Seventeen - Not my blood
There was a knock at the door at an unreasonable hour; Kate got up assuming it was Haley or Star, whoever she was tonight. She had gotten so used to rolling out of bed at an unreasonable hour to answer the door that it became second nature. She had even started sleeping with her slippers on Thursdays.
However, it has been a while since it had happened. She was starting to believe/hoped Haley had turned over a new leaf and retired Star for the moment being.
Kate opened the door still rubbing the sleep from her eyes, not bothering to check the peep-hole. She thought nothing could scare her as much as the first time Star turned up on her doorstep covered in bloody scratches. Nothing could shock her because she had seen it all. She was wrong.
Kate gasped.
"Sta- ...Haley?" Her hands clapped over her mouth in shock. Haley stood in the doorway her clothes torn and dishevelled; splattered in blood, bruises littering her body. Her eye... Her right eye swollen shut, a bloody cut over her throat like a blade had...
Her heart clenched as Haley stood limply in the doorway.
"What happened?" Kate asked frantically, swarming her friend assessing the damage. "Haley?"
Her friend slumped onto her with one hand balancing on the door frame leaving a bloody mark as she limped feebly into the house. Kate rushed to help her onto the couch.
"Do you need to go to the hospital? Should we call the police?! What about your parents?!" Kate was beside herself. She wasn't sure what to do. She took a steadying breath, trying to calm her already fraying nerves.
"Haley, say something," she said looking into her friend's battered face and blood that puddled her clothes. "What do I do?"
Haley shook her head once. "It's not my blood."
"Haley-"
"Just let me stay here for the night."
She shot a stern look at Kate, glaring at with her good eye.
"I can't talk about it."
Kate groaned defeated, "you can never talk about it."
It wasn't like she could kick Haley out even if she wanted to. She was always going to let her stay but she needed help, more than Kate could give her.
"You don't have to tell me what happened, but I think you should go to the-"
"No," Haley snapped, looking directly at Kate but not really seeing her at all. Kate searched her for clues, but her face was blank. Unreadable.
Kate sighed racking her head. "Fine... at least let me fix you up a bit." She replied reluctantly, giving in like she always did. She had seen her mother treat wounds before. They had a medical kit at home filled with more than just band-aids in case of emergencies.
