The Pony Bar
I tune my guitar as I stand on the make shift stage the owner of The Pony Bar (referred to in previous chapters) just finish making 3 hours ago. Given the circumstances, he was practically able to accomplish a miracle. Seriously, the Bartender/Owner was lucky enough to recognize me when I was jogging down the sidewalk attached to his bar that he nearly foamed at the mouth. I had generally average features, so unless you've meet me personally, I can blend with the crowd. That's why a good chunk of society goes by with me being unnoticed.
I tried to bluff the Bartender but the Bouncer made things worse by confirming my identity due to the fact that Logan threatening him with his claws was quote "the scariest day of my m*therf*cking existence."
I had no other option but to concede, which was a golden opportunity to them cause then they were able to book my band which had become the most exclusive thing in New York. The Bouncer and the Bartender turned out to be brothers, they were barely making ends meet as it was and the whole bar was on the verge of closing down/bankruptcy. David and Sara were more than ecstatic to play another gig and Kevin being new was more the eager to step up.
The bar was spacious enough for afew extra table that the Bouncer Brother was setting up. But due to outrageous popular demands the Bar Brothers had to sell tickets just to regulate the number of people who wanted to pour in. I made it clear that I didn't want another incident my band had with a previous client whom ended up selling tickets to see us at $10,000 each. It was so outrageous I became furious and left the venue mid performance.
So the Bar Brothers agreed to bring down the price of tickets to a reasonable $1,000. And with over 250 max tickets sold, the Bartender Brother wants to kiss me for saving their butts. I look up from tuning my guitar with David to look at him clean glass cups, he looks both overjoyed, delighted, and blissful.
He also looks kinda hot....
"Urgh" I groan to myself.
"What's up?" David asked curiously.
"I'm admiring the Bartender," I say nonchalantly.
David glances in his direction and does a one over on him. "You can do better,"
"He's really cute though," I add.
"Still...he's a bartender" he finishes tuning his guitar and straps it over his shoulder. "At least go for the Bouncer, he's at least a little bit taller."
"True," I tune the last string, "But he's just too burly."
"Just stay away from both of them" David says darkly. "We don't want another cheating incident."
"It's not cheating!" I whisper growl.
"Oh yeah, locking lips with someone other than your boyfriend isn't cheating at all." He says with sarcasm dripping from his voice as he walks off the stage.
He doesn't get it...nobody will get it but-
"Hey babe" Kevin comes up from behind me and kisses my cheek. "Why does David look pissed?"
"It's nothing..." I say.
Kevin looks at me cautiously with one eye, then shrugs the whole thing off. "Anyway, you ready to rock this joint!?"
"Hell ya!" I say excitedly.
We finish putting everything in order right as the Bartender Brother opens the doors and hundreds of people crowd into the relatively small bar. I guess it was a pretty smart idea putting the Bouncer Brother as security control in front of the band cause some people would have tried to rip the clothes right off our body. They ran towards us but stop dead in their tracks at the look on his face.
Hard to image a guy like that could be terrified by anyone, although, even someone with a heart of iron would have a hard time not letting it turn to rust in the sight of Logan's claws.
Kevin and David take the front of the stage while Sara sits behind the drums and I wedge myself into the back shadows.
Too many people here, too many that will recognize me later...that'll know who I am!
I take a deep steadying breathe to stop myself from flipping out, and for the rest of the night resolve to look down and keep my eyes on nothing but my guitar. I ruffle my hair at the front abit and I angle it to cover most of my face.
"Woooooooooooooo!! IT'S FREEEEEZE" I fat guy yells.
Clam down, calm down, clam down!
I grip the handle of my guitar with considerable more strength then I thought I possessed.
"Calm down babe, it'll all be over soon" Kevin leans back and whispers in my ear.
I nod meekly.
"What is UP, customers of the Pony Bar!!!" David screams into the mic.
The crowd roars and screams, turning everything into a tizzy.
"Let's turn this place inside oooouuuttt!" David raves.
David slams the mic down on the stand and rages into the powerful song we practiced only once before early that day.
