Chapter 40 | The end of an ordeal

I charged into the fray, my hair trailing behind me as if each strand was being blown away by a storm, billowing with ferocious winds. With a loud crash I struck at John with my baton, he stepped back the katana he had stolen from Patricia almost falling from his grasp, but his grip remained tight.

He regained his footing quickly before the katana swooped down in a deadly arc, I pushed off with my foot and dodged to the side while the katana struck the floor.

Crouching on the ground to the side, John whipped his head to the side and looked to me, his eyes wild as he used the katana to strike toward me. Quickly, I ducked and pressed my body to the ground to avoid the blade.

As the blade flew over my body I jumped back to my feet ready to strike again at John. He stood readying another attack with his katana while I leaped forward, sailing past John and striking his head with my baton on the way past.

The baton landed with a crack against his skull as he audibly moaned in response to the sharp pain.

John pivoted on his heel and snapped his attention toward me, he readied his weapon as I did the same with my baton, ready for his inevitable attack that would surely come.

He jabbed forward and I easily dodge by moving back, then he jabbed at me again as I backed up avoiding each jab with ease. As his jabs slowed I heaved desperately for air. Drawing in breath as fast as I tried to regain my composure.

"WHY ARE YOU FIGHTING ME, MY DEAR FOX?" He commanded his tone clearly infuriated and angered by me, it gave me a twisted satisfaction.

"That is not my name, no wonder your mother and father hated you!" I taunted back.

John gritted his teeth in anger and brandished the katana ready for an attack, "we don't have to fight my dear Fox I promise I would take you back! All you would have to do is swear your undying allegiance to me and never! I repeat NEVER! Betray me or go against anything I say, can I get an answer?" He questioned a wide smile stretching across his deranged face.

Anger pulsed through my veins like a newfound energy and with it my hands moved almost instinctually, the baton I swiftly returned to my belt whilst my other hand retrieved my combat knife and with a firm grip. I swiped at John's chest, "I will never obey you!" I screamed as I grazed his clothing leaving him in complete and utter silence.

"You little bitc--" I cut him off by twirling from my strike and swiping at him once again this time slicing his left cheek.

As he moved away from me to avoid my blade but as he did a red line slowly formed where I had slashed him, beads of red dripped from the cut as they dribbled down his face and onto his clothes.

"How could you?" John questioned his tone soft. "But you love me!" He continued desperately.

"No" I started. "I really have never liked you, let alone loved you!" I snapped.

John's eyes brimmed with tears, "No no no no no no no no no no shut up shut up shut up! You! You are lying! I'll make you love me!" He screamed like a child who had been denied whatever thing he'd asked for, in this case it was my 'love' for him.

As he spoke I consciously felt my body trying to obey his every word, but I resisted, was I somehow obeying whatever he said?

I had no time to ask why, especially as John charged forward and sliced at me cutting my clothes as I barely dodged a fatal blow, but as I dodged he shot forward and with a clenched fist he connected hard with my chest. The hit sent pain throughout my chest causing me to lose my breath but I quickly recovered.

While I recovered John released his grip on the katana and proceeded to pummel me with his fists, each hit landed some on my head and most on my chest, some on my wrists and legs. The sheer force of the hits forced me to drop my combat knife and as I tried to continue the fight I dropped due to exhaustion.

John loomed over me, his shadow casting over me. "I'll give you one last chance, love me!" He commanded his voice echoing in my ears.

"No" I replied sharply.

"Too bad" he responded as he raised the katana high into the air above his head ready to strike at my head.

I closed my eyes ready for my death.

Suddenly, a loud bang shook the room and as my eyes opened. I saw John his arms limp and the katana falling from his hand and in the upper right area of his chest a deep red hole slowly oozing  blood from a gunshot wound.

I looked over to the other side of the room and saw Patricia on the floor still stunned. Meanwhile Lizzie was stood up on her feet, her body trembling with the gun that John had lost earlier, shaking in her hands.

Lizzie had shot John.

John stumbled back and mumbled "sis?" His words were distant as he fell backwards over the railing of the walkway. His body fell into the water below with a mighty crash.

Patricia and I raced over to the edge and saw nothing except the raging torrents of water washing John away in a mixture of pale red liquid swilling down the large funnel below.

"Do you think he's alive?" Patricia questioned.

"I don't think so" I replied as I looked for any trace of John but couldn't see any.

"Good riddance!" Patricia replied moving away from the edge and with a heartless tone.

We moved away from the edge of the platform and the three of us left the dam and rejoined the others. While everyone recuperated Shadow pulled me aside, "we should go deactivate that thing in your neck!" He suggested as he began to hobble back into the dam.

We entered the computer room and Shadow pointed out a button on the console, "it's this one!" Shadow stated.

I hovered my hand over the button and said "are you ready?" I asked Shadow, to which he nodded in response. "One, two, three!" I said as my hand landed on the button. Instantly I felt a small tingle in the back of my neck then, no more discomfort.

"Is it over?" I asked Shadow, trying to fill an awkward silence that loomed over us.

He replied with "I think it is!"

**One Day Later**

After the ordeal at the dam and the deactivation of the implants, Shadow had removed the implants from: mine, Patricia's, Sean's and Elliot's necks. Unfortunately, after the confrontation with John Kincaid, Shadow discovered that John had overdosed Elliot on the coma medicine and placed him into a coma that couldn't be reversed by Shadow, leaving Sean to tend to his coma ridden brother at home.

Whereas Shadow searches for a way to reverse Elliot's condition, and obsessively searches for who created The end of days killing game in his own personal mission.

Furthermore Lizzie grew distant at the realisation of fatally shooting her brother, and sending him to a watery grave. Meanwhile Patricia grew ever more anxious at the prospect of visiting her estranged father, and living with him for a month.

Meanwhile I slowly returned to my life, or tried to even after The end of days killing game, and after the death of John Kincaid my tormentor.

In the end, my torment was finally over and I could live my life free of The end of days, and free of the man in the skull mask.

I am free, finally...
