I am Death - Part 9
When I arrived, I noticed a big split in the barrier separating the Human and Death Realms. "A break..." I mumbled to myself, as I flew through.
The scene in front of me was horrifying.
The Deaths with wings were flying in the air, shooting at everyone, and those without wings were running around on the ground. I assumed those with wings to be the Felons, and those without wings as the Deaths.
Miraculously, Sandra just happened to run past me through the chaos. "Sandra!" I swooped down in front of her. "What's going on?"
Sandra stopped to make a face at me. "Isabelle?" she asked. "Is that you?"
I was confused, until I realized that I had wings, and I remembered Julian - ugh - saying I would have "heavy makeup" on my face. "Um, yeah," I said hurriedly. "So, what's going on?" I repeated.
She opened her mouth to answer, but an arrow passed over our heads. "Um, I'll tell you while we move." We started running - I stopped flying so we'd be at the same pace - as she spoke.
"So, maybe 30 minutes ago, I was at home, when I heard this explosion. I used the DeathPortals to come here, where I found those flying creatures-"
"Felons," I interrupted. She gave me a look, and I grimaced. "Sorry, I'll let you continue."
"So," she continued, as I ducked past an arrow, "at first, they were all like, 'Oh, where is Dennis Delton?' and everyone's like 'Oh, we don't know.' Because, you know, we didn't.
"But I guess they thought we were lying, because one of them got out their Death Weapons, and aimed it at someone - I don't know who she was.
"And then Delton comes up, and he's like 'Okay, guys, let's just chill here, okay?' But the Felons are like, 'No way, you surrender calmly and no one gets hurt.' - Look out!" She pushed me to the ground as I watched a bullet fly into the boxes in front of us, causing it to explode.
"Damn," I breathed, before Sandra pulled me up.
"Yeah, so Delton is like, 'Oh, where's Daniel?' and their leader is like, 'Oh, he's dealing with the Death that got us in,' and...Isabelle?" she stopped when she noticed I was still behind her. "Why'd you stop? Do you want to get hit?"
"His name isn't Julian, it's Daniel," I said, more to myself than to her. "I caused this." I looked up sharply at Sandra. "What happens when someone gets hit with an arrow?" I demanded.
She looked surprised at my sudden tone. "Well, when the Felon shot it at Delton, he turned into dust, but-"
"Perfect." I reached back to pull out an arrow, smiling bitterly when I realized that none of them had fallen out. I set the arrow in place, and shot it at the nearest Felon. I smirked as I watched him fall to the ground, already disintegrating before he hit the floor.
I turned back to Sandra, no longer caring about what had happened. "We need to get you - Oh my god!" I quickly jumped in front of her, raising my wing to stop the arrow from hitting her head. I winced, bracing myself for the worst, when I realized the arrow just fell to the ground. "Huh." I reached down to pick up the arrow. Without thinking, I immediately sent the arrow flying back at the assailant, and I watched triumphantly as I watched the arrow sink into his arm.
I focused my attention on Sandra again. "Okay. We need to get you a Death Weapon. And some wings," I added, when I remembered how they'd saved my life. "Do you know how to get them?"
"Um, I think they're in the Weapon Room," she said as we started running again. "It's this way," she said, pointing to the right. "But I don't know how to get my wings. How did you get your wings?"
"Uh, I just imagined myself with them, and it happened," I said lamely. "Think you can do that?"
She shrugged. "I suppose I could." She looked around, then closed her eyes. "If anyone comes, cover me?"
I nodded, then remembered that her eyes were closed. "Sure," I said, reaching for another arrow. I spread my wings out to block her, when she suddenly screamed.
"Holy schist!" When I turned around, I saw her on the ground. How did something hit her? I was covering her really well, and no one was around.
I shook her arm. "Sandra! What's happening? Did you get hit?" Then I noticed a bulge in her back. Oh. I laughed. "Oh, yeah, it hurt for me, too. They should come out any second n - Oh, damn!" When her wings popped out, one side pushed me to the other side of the hallway.
When Sandra looked up, I noticed she had a red rose painted (or tattooed?) over her right cheek, with a green stem tracing down, jagged, like a scar. Her wings were bright red, and they seemed to be on fire every time they flapped. "How do I look?" she asked tentatively, as she tested out her wings.
I grinned. "You look terrific. Just don't touch your right eye so much." I ignored her confused look as I hovered next to her. "You can fly now, right? Let's not walk, I think it'll take too long."
Sandra and I flew towards the Weapon Room, where the door was already opened. We walked in cautiously, with my bow ready to shoot, when I realized it was filled with Deaths. "What are you guys doing here?" I asked, loosening my grip.
One of the girls stared at me, her gun pointed at my face. "You shoot, I shoot. You're outnumbered 27 to 2, so I recommend you don't."
What? I thought we were on the same side. "Aren't you guys Deaths?" I asked, stepping closer. I flinched, when another girl stepped up with her own gun.
"So what if we are?" she asked. I thought I heard a British accent.
"Nothing! I'm a Death, too!" Why did they doubt me? "Is it because of my wings?" I laughed, and I saw a bow and arrow aimed at my throat. I rolled my eyes, showing them my left wrist. "You see this? It's a DeathWatch."
One if the Deaths holding the gun put it down, but the first girl didn't waver. "You could have stolen it from one of us," she said.
I sighed loudly. "Okay, listen. I'm not-"
Sandra stepped forward, giving me a look. "She's right, we're not Felons. We're Deaths like you. We came so I could get a gun. I'm an SD," she jerked her head at me, "and she's an ID. So just let me get a gun, and we'll leave."
The girl still stared at us suspiciously. "Where'd you get your wings from, then?" she asked.
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. After all, I was just as clueless as her when I first found out. "Just imagine yourself with wings, and you'll get wings," I said in a clipped tone. "Now let Sandra get a gun, give me extra arrows, and we'll leave."
The girl continued staring at me, but she finally lowered her gun.
"Finally!" I stepped past them, ignoring the gun inches from my cheek. I placed my bow down, and took my sack of arrows off, checking to see how much was in there. I'd started with 24, and now I had 23. I reached for 7 arrows, still ignoring the gun now pressed against my temple.
"Sandra, did you get your gun?" I called, turning my head.
She lifted up two, grinning. "Yep. Now let's get out of here." We both turned to go, but as soon as I was out the doorway, I stepped back in.
"And just so you know, I wasn't kidding about the wings. Just imagine yourself with wings, and you'll get them. And you should, because they let you fly, and bullets and arrows don't affect them." I stared at the girl still pointing the gun at me, before I left for real.
I was ready to go out there and kill my mistake.
