Chapter 9 | The falling under
After the awkward encounter with Patricia about her seemingly absent emotions, Shadow opened the door to the bunker.
Shadow sighed and stated "it's eleven fifty eight so because of the excitement of today's calamity I think it would be better if you called your families and stayed here tonight," in a commanding tone.
"Okay it would be safer since we just did get shot at in the street!" I said in agreement as me and Shadow turned to Michael and Patricia.
"Yes" Michael chimed in response to Shadow's request as all the attention was focused on Patricia.
"Fine" Patricia responded in an annoyed tone, that seemed to be the first emotion I had heard from her since the shooting at Cafe Du Pierre.
Shadow nodded and then set about making three makeshift beds for us using the medical beds and then he gave us each a white material blanket.
Meanwhile I called my Dad but as expected he didn't pick up, so instead I sent a text message instead 'Hi dad staying over at Patricia's house tonight I'm going to be home tomorrow. See you later!'
Patricia then called her mother and left a voice mail saying "sorry mom not going to be home tonight, I'm staying at a friends house love you lots bye!"
We all then decided to go to sleep in our makeshift beds. I rolled over under the blanket but I couldn't sleep, so I whispered to Patricia, "Patricia... Trish... Trisha" I tried all the names I could think of that she hated.
"What" she moaned back.
"Can you sleep? I can't" I replied back to her snappy question.
"Yes I was sleeping fine until I was rudely woken up by you!" She snapped back in a harsh whisper.
"Oh sorry it's just I'm scarred to sleep it's been hard to sleep ever since this nightmare began" I replied back with an uncontrollable edge of sadness.
Patricia was silent for a second. "Try singing a song in you're head!" Patricia replied finally.
"What song though?" I asked Patricia.
"Do you remember my fifteenth birthday?" Patricia responded after a small pause.
"Yes" I responded a smirk creeping onto my face.
"Sing the song that played on the radio on that day! The song that we sung along to, horribly" Patricia replied as we both shared a giggle.
"Thanks" I said back.
"You're welcome now goodnight" Patricia yawned back.
"Goodnight" I responded as I started to sing a melodious tune in my head and fell into a deep sleep.
I awoke the next day to a dimly lit bunker and Patricia sat on the bed next to me as she said, "good morning and don't worry no one been looking at you when you slept!"
My stomach rumbled loudly like a lion, I was severely hungry and with food not being a major priority in Shadow's base he handed me Patricia and Michael a protein bar and waited for the three of us to finish eating.
When we finished Shadow decided we all should go home and and Michael should inform his family and friends he would be 'away' for some time.
We all got into his van and Shadow drove us down many streets and eventually we stopped and Shadow asked Michael to get out, he did and thanked Shadow for dropping him off near his home.
The engine roared back to life and we carried on driving until eventually we stopped again and this time Patricia got out as I realised that we now had arrived a short while away from Patricia's home.
Patricia gave a slight nod of thanks to Shadow as she closed the van door and left presumably to walk home.
Me and Shadow then continued to drive and as the silence grew most deafening he asked "is she trustworthy?"
"Who? Patricia?" I responded in curious yet timid tone back to Shadow.
"Yes she seemed isolated like she didn't even care about the killing game. She almost seemed absent" he replied with a clear edge of seriousness.
"Honestly...I thought she seemed almost emotionless but I think I managed to get some emotion from her" I replied with a slight smile to myself.
"Do you believe that she can be trusted?" He questioned with little concern for my feelings, but that's probably why he asked it. He feared I wouldn't ask myself and assume it was safe to be around her but asking my opinion was sensible because I knew Patricia better than Shadow did, considering they had only met yesterday!
"Yes...I do...I trust her implicitly!" I retorted back in an unsure tone.
"You seem unsure but if you truly believe that she can be trusted then I guess I'll have to believe in her too" Shadow responded reluctantly.
"Thank you" I replied making me wonder: did Shadow trust me that much?
However the more important question was, could Patricia really be trusted? If I was wrong I could be risking both mine and Shadow's lives! Was it worth the risk? I truly hoped so.
Within a short time we had arrived at a street near my house and Shadow stopped the van, he then waited for me to get out, so I did. I thanked him for dropping me off but before I could close the door Shadow said "come back to this spot at three p.m. sharp I want you to be there when I put Michael under, can you do that?"
"Yes I-I will" I responded as I closed the door and walked towards my home.
The walk home was relentlessly long as fast as I walked I still felt tired, it was probably due to the lack of food I had eaten that day.
Eventually, I reached my home and unlocked the door myself using the spare key, I had to do this because I had left my key at home yesterday and because my Dad was at work.
When I got inside my house I ran straight upstairs and turned on the water to run a hot bath, when the bath was filled I soaked in the warm water coated in a layer of bubbles.
I don't know how long I was in the bath but when I got out it was ten twenty six a.m. and I decided to make a light breakfast consisting of two buttered slices of toasted bread and a coffee with sugar and milk.
It took me thirty minutes to finish my small break fast an then I decided to do something boring and mundane.
Eventually, I decided to watch TV in the living room alone. Most of what I watched was re-runs of old TV shows long since cancelled but they filled a gap that would otherwise be left vacant if the broadcast stations did not re-run programs.
After watching TV for about three hours I decided to do something, anything...
I thought to myself that I should be productive so I placed the taser, PTD and my phone on charge. Then I went up to my room and picked out some clothes to wear: a pair of black jeans, a white t-shirt, a pair of black boots that covered my ankles and had a small heel and I also wore a grey plain raincoat.
After getting dressed it was now two thirteen p.m. and I had about forty five minutes until Shadow would pick me and Michael up so I could be there when Shadow administered the temporary coma educing drug to Michael.
But since the shooting at Cafe Du Pierre I didn't feel safe walking down the streets and being on my own in general, so I decided to gather my things; phone, PTD, pocket knife and taser.
Then I grabbed an energy bar from the cupboard and placed that in to my coat pocket. So with my stun gun in my front right coat pocket for easy removal, my pocket knife in my back jeans pocket, my PTD in my front left coat pocket for easy access and my phone in my front right jeans pocket.
I left my house at two thirty four p.m. and locked the door with the spare key placing under a nearby flower pot and I started walking toward the street where Shadow wanted to meet me.
It didn't take long to reach the place where Shadow had said he would meet me, the weather was cold but still sunny almost a perfect unsteady harmony!
I waited ten minutes until the same van Shadow drove before pulled up along the street and the door opened to reveal Shadow in the drivers seat and Michael in the back.
I got in and we drove off toward the warehouse that was Shadows base of operations. The drive was long and tedious as no one was speaking but before long we arrived at Shadow's base and we all walked down to what I referred to as 'The bunker.'
Shadow beckoned Michael to sit down on one of the medical tables, Michael did and Shadow began to speak "did you inform your friends and family that you would be 'away' for a while?" Shadow questioned.
"Yes I have" he replied in a nervous tone.
"You don't have to go through with this if you don't want to!" I interjected which caused Shadow and Michael to look at me.
"No I need to do this it's the only way I'd survive this 'game'!" Michael responded confidently.
"Alright then let's get this started!" Shadow proclaimed as he walked to a cupboard and retrieved a bottle and a needle. Shadow motioned for Michael to lie down on the medical bed as Shadow attached an IV drip into Michael's wrist.
I held Michael's hand trying to comfort him as Shadow injected the needle with a liquid inside into the IV drip and within less than a minute Michael fell unconscious...
