VI - First Signs
Raven's POV
"Beast Boy? Where are you?" Robin says coming in.
"The lights are busted." Cy says flicking the light switch.
"It is quiet. A bit too quiet." Star says.
"Hold on. I sense something. It's..." My eyes snap open. "Avia." It all makes sense.
"What? How is it Avia?" Cyborg asks.
"Remember when I said that I felt weird earlier? Must have been her. When she doesn't feel good I don't feel good. It makes sense."
"How so?" Robin asks.
I explain furthur. "She can control electrical currents. Stop and start them. i.e. shutting off the lights."
"Why would she do that?" Star asks.
"It's not on purpose. It's only when she's scared." There's a loud thud that sounds like it came from upstairs.
We run upstairs as fast as we possibly can. The door opens and Avia is laying in the middle of the ops room and Beast Boy thrown over the counter like a disregarded rag doll. There's more broken glass near Avia.
"Avia!" I run over to her avoiding the glass. I sit her head on my lap and pull off her hood. She's pale.
"Beast Boy!" Star picks Beast Boy up off the counter and sits him on the couch. She does the same with Avia.
"Pulse?" Robin checks it.
"It's there. Both of them are faint though."
I let out a relieved sigh.
He has scratches and a large scar across his cheek. Probably from the glass. It doesn't seem to be deep though.
I put my hands to Beast Boy's head and heal scratches and the cut he's sustained. He comes too as soon as I do.
"Beast Boy!"
"Waa! Who are you?!" What?
"B? It's us. Your friends. Cy, Star, Rob, and Raven." He blinks at Cyborg taking in his statement.
"Right. Sorry. I drew a blank there for a second." Phew.
"He doesn't have a concussion." I say.
"What happened B?" Cyborg asks.
"I don't remember. All I remember is Avia repeating the word 'dark' and the rest is a blur."
"That's probably because she's afraid of it." I reply.
"But she went into the basement by herself."
"It's complicated. She only gets scared at certain times." I look at her chest slowly rising and falling steadily. Other than that however, there is no movement. "But she never told me when those times were." I clench my fist. Robin places a hand on my shoulder.
"Here." I make a icepack and give it too Beast Boy.
"Thanks. Jeez I hit my head hard. I'm going to guess you guys didn't see what happened?" He asks.
"Nope. But I bet the cameras do." Cyborg points to the camera in the corner. "Good thing the cams are on backup power AND a backup backup power."
He pulls up the camera feed and clicks away on the mouse. Soon we get footage from 5 minutes ago, just before we heard the thump and the glass.
"No. It wasn't then. She started acting weird when we were in the lobby." Beast Boy stops us.
"You sure?"
"Pretty sure."
"How long ago was it?" Robin asks.
"Uh..If you guys just got here, and it just happened, about 10 minutes ago."
"8:58 it is then." I say. Cyborg rewinds the tape and Avia comes out of the basement door with Beast Boy supporting her. She looks so small.
"Avia?"
"The dark..." She says.
"What about it?" He looks confused.
"The dark..." She repeats.
"Avia?"
"Dark..." She just says it over and over again. What could have traumatized her enough to act like this?
Beast Boy tries to calm her down. "Should I call the Titans? I think they're on their way. Should we wait outside?"
"No! It's dark outside!" She shrieks.
"Ah! Ok! Ok. We'll stay in here. Let's go to the back."
"Dark...dark...dark...dark..." She whispers this so low I can barely hear it on the camera feed. Then the lights snap out.
"DARK!!" She and Beast Boy stop dead in their tracks. Good thing the cameras have night vision.
"Woah woah calm down! Relax! It's ok. Just follow my voice." She turns away from him and straightens herself up.
"Get away from me." The lights flicker.
"What?" Now the lights are like strobe lights. Her eyes glow a flourescent deep purple as she walks towards Beast Boy. We all watch as she slaps him to the side with her bare hand alone. He hits the wall as if someone like Star or Mammoth threw him there.
"Woah." Beast Boy says in awe.
"Raven do you know what is happening here?" I turn to Star and shake my head.
She walks over to Beast Boy as he cowers in fear against the wall.
"Avia! What are you doing?!"
"Silence peon." The way she says this takes me aback. She sounds so authoritative. That's not her.
"Woah woah woah, I don't want any–" She picks him up off the floor and throws him against another wall.
"No mercy." Cyborg mumbles.
"Quiet. If I were you I would be terrified. You have no idea what I can do to you. I've done it before and I can do it again."
"What...are you going to do?"
"Do you really want to know?"
"No..." She makes a portal and throws him through it.
"Time to have some fun." She grins an evil smile.
"Where did they go?" Starfire asks.
"I'm looking I'm looking!" He flipped over camers and found them in the evidence room.
"The evidence room?"
"That must be where the glass originated from." Star says.
"Ow!" She threw him into a full row of displays and face planted into the last one. He came out with the gash on his face.
"Agh! Stupid glass!" Avia got hit with some and it got caught in her cloak. She was distracted so Beast Boy seemed to take the opportunity to hide.
"Beast Boy, how do not remember this?" Cyborg asks.
"Dude, I have no clue. You'd think I'd remember slamming into a display case."
