silence.
"Guys...Hold on... its that?" Emma asked lowering her sword. I spotted what she had seen on a ridge just above us. Someone... was wearing Henry's clothing. Could it be him? "Henry!" Emma cried out and the figure turned to face us. My knees buckled and I was only just able to remain standing because of Killian's support as I hid behind him. Peering over his shoulder I watched as Pan walked across the ridge, a smug yet disappointed grin on his awful face.
"Hi Emma" he said.
"Where the hell is Henry?" Emma growled but Pan brushed off her question with his own words.
"Your broke the rules, that's not fair. Bad form. I expected more form you, Captain" Pan teased and Killian's hand tended around mine.
"Aye, and you'll get it" he snapped back. I took a deep breath in order to steady myself. Pan clearly hadn't seen me yet which confused me a little. But I remembered what I had promised earlier. I would not let him win.
"Give Henry to me" Emma ordered her tone authoritative but I could hear the tremble in it a little.
"Sorry, can't" Pan shrugged "don't you know? Cheaters never win" he said. That did it.
I stepped out from behind Killian a determined look on my face. I saw the lost boys gather around us and I sneered at Pan who's eyes widened in surprise. "Adeline..." he whispered only just loud enough for us to hear him.
"Hello, Peter" I smiled back, but not kindly. "Did you miss me?"
