One - Introducing Haley
"Hey, do you want to go to a poetry slam Thursday night?" Haley asked her best and only friend Kate, who gave her a strange look in return.
"Are you asking, or one of them?" Haley snorted and Kate shook her head. They were both lying under the shade of an old oak tree. It was lunchbreak and neither of them felt like doing anything, but laze around and be boring.
"Last time I checked you don't do poetry slams," Kate said.
Haley smirked up at the sky. "I don't do poetry slams, but Vivienne does," she flirts, flicking her eyes to Kate, who rolled hers in response, taking her eyes off the fluffy white clouds to focus on her best friend. She groaned.
"Again? You know I love you, but not your crazy alter egos." Vivienne was an artsy, pretentious, stuck-up snob that read Hemmingway and made Kate feel small for not caring about the continuing decline of every little facet of society.
Kate despised the girl. She couldn't stand being in the same room as her. She couldn't take a second of her company even though, technically, Vivienne and Haley were one of the same.
She knew Haley dressed up and liked to do these things for fun, but when she got in character, she really got in character. It was a game to her; trying on different personalities, pretending to be someone else.
Kate thought she should get into acting, and be done with it already because it was starting to put a strain on their friendship.
Sometimes she just wanted to hang out with her best friend Haley, but whenever they did something together she never knew who was going to show up. It soon became a game of Guess Who?
It started the first time they went trick or treating together in eighth grade. Kate went as Red Riding Hood, Haley went as Amethyst a gloomy Goth/emo that only wore black and liked to scare small children.
Amethyst had since worked her way into Haley's regular stock rotation and a permanent fixture in her alter ego repertoire. She was a staple at every Christmas dinner, Easter and valentines. And just an overall menace to society.
Haley explained she liked to play different people from time to time. Halloween was the first time she pulled back the curtain and bared her soul, and Kate felt honoured since she had a feeling it was something she didn't usually show people.
Haley made a face that resembled disappointment. "Those 'crazy' alter egos are a part of me," she said with an edge to her tone.
"Okay, I'm sorry," Kate replied genuinely apologetic, she didn't mean to upset Haley. Initially she didn't have a problem with her side hobby, it was sort of fun, but now it had long since grown tedious and she was slowly losing patience.
Something that used to be a fun party trick had evolved and consumed every aspect of Haley's life. Kate couldn't see where Haley began and the others ended. Haley always said it was boring just being 'Haley' all the time but, to Kate, Haley was the only one she really wanted to see.
"I'll go," she caved like always. That was the dynamics of their friendship; Haley would push and Kate would cave. That was why they worked so well together.
