Chapter 22 | The scars

Drowsily, I awoke on the sofa located in the living room of my house.

Specks of dust danced in the air clearly visible due to the rays of yellow and orange light pushing through the gaps in the curtains pulled across the windows of the room. Even though I was still tired and a little disoriented but I assume from light pouring into the room that it was the next morning.

My father was nowhere to be seen. On the floor lay nothing, the mess from the night before had clearly been cleaned up by my father, thankfully. I would've hated to clean after such a peaceful sleep.

My body was unresponsive or my body just wanted to procrastinate.

I thought about the events of the previous day: a woman died in my arms yesterday and the thing that worried me most was if I had clean up the mess I had made last night!

What was wrong with me?

Had I gotten over the woman's death in a matter of hours?

Was I that heartless!

Eventually, I dragged myself up off the sofa and decided to go upstairs to do anything to distract myself.

I lurched around my house and wobbled my way upstairs into my bedroom. Finally I collapsed onto my bed, exhaling deeply as I did so.

Involuntarily, I sat up on the bed and grabbed my phone and proceeded to flick through the home screen looking through each page aimlessly. While flicking through the phone I noticed that I had a series of messages from Patricia.

The first message said 'Hi Lexi how are you doing? I heard what happened at Flowers and flora do you need to talk?'

The message showed Patricia caring about how I felt and my response was non-existent, I completely ignored her message that was sent the previous night!

The next message read 'Lexi why aren't you responding? Are you okay?'

Yet again she showed clear concern and was rewarded with being ignored. The next message read 'I won't be able to speak my PTD is beeping, goodbye'

This text showed that Patricia was in some sort of trouble or at least she had found another participant. The nest message from Patricia read 'I have him, I have him tied up under the broken bridge in Harrow woods'

This message confirmed that Patricia had found a participant and had him tied up under the bridge in Harrow woods I needed to get there quickly.

Quickly, I rushed to my cupboard and slipped into a pair of jeans, a white short sleeved shirt, a navy blue waterproof coat and a pair of black flat heeled shoes. I grabbed: my phone, my pocket knife, my stun gun and the PTD plus the PTD that I had collected from the woman who died yesterday. Then I walked out the house after locking the door behind me.

I walked at a fast pace hurriedly trying to get to my destination: the bridge in Harrow woods also known as the area of woodland behind Lizzie's house.

I reached the edge of Harrow woods still making good time and I pushed through the woods dodging and weaving between the dense trees, jumping and stepping over branches and small pieces of foliage.

The woods echoed with the sound of wind rushing past the leaves and small animals making a mess of miscellaneous noises that drowned out the sounds of twigs snapping beneath my feet.

Eventually, I reached the bridge with a fast flowing river beneath it, I ventured further until I could see what else was under the bridge. Under the bridge was Patricia, her facial expression unmoving and in her hand she had a long blade looking weapon that glinted in the light. I assume it was the katana she had fought Shadow with the other day.

Below her lay a man on the floor with tape over his mouth and a blindfold over his eyes along with tape around his legs and hands! From what I could tell the man had blonde hair that was long hanging over his head almost down to his shoulders, the man wore a pair of ripped jeans with nothing on his feet he also wore a ripped short sleeved shirt.

The man shivered due to the cold embracing his barely covered body.

"Patricia what are you doing!" I snapped.

"I am doing what needs to be done" She retorted.

"Why who is he?" I asked taking a step closer.

"He's the brother of the man who attacked you!" Patricia replied in a monotone voice. I was stunned, I had never told Patricia who had attacked me and the report never mentioned my name.

"H-how did you--" I stuttered confused.

"His name is Elliot Anderson younger brother of Tom Anderson" Patricia replied in the same monotone voice.

"How do you know that?" I asked in a more calming voice.

"I asked your Dad about you getting attacked and me and Elliot we had a little chat, plus I found his wallet" Patricia replied sternly.

"Oh why did you attack him?" I asked.

"He attacked me! I was walking down the street when he came up behind me and tried to choke me he was ranting about some 'bloodlust' so I fought him off. He was weak in a fight so I quickly dealt with him and tied him up then I dragged him out here!" Patricia replied calmly.

"That doesn't mean he deserves to die!" I snapped back.

"Yes it does" She employed calmly, as Patricia raised the katana looking blade into the air and ready to strike down and kill Elliot.

As the blade came rushing down my body moved instinctually, I gabbed my knife and launched it at the katana! The pocket knife clashed with the katana creating a loud clang as the metal collided making Patricia miss her target but only by a few inches.

Patricia looked at me her state completely emotionless and unmoving until she darted toward me. The katana pointed directly forward, moving based of instinct yet again I moved slightly to the right and used my right forearm to direct the sword away from me.

The sword cut straight through my clothing cause blood to poor from my arm I winced from the pain, then I searched through my pocket and retrieved the taser and jabbed directly at Patricia. The taser connected with her side making her drop the katana but I also lost grip on the taser.

I dropped to the ground in pain and Patricia quickly recovered as she grabbed a thick piece if wood and stood to swing the wood. She aimed directly at my head aiming for a kill shot!

Immediately, I grabbed the fallen katana and sliced cutting the wood in half. Then I dropped the blade and retrieved my stun gun and jabbed it at Patricia hard sending a shock through her and she passed out.

Patricia lay on the floor unconscious as I grabbed my phone and called Shadow.

Shadow arrived to see me next to an unconscious Patricia and a panicking Elliot still blindfolded and bound with tape.

Shadow walked over and grabbed me by the hands helping me up, next he spoke in his usual deep tone "you grab Patricia and I will grab this guy!" I nodded in agreement.

I grabbed Patricia and tried to lift her but I couldn't and winced in pain due to the cut on my fore arm, sensing my weakness Shadow grabbed Patricia and slung both her and Elliot over his shoulders as I grabbed all the miscellaneous weapons from the fight: my taser, my pocket knife and Patricia's katana.

We walked and eventually arrived at Shadow's black van placing both Patricia and Elliot in the back of the van. Both me and Shadow climbed in the front of the van and we drove to the Bunker in complete silence.

The silence was deafening as though I could feel Shadow's disappointment emanating directly from his unmoving facial expression.

Finally, we reached the Bunker entering the warehouse and parking the van as Shadow carried both Patricia and Elliot. Without any complaints he carried them both down the stairway and through the metal door. I followed suit grabbing all the weapons from my fight with Patricia.

Shadow laid Patricia on a medical table and removed the blindfold from Elliot's eyes.

Shadow began to talk to Eliot explaining the situation but I could not meet Elliot's gaze out of embarrassment...or shame.

"Alexis wake up Patricia and Elliot you need to go home and find your brother" Shadow commanded in his usual stern tone as he removed the tape from his hands and legs.

"Umm okay" I replied as I shuffled along to the table where Patricia led, still unconscious.

Gently, I rocked her shoulder in an attempt to wake he up, but to no avail. Patricia moved in the handcuffs she had been placed into by Shadow and to my surprise Patricia eyes slowly opened!

After her eyes adjusted to being awake they widened in shock as she recognised me. "I am sorry" Patricia muttered quietly.

"Same" I replied.

"You didn't end up unconscious" Patricia retorted as she giggled slightly and I accompanied her.

The next ten minutes were filled with giggles and general chatter from both me and Patricia, the fight from before but a distant memory faded from my head. But the scars would probably last and not just the physical scars but the emotional ones.
