I am Death - Part 12
Sandra laughed at my reaction. "Of course I'm alive! Deaths can't just . . . die." Then she paused. "Can they?" she turned to a man standing next to her.
When I released Sandra from my grasp, I noticed it was Delton. No wonder I'd thought of grass - he was smoking weed the last time I saw him.
He frowned, a wrinkle forming between his brows. "I don't know," he said slowly. "I mean, I've never approached the idea, so..." he trailed off, leading to an awkward silence.
I cleared my throat, needing to break the tension. "So, uh, what is this place?" I asked.
Sandra sighed. "We're...actually not sure what to call it yet," she said, glancing at Delton.
He looked surprised at the stares he was recieving. "Why are you guys looking at me?" he asked.
"Because you're, like, the founder of Deaths," I said, giving him a look.
He made a face. "Wouldn't you rather like to know how this happened?" he asked, staring at me.
I bit my lip, a bit abashed. "I already know what happened," I said, trying to keep my composure. "A break formed, the Felons came, and started attacking us."
Delton rolled his eyes. "Yes, but it's not that simple," he stated. "First of all, the Felons are still there, and more Deaths are appearing here, as we speak." He gestured around us, and I noticed that about 5 more appeared, and counting.
"Oh." I said simply. Then, "How much time has passed since I came here?"
Sandra glanced at her DeathWatch. "About 5 minutes," she said, "so we might still have a chance to win."
"But we're stuck here," I said, confused. "Can't we just hope the remaining Deaths win, while we move on with our lives?"
The two of them just stared at me for a while. Finally, Delton spoke up. "No. There's still a way to go back," he said.
"What?" I jumped off my bed. "So why are you guys still here? Why don't you go back?"
"Well, we can't just go back," Delton said. "We need the Death who caused this mess."
I winced. "Oh, really? Why?"
"Because we need that Death to reflect on his or her mistake, then fly us out of here," Delton said calmly, like he was talking about the weather.
"What?" I started to freak out. Wait a second. "Why do I keep feeling human emotions when I'm not supposed to?" I asked.
Sandra sighed. "We all are. Delton suspects we're somewhere in the Mortal Realm."
I breathed a sigh of relief. So it wasn't just me, then. "So, what am I supposed to do?" I asked Delton, feeling my confidence returning.
"It's really simple," he said cheerfully. "You just have to think about what you did, how you caused it, promise you'll never do it again, go into your Natural Death Form, break a hole in the roof, then get us all out of here."
I frowned. It sounded too simple. "What's the catch?" I asked.
He hesitated. "One will have to stay," he said quietly.
I blinked. "Oh." There was silence for a while, until Delton finally spoke.
"So, are you ready to think?"
I nodded, closing my eyes to concentrate, when I realized something. "Um, what exactly happened, and how did I cause this?" I asked, opening my eyes.
Delton grimaced. "Well, first of all, the DeathPortals shut down immediately after Daniel came into the picture, and the last thing I remember seeing, is an arrow aimed for my face. This is what you caused.
"And for how you caused this, well, when we rebuilt the Realm, we made it so that it wouldn't break unless a Death refused to do their job."
"But Daniel wasn't a real mortal," I interrupted. "He only pretended to be human, and hacked into the system."
"It doesn't matter if he was a mortal or a Death or an animal," Delton said. "You have to do your job." He sighed. "But I guess he knew, and found some way to trick you into not killing him. Either that, or our Death Stuff thought of him as a mortal." Suddenly, I remembered him being forced away from the DeathPortal from school.
I clenched my teeth tightly. Daniel, you bastard, I thought, I will return to the Death Realm to send you back.
I closed my eyes and started to reflect. I thought about the chaos I had caused for the Death Realm. I thought about how Daniel had been Julian, sent to Earth to put a love spell over me. I also thought about him shooting Sandra, when I felt something warm go down my back.
I opened my eyes, surprised, and gasped with Sandra and Delton.
It turned out my wings had grown back, bigger, darker, and deadlier than before. I grinned, and my smile widened, as Sandra held out a mirror to my face.
I didn't know what my face had looked like before, but I now had black jagged lines running past my face and neck, like scars, and a silhouette of a girl holding a bow and arrow, ready to shoot, printed on my right cheek.
I smiled wider, noticing the sack of arrows that reappeared on my back, and the bow gripped tightly in my left hand. I glanced at Delton, and he nodded at me.
I stood up on my bed, noticing all eyes on me, waiting. "Who is ready to go back, and fight for our Realm?" I screamed at everyone, hoping an awkward silence would not follow.
"We are!" They all shouted back. (Thank goodness.)
"Who is ready to go back, and return the favor the Felons had put on us?"
"We are!"
"Then go into your Natural Death Form, and get ready to fly out of this hell, and into our hell!"
"Yeah!"
I breathed heavily, as I watched everyone start to grow wings, grip their Death Weapons, and have marks grow on their faces. I looked down at Delton, but I noticed he wasn't doing anything.
"You're not coming?" I asked in a quieter tone.
He shook his head, smiling. "I need to stay here for the newcomers," he said. I looked around, and I noticed some Deaths either lying down on the beds, or waking up, confused.
I nodded at him. "Will you come back after we win?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Maybe." He smiled at me. "But if I don't, I think you'll make a good leader."
I laughed. "So I won't have to go to school anymore?" I asked.
He paused. "Well, I suppose it's safer if you don't go right now, you know," he said.
I grinned at him for the last time, and focused my attention back on the others. "Everyone, get ready to fly!" I jumped off the bed, flying straight up, towards the white ceiling. Right before I hit it, my wings flew up, breaking the ceiling for me. I looked down, pleased at all the Deaths flying out through the bat-shaped hole.
"Ready to go?" Sandra asked, as she popped out. I noticed her wings were brighter, and her face had more designs on them.
I nodded at her, flying back to the Death Realm with the others. "Let's go kick some Felon-butts."