"Where did you go Beast Child? I have a surprise for you!" She starts spewing purple gas out from under her cloak and Beast Boy darts out of the room. "You good for nothing runt! Get back here!"
"Cy!"
"I got it I got it!" Now we have the ops room feed. Beast Boy runs in and falls as Avia floats in menacingly. What am I watching? Really? I know I'm not myself when I get angry but this is insane. When I...turn...I do things I wanted to do but could because I didn't want to turn. But Avia's different. It doesn't look like she wanted to do this. She was so afraid. Or at least looked like it.
Beast Boy starts looking around frantically. But Avia picks him up by his shirt.
"Woah woah Avia! Wait! What's going on? What's with you?"
"What's going on? You don't know what I do do you? Of course you don't. Most people don't live to see me a second time. Granted, I've only showed up twice..." She stops and narrows her eyes. "But what I do? I do it because I want to. Larae isn't in control here."
"Larae? Who is Larae?" Star asks. I keep quiet. Not my place to say. I watch the screen intently. Beast Boy looks petrified.
"Because if she was, I wouldn't do this!" She camera goes staticy and I can't tell what's happening. When it's over, Beast Boy is over the counter like we found him and Avia is still standing. "My job is done." She brushes the shards of glass onto the floor. Exactly where we found them. Then her eyes go back to normal, the lights turn back on, go off again, and she passes out.
"I guess that's it..." Robin says.
"Dang man. You took a beating." Cyborg says to Beast Boy. He says nothing. I sit next to Avia, who is still passed out.
"I am a bit glad that we did not see what she did to him." Star says.
"Me too..." I mumble.
"Raven do you know what happened?" Robin asks again. I shake my head and don't look at him. I can't believe I just saw what I saw. She sounded like she would kill him, but she didn't. I would like to know what she did to him. What she actually did.
"...No. I haven't. I've never seen her like that and I've never seen her do anything like that. She's not...I don't..." I just can't seem to wrap my head around this. Robin puts a hand on my shoulder.
"Sorry Beast Boy... She wasn't..."
"Ugh...who wasn't what?" Avia is awake.
"Avia, are you alright?"
"More or less... What happened to Beast Boy?" Everybody looks away.
"Do you remember what happened?" Robin asked firmly.
"I...no..." She looks at me. She can see the concern in my face. She let's out a long, deflated sigh and doesn't look at anybody. Just her knees. "You saw the cameras didn't you?"
"Yes."
She looks at Beast Boy and his ice pack.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean for that to happen. But it did, all because I remembered something that I shouldn't have done a long time ago."
"What was it Avia?" She gets up from the couch and stands near the window.
"I killed somebody." She what?! "I remember it perfectly. I was five, Raven was seven, late spring, we were all at the park.
But I got separated from mother and Raven and wandered into the woods. It was dusk so it was starting to get dark, and I saw this man.
Bald, middle aged, thick brown beard, he had a weapon in his hand. It was an enchanted knife. Sharp enough to cut through anything. I caught him standing over a dead puppy. I don't know how it happened, all I know is that he was covered in blood and he had the knife over a corpse.
When I was little, I was very attached to animals, so seeing that was bad enough. He pointed the knife to my face and threatened me. "If you tell a soul what you saw I will hunt you down and make sure you don't tell anyone else."
That's exactly what he said. I was scared, afraid, and angry all at once. Then it happened. I remember all of it. I took his memories and left him brain dead. He couldn't even say what one plus one is, because he didn't have the capability to speak. Didn't have the capability to breathe or pump blood, so he died. Eyes rolled back into his head and died right in front of the 5-year-old that killed him.
I ran. Bolted as soon as he hit the floor. I didn't know where I was going but I sure wasn't going back. I had in a dark cave...for three days until Raven found me cold and hungry.
The dark only scares me when I think of this. I was traumatized. I have a panic attack so I try not to think about it much."
"Oh my god." I get up and stand in a corner. I can't look at her. I need a minute.
"I stole your memories of what I did Beast Boy." She turns back around. "She wanted to kill you, but with the little control I had, I stopped her from doing it. I couldn't live with myself if you had died like he did."
"Do you still remember his memories?"
"The man's memories Cyborg? Yes. He had three children and a pretty wife. He was a monk, and I realized that he killed the dog in self defense. The mother and the puppy had bitten him and he had to fight back. I killed a guy who was defending himself."
"But he threatened you." Star says.
"It doesn't matter! I still killed him! Have you killed anybody before? Have you watched them collapse at your feet when you could barely say the word 'exhausted'?! Nobody should go through that!" She sits on the ground. "Nobody should have to go through that... And THIS DOESN'T MAKE MY LIFE ANY EASIER!" She pulls up her sleeve and reveals the mark from before. THIS STUPID THING MADE IT WORSE!! SHE DIDN'T SPEW GAS BEFORE! THIS THING MADE ME STRONGER!" She needs something. A hug perhaps. I give her one. She relaxed and she takes a deep breath.
"Go ahead guys. Ask her." I say.
"Ask me what?"
"Um...Friend Avia?" Star starts.
"Who is Larae?" Beast Boy finishes.
Avia takes another long sigh.
"Me. I'm Larae."
She killed someone... She killed someone, and I didn't know about it nine years... I walk out room and shut my door.
"Wait Raven!"
