Chapter 19 | The purple tulips

When I awoke the next morning I was dreary from my heavy slumber, the time was seven forty a.m. and almost immediately in my head I remembered that I had to work experience from nine a.m. until four thirty p.m. at the local garden centre.

Rubbing my eyes I opened up my cupboard and retrieved a pair of light brown pants and the garden centre's uniform. The uniform was a dark green t-shirt with the name of the garden centre 'Flowers and Flora' along with my own name below that 'Alexis Monroe' both stitched with a fine golden thread in a fancy writing style. Along with my uniform and pants I grabbed my brown boots and laced them up.

After the encounter with Piggy Piggy last night I had not eaten anything but luckily I had the left over lasagne from my visit to Lizzie's house.

I walked downstairs and searched through the fridge to find the box of three pieces of cold lasagne, so I removed the plastic lid and grabbed a small plate. Using a fork I scooped one piece I the lasagne from the box to the plate, not wanting to eat cold lasagne for breakfast I heated the food up in the microwave.

After the food had been heated up I used a fork to wolf down the meal having plentiful bites of the food, until eventually my plate was completely empty. The meal itself was awful tasting but food was food and I knew that my Dad hated it when I didn't eat.

After that I walked to the bathroom and proceeded to brush my teeth to avoid any bad smelling breath later in the day, replacing any foul odour with the refreshing smell of a minty toothpaste.

When I finished brushing my teeth I checked the time and saw it was eight twenty three a.m. meaning I had around forty minutes until I had to be at Flowers and Flora garden centre for my work experience.

Not wanting to be late for my shift I grabbed: my mobile phone, the PTD, my pocket knife and taser. Then I walked downstairs opened the door and walked out locking the door behind me.

The walk to Flowers and Flora was consumed with the ever present sense that Piggy Piggy could attack at any moment, and he had proved that!

After last night I knew I had to be more vigilant of my surrounding since I hadn't even noticed Piggy Piggy following me and Patricia, if it weren't for Patricia warning me the situation could of been completely different.

Every corner I turned slowed my heart beat in anticipation for a worse case scenario of walking into Piggy Piggy. Instead of letting fear control me I tried to walk with courage pushing away all my paranoid thoughts until eventually, I reached Flowers and Flora.

My body relaxed from its tensed state when I was greeted by the familiar glass walled building of Flowers and Flora. The entrance was a green arch covered in climbing ivy and decorated with pink, red and white flowers. Above the arch was the green sign with 'Flowers and Flora' written and illuminated in a golden lights.

Inside the garden centre there was a huge room with three of the walls made of glass and the last one left open to an outside area, inside the massive room was a counter where the customers could pay for the flowers and ornaments they would buy. While the rest of the room was filled with rows and rows of flowers on shelves and incorporated into colourful displays.

Sat at the counter was a woman she looked to be in her late sixties, early seventies with long grey hair tied in a ponytail on her head accompanying her brown eyes and slightly wrinkled skin. The woman wore the Flowers and Flora uniform with her name stitched on, it read 'Dorris Morse.'

Dorris had worked at the garden centre for well over thirty years but she didn't just work here she owned the store. She had accepted my application about two months ago and since then I had worked on every fortnight on Saturday and Sunday. Part of the job at Flowers and Flora was selling flowers and ornaments for the people of Pine Wood Valley.

"Alexis! Hello dear how have you been?" Dorris asked in her usually motherly and caring tone.

"Yeah I'm fine Dorris how about you?" I responded returning the caring sentiment.

"Well I've been fine how's your dad since-" Dorris tried to say but I cut her off.

"Yeah yeah he's doing well, so what am I doing today?" I questioned changing the subject.

"Oh yes deary today I'll be working on the register so you will be tending to the plants and advising the customers, is that okay?" Dorris explained rubbing her obviously aching knuckles.

"Yes" I replied simply before turning and walking to the watering can, and filling it up with water. Then I proceeded to wander through the flowers and watering the particularly dry or parched plants.

My day was pretty uneventful even though the garden centre had quite a lot of shoppers and visitors, except from the singular customer who approached me and asked for advice.

The man started by saying "umm excuse me miss."

I turned on my heels to see an elderly man who wore a black suit and pants with a black tie and black fedora and smart shiny black dress shoes. The mans face was drawn and tired his hair was white under his hat along with dark black eyes.

"Yeah hello what's do you need sir?" I questioned the man.

"Well umm I just wanted to know what are the best flowers to put on a grave?" The man stuttered in a quiet and nervous tone.

"I'm assuming it's for remembrance. Am I right?" I asked the man as I looked down to meet the eyes of.

"Uhh yes for my wife!" The man replied a little saddened by that statement.

"Was she pretty?" I asked trying to lighten the mood.

"She was a stunner" the man joked a slight smile starting to appear on his aged and wrinkled face.

"Well then if that's the case there is no specific flower for remembering a loved one but you need something pretty and yet simplistic so maybe..." I replied before motioning for the man to follow me.

The man followed me as I looked around the shelves until I stopped and pointed out a selection of purple tulips.

"Here is what I would place on the grave" I replied holding up the purple tulips.

"Umm their quite-" the man tried to say but I cut him off.

"The purple colour used to mean regality and royalty while the tulip would represent purity, but most of all they are beautiful" the man nodded as a tear welled up in his eye.

"Yes I'll take these then miss Monroe can I have six please!" The man replied in a raspy tone as I gathered up six singular purple tulips and handed them to the man.

"Okay you can go pay for them at the counter and tell Dorris sent you she'll give you a discount!" I replied to the man as he walked to the counter a smile worn on his face, when he got to the counter his smile was infectious as it made Dorris smile widely as well.

Serving the old man made me happy on the inside even though I didn't know the man's name I had still managed to help a complete stranger.

The rest of my day was happy, completely happy. No worries entered my mind at all! Until I started to think...

I needed my life back!
I needed my normal life back!
I wanted my life back!

And it was then I realised that if I wanted my normal life back I needed to decipher the clues to find the shutdown button.

It was then I had a massive and critical thought I had friends!
I wasn't alone.
I had Shadow.
Shadow the masked vigilante who from what I had seen was insanely smart. And he had many resources at his disposal.

I decided to take a break from my working shift and got out my phone and sent a message to Shadow, the message said 'This is Alexis we need to talk about the clues that participants get when one is disposed of, I'm having trouble figuring out what they mean and how they fit together.'

Then I pressed send on the message and placed my phone back into my pocket and thought about the message and I hoped that Shadow would be able to help me with the clues that I currently had about the shutdown button.

"Alexis dear you know your shift was over thirty minutes ago" Dorris shouted toward me attracting my attention.

"Oh sorry Dorris I'll go home then" I replied before putting the equipment I had used back where I had previously found it.

"See you tomorrow Dorris!" I shouted toward Dorris as I walked out the garden centre.

The walk home was quiet and uneventful and I was glad of it.

I walked at a brisk pace and when I got home I realised it was now five thirty four p.m. so I went to my room and instinctually checked my phone.

On my phone it read that I had one new message form unknown.