The music comes in low with the beats pulsing at rhythmatic intervals. Kevin slides his fingers over the keyboards, playing out the electronic beats and futuristic sounds.
"Levels, levels, levels, levels"
The crowd instantly begins stomping their feet and bobbing their head, then David swings around with his guitar and proceeds to yelling into the microphone.
"Get Get on my elevator, baby we're going up
Give me that now and later, I can't get enough
So much to discover, please don't stop me now (don't stop me)
Every time I touch you, you lift right off the ground"
David turns around and Kevin steps in in his place,
"Let them go, all the one's tryna get in the door
I'm a go where they all couldn't go
Up a floor, up a floor, up a floor, oh"
The crowd jumps and screams and dances their butts off. I couldn't help but smile in the background as I look onto the crowd, they were all happy and having a good time, and at the end of the day that's all a performer wants to see.
"I know, we can get higher
There's levels to your love
Yeah, there's levels to your love
And I know, we can get higher
There's levels to your love
And I keep on climbing up"
Kevin grabs the mic and says in his deepest voice,
"Rooftop!"
He then hits a button on the key boards that made a deep sound beat that Sara pounded too and sounded eerily like,
"Up-up-up, up-up-up, up-up-up"
I can't help but swing my head to the beat, everyone's enthusiasm was just too infectious. I dance around the back of the stage next to Sara, we look at each other and both giggle mischievously. As I hold the neck of my guitar and swing it around I spot something gold in the left hand corner of the bar. My heart instantly stops beating.
"Aw yeah, just walking up on the ceiling, dancing up on the wall
You and that drug you're dealing, should be against the law
All this heat keep rising, make you stop, drop, and roll
I'm bottling up the lightning, supernatural"
David switches again and swings around to reveal Kevin standing back-to-back behind him who continues singing.
"Let them go, all the one's tryna get in the door
I'm a go where they all couldn't go
Up a floor, up a floor, up a floor, yeah"
But instead of stopping and switching back to David, Kevin continues,
"I know, we can get higher
There's levels to your love
Yeah, there's levels to your love
And I know, we can get higher
There's levels to your love
And I keep on climbing up"
I was still fixated on the golden object in the back corner of the bar, I feel my palms start to get sweaty but I fight through it and hit my cords perfectly. I tried by best to continue breathing like a normal human being, but I couldn't keep my eyes off the thing that shined brightly in the back, sitting at the table with a glass and bottle of beer on the table.
I get distracted by Kevin and David both singing,
"Levels, levels, levels, levels
Levels to your love
Yeah, heaven can't reach us
Yeah, we're high-fiving Jesus
Yeah, yeah"
The lights dim and our little stage is bathed in light, so I couldn't see the crowd anymore, but believe me I could definitely hear them. I gently feel Sara nudge my elbow, and I instantly realized that it's me and Sara's cue to take the last verse of the song. The lights hit the both of us softly and the crowd's volume reduces abit.
"And I know, we can get higher
There's levels to your love
Yeah, there's levels to your love
And I know, we can get higher
There's levels to your love
And I keep on climbing up"
A lot of whistles and cat calls ensued, but who can blame them? When me and Sara harmonies we can turn cheese to butter. My heart continues to beat so forcefully I'm afraid that the mic might pick it up and relay it over the speakers.
The Kevin yells again,
"Take them to the rooftop!"
And the guys take over again with the last of the lyrics, with the lights blaring and bathing everyone on colorized lights.
"Oh, levels
There's levels to your love, yeah, yeah
Levels, levels, levels, levels
Oh, oh, yeah, get on my level
There's levels to your love and I keep on climbing up
Levels"
And on that last word I see with utmost clarity the person sitting in the back left of the bar.
Well you can obviously guess who it was, and I'm torn between running off the stage in a blind panic, or pretending I never saw him, even though we're both staring dead straight at each other.
I may have lost my powers and my family, twice. But I can say with utmost confidence that my heart is completely frozen and is filled with nothing but hatred towards Jonathan Spencer Storm.
