Chapter 17 | The river
Patricia and Lizzie wolfed down the lasagne while I barely touched my piece. It was ironic I was the one who complained about being hungry but I had barely even touched the food that was provided.
The reason I didn't eat was I felt sick to my stomach the mother of my best friend could be conspiring to kill me, and I would never know.
Kara Kincaid wore a perfectly constructed mask, on the outside she was the mayor of Pine Wood Valley and the mother of two well behaved children and she was the wife to a respected business man.
It was a perfect lie.
In reality she could be an unwilling participant in a mutual killing game just like me or...him...Piggy Piggy.
But he was a monster, he didn't care he was in a killing game for him that was merely and excuse to kill. It sickened me.
"Lexi you're spacing out again!" Patricia shouted snapping me back to reality as she waved a hand in front of my face.
"Oh, sorry just- oww" I let out a yelp. "I burnt my tongue!" I exclaimed as Lizzie and Patricia laughed in amusement.
"That's karma for ignoring us," Lizzie laughed to herself.
"That is not fair where is Patricia's karma for calling me Lexi" I joked back.
"I'm a saint! Saints don't get karma" Patricia replied, Lizzie giggled at her joke while I just frowned in annoyance.
We continued to eat our lasagne I tried to eat as much as I could but I only managed to eat one piece while Lizzie ate two pieces and Patricia ate three whole pieces!
"So what should we do now?" Lizzie questioned.
"Umm any ideas Patsy!" I said before Patricia could call me Lexi.
"Ohh so Lexi is fighting back now eh?" Patricia retorted.
"Patsy versus Lexi fight of the ages!" Lizzie interrupted.
Me and Patricia then glared at each other, Lizzie caught between each of our glares she looked unsure of what to say.
As Patricia stared at me I noticed she didn't blink her body was motionless, I had only seen this look on Patricia once before after the shooting at Cafe Du Pierre she followed Michael into the alley and they faced each other.
Patricia had become emotionless like nothing could faze her. It was scary she now was the most feared thing in the room
Reluctantly, I blinked and Patricia returned back to 'normal' as if in a flood her emotions returned.
"SO WE HAVE A WINNER AND IT'S PATSY!" Lizzie exclaimed as she held Patricia's hand into the air while I wiped my eyes to stop them from watering.
"Go on then Patsy, give us some words of umm winning" I interjected.
"Yeah Patsy who do you want to thank for this victory?" Lizzie added.
"Well i'd like to thank um my mom for not being here to distract me, my dad for doing nothing I guess and finally i'd like to thank the academy!" Patricia replied sounding proud.
"Why thank the academy?" I questioned curiously.
"Um I don't know it's what people normally say right heck I don't even go to an academy," Patricia joked back causing Lizzie to giggle in response.
Then a thought came into my head 'Why were Patricia's emotions so come and go like at times her feelings would just disappear from time to time.'
Why had I never noticed this bipolar nature of Patricia's emotions?
Why hadn't anyone ever noticed or ever commented on the bipolar nature of Patricia's emotions?
Was it a recent development?
Since the beginning of the end of days killing game?
What causes this lack of emotions in Patricia?
I had no answers to any of these questions so I had to live in the present and the present was me deciding what to do with my two best friends.
"Seriously does anyone have any ideas of what we can do?" Lizzie spoke up.
"Your garden!" I exclaimed suddenly.
"What?" Patricia responded her voice a little confused.
"Lizzie's garden connects to the woods right?" I responded.
"Yeah why?" Lizzie replied confused, yet curious.
"Well near the edge of the woods there's a stream river thing right?" I said stated hoping my long term memory was still how it used to be.
"Yeah, I think there is" Patricia responded seeming more sure of herself than I was.
"Well let's go there then!" Lizzie replied excitedly.
"Yeah it could be fun," Patricia added.
So we all nodded in agreement and Lizzie led me and Patricia downstairs, then through the back door into the garden.
Lizzie's back garden was huge and filled with green grass and along the edges was rows of flowers: roses, tulips and many more that I could not recognise or name! In the centre of the garden was a marble water fountain in the shape three plates stacked on top of each other largest at the bottom to the smallest at the top.
We passed the flowers and the fountain and continued onto the back end of the garden where a large tree stood with full blossoming green leaves showing off its impressive features.
Behind the impressive tree was the brick wall that surrounded Lizzie's garden. This area of the wall at the end of the garden had a metal gate that was currently closed. Lizzie unlatched the gate and swung it open motioning for me and Patricia to walk through.
The three of us were seemingly transported to a different place entirely! Trees littered the area around us as their roots entwined with the ground to create an uneven mess of natural mass below our feet.
It didn't take us long to reach the river, the river was about six meters wide and the water rushed past at an alarming rate.
We all stood at the side of the river and we just talked.
It was then that we noticed the flow of the river...the water flowing in the river the speed decreased dramatically.
"Am I the only one seeing this?" I questioned my friends as I pointed toward the river.
"No we see this too" Patricia replied confirming that it wasn't just a figment of my imagination.
"Holy cra--" Lizzie exclaimed being cut off.
"Guys look!" Patricia shouted pointing back to the river.
The river's flow had now completely stopped! Lizzie confidently then walked onto the now dry river bed and she started to tap her feet on the wet stones of the river.
"Well it turns out I can tap dance!" Lizzie said breaking the silence.
"Come on let me have a go!" Patricia exclaimed as she began to also tap the wet stones of the river bed using her feet. Both of them continued to tap the damp rocks using their feet.
Eventually, I mustered up the courage to hop onto the stones and start tapping, needless to say we were not very good at tap dancing! But the three of us still tried to dance but we only created a loud obnoxious mess of tapping.
Suddenly, my blood grew cold and my heartbeat became more prominent, my body moved almost instinctually and I sprinted back onto the riverside off of the river bed.
"Lexi what's wrong?" Patricia asked in response to my sudden outburst.
"Are you alright?" Lizzie added looking concerned for my well being.
"Guys get off the river!" I said keeping my composure but with a sense of urgency.
"Why?" Patricia asked defiance clear in her voice.
"Just come out of the river bed! NOW!" I shouted as Lizzie quickly moved out of the river bed a fearful look in her eyes.
Meanwhile Patricia stood defiantly on the damp rocks of the river bed.
"Patricia if ever I needed you to trust me it's NOW!" I commanded, I could swear I saw Patricia flicker with fear before returning to her emotionless state.
The world slowed or my mind sped up to process what was happening: the animals in the woods became silent, the wind was practically non-existent, my friends words became quiet and the world seemed calm.
The calm before the storm.
My muscles tensed and my heartbeat increased, slight vibrations shook the ground beneath my feet as I leaped...
My feet connected with the damp stones as I darted straight at Patricia!
I tackled her and she did not even react she and I just fell to the other side of the river as a torrent of water rushed down the river creating a divide. On one side was Lizzie and on the other was me and Patricia lying on the ground. I had barely saved Patricia from the violent barrage of deadly water.
"Holy shi-- Lexi you j-just s- aved my life" Patricia stuttered thankfully.
"Well next time I say get out of a river be what will you do?" I replied sarcastically.
"I will get out of the river bed," Patricia replied sheepishly.
"Good" I replied as we both just laughed unsure of what we should say.
"Hey, hey guys are you okay!" Lizzie shouted from across the other side of the river.
"Yeah. Yeah we are!" I shouted back.
"Just a bit shaken up" Patricia replied.
"Walk against the flow of the river I think there's a bridge you two can cross over" Lizzie shouted.
"Okay we'll start walking" I shouted back.
"Right I'll meet you up there" Lizzie responded.
"See you there then!" I replied, and with that me and Patricia's walked for about five minutes before finding a rickety wooden bridge that led me and Patricia to Lizzie's side of the river.
I had saved Patricia and we said nothing more about it we just walked back to Lizzie's house.
